  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My aunts, Gladys Winston and Sue Anderson, both passed away while I was writing this book. It is an unbelievable loss for our family. And so, in loving memory of two great old gals, I’d like to dedicate this book to them. Their spirit for life, their laughter, and gifts for storytelling and good times played key roles in the creation of certain characters. May God bless.

Also, I would like dedicate this book to my late agent, George Nicholson. He was the driving force behind this project. Normally stoic and oh-so-cosmopolitan, it was rare to see him awed. But when I introduced the idea over lunch in a Manhattan bistro one sunny summer day, he became downright effusive. “You must write this, my dear!” he declared. He died before the project was completed, but it was his voice I heard quietly pushing me along the way. I miss you, George. I miss you and my aunties. God bless.

Thirdly, this novel is dedicated to the buoyant spirit of Mariah Carey’s music, especially her early hits, which played a huge role in my life. Warbling along with her fiercely emotional or effervescently upbeat tunes helped me conquer demons and slay dragons, feel love and sharpen creativity. You’ve inspired me, Miss Mariah. Your musical gifts helped shape this story and give it life. Thank you!

It takes a lot of good hearts and strong minds to put together a book. Super-duper thanks to the lady who makes me—and my books—look good, designer Marcie Lawrence. Special acknowledgment to my editor, Allison Moore, who knows how to inspire the best in me, all the while making me believe it was my idea. And thank you, Esther Cajahuaringa, for being a kick-butt intern at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and a great supporter of my work.

And lastly, a thank-you to the community that raised me in the spirit of gospel music. You helped bring Cadence and her world to life.
