  About the Author

Velvet Nelson received her BS in business administration from West Liberty University, her MA in geography with a concentration in rural development from East Carolina University, and her PhD in geography from Kent State University. She joined the Department of Geography and Geology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, in 2006 and was promoted to associate professor in 2012. She is a human geographer with interests in cultural geography and human-environment interactions, but her primary research focus has been on tourism. She has conducted archival research on historical patterns of tourism in the Caribbean, as well as fieldwork on islands such as Dominica, Grenada, and St. Vincent to examine current issues. In 2010, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Slovenia. She has published her research in peer-reviewed journal articles and presented it at regional, national, and international conferences both within geography and in the interdisciplinary field of tourism studies. In addition, she strongly believes in direct experience through travel as a means of learning about new places. As such, she travels at every opportunity.
