Graeme had to think about it for a moment. In all the chaos, he’d been so concerned with Ree’s safety that their standing in the clan hadn’t concerned him. “Aye,” he said finally. “Thanks to a few well-placed threats and a bit of blackmail, we’re still clan Maxwell.”
“I knew it!” the bairn crowed. “Mrs. Giswell kept saying we were all done fer, but I didnae believe it.”
Looking over his brother’s head at Marjorie, Graeme didn’t quite believe any of it, either. “The lot of ye stay here. I require a private word with Marjorie.”
Without waiting for a response he took her hand and pulled her into the morning room, leaning back against the door to shut it. As she faced him, he drew her forward so he could slide his arms around her waist and breathe in the lemon scent of her hair. She rested her cheek against his chest, and he wondered if she could feel his heart beating.
“Ye’re my lass,” he whispered.
“I am,” she returned in the same, intimate tone. “And you’re my Highlander.”
“I am,” he echoed. “And please dunnae ever scare me like that again. I’ve just found ye. I’ll nae tolerate losing ye. Anything else, aye. But nae that.”
She knew as well as he did that while Dunncraigh might subside for a time, the trouble he represented likely wasn’t going away. But she nodded anyway, lifting her face to gaze at him with those eyes the color of a loch in deep summer. “I’ve met a great many people in my life, Graeme, and you are the truest and bravest man I’ve ever known. I know how to use words, and today it happened to benefit both of us. I only stepped forward, though, because you would have given your own blood to protect me. So I’ll do my best not to scare you, if you tell me every day that you love me.”
“That’s an easy task, mo boireann leòmhann,” he murmured, kissing her again. “I love ye.”
“And I love you.”
A young fist knocked on the door. “Graeme, did ye tell Brendan we could get a dog? Because I would like a dog. A hound, I think.”
Marjorie started laughing, burying her face against his coat. She’d gone from a simple, hopeless life to a wealthy, restricted one, to this … warmth and noise and chaos. And to a man who made her feel strong, and hopeful, and loved. “Yes,” she called, chuckling. “We should get a very large hound.”

About the Author
A native and current resident of Southern California, Suzanne Enoch loves movies almost as much as she loves books, with a special place in her heart for anything Star Wars.
