Fatal Reunion: A Very Unorthodox Murder Mystery Page 6

by Michael Sivyer

Mike's emotions forced a smile to break out upon the flesh of his face. He reached into his pocket and wrapped his hand around the cold, steely graze of his badge. It was a rarity that he would carry the thing around, but since he was under close supervision from his superiors, he had been carrying it around lately as a precaution.

Withdrawing it from his worn jean pockets, he placed it in the palm of the boy.

“Here, you look after this for a while.” He nodded, “If you do a good job of guarding it, I'm sure we can persuade the captain to get you your own!”

Meanwhile, Andy was trying to extract information from a man who was – rather quickly – becoming the victim of his deception skills.

“I know you're up to something else, here.” Spoke Andy fiercely, “So once again – I'm offering you the chance to cough it up and retain whatever little dignity you have left from this whole thing. You've been feeding a five-year-old raw steaks, keeping him locked up in a dog pen. Come on, now. Nothing can be worse than that – so in my eyes, it's all up hill from here. So, let’s just get it done with, shall we? At least then we can chuck you where you deserve to be.”

The detective inspected the criminal's eyes – he could tell within an instant that the man was not in any kind of informative mood, so set his mind about other ways to source his information.

“Besides... I'll let you in on a secret. The whole thing was a sting – but of course, you already knew that, right? That's why you killed Spidey.” Andy made his way over to the weaponry and selected a bamboo cane from the rack, approaching his victim once more. “So, all I need to know is who else was involved. I'll do you a little deal here – And I can be quite a nasty man when I need to be – Tell me what I want to know, and you can all be locked up in our little luxury British prisons. If you don't? Well... I can get your little crew extradited back to the states. Don't they still put the worst of you lot on the chair?”

Andy let his statement stick for a few seconds before resuming; “Only... I wouldn't let you have that honour of quick, painless death. You'd sit in the filthiest of the prisons. I'd only give that luxury to your crew – and some of those guys are your family, right? So, I'd think very carefully about what you say to me next. Can you really stomach all those years behind bars knowing that you were to blame for all of that?”

Andy ground his teeth furiously as he waited for the answer that he knew would eventually come. He could hear sirens drawing closer, however, and he knew that he had to get an answer before the man could think about other alternatives, stewing on his thoughts inside the lock-up. “Tick. Tock.” He muttered menacingly, imitating a syringe with his fingers, “Give them up, or I'll hunt them down myself.”

The man eventually nodded fearfully, noting that several of the men would be here soon and that the other members of the crew were due to fly into the country the following morning. Shortly thereafter, he was shuttled into the back of a waiting squad car, leaving Andy and Mike at the scene with arrest warrants for the other men, whilst the young boy was taken to safety. It proved to be a successfully afternoon as steel collars were locked around the wrist of no less than six guilty individuals, with plans in place to collar the other two men the second their wheels touched ground at Heathrow airport.

With each man satisfied with developments, they made their way back to base on what had proven to be yet another successful case to add to their C. V’s. Staying late to finish the paperwork, Andy and Mike were greeted with the grinning face of a familiar individual – Kris – whom had approached them to thank them for his rescue.

“You did some great work out there today, boys.” Grinned the captain, “Thanks to you – this brave young man was rescued. We found him a short-term foster family for the time being. It's a great place – a little farm just outside the city. Just the retreat that he needs, I should think.”

Andy nodded proudly. “That's great! You keep being strong, little man!” The detective pinched the cheek of the child as the kid wrapped his arms thankfully around his saviour, and Mike and Andy reflected upon the proudest moment of their career yet as the boy walked down between a row of desks to greet a kind-hearted family that would be taking him in for the time being.
