Sniper Page 23

by Lagomarsino, Giulia

  “Does it matter?”

  “Yes.”

He smiled and stood, holding out his hand to me. I took it hesitantly, wondering what he had planned for me now. He led me to the rear of the plane and opened the door to a bedroom. I swallowed down my revulsion, knowing what he wanted, and stepped inside. To my surprise, he didn’t follow.

“Get some sleep. We have a long flight ahead of us.”

I laid down on the bed and stared at the ceiling, wondering how I was going to live with myself after everything that had happened. All those men in Reed Security were in danger or possibly hurt and it was my fault. I chose to go with this monster, and even though I hadn’t given him everything he needed, he still managed to get in. I tossed and turned, trying to get some sleep, but all I could think about was that I had traded one life for another. Yes, my daughter was everything to me, but all those men had families too, and I had just sacrificed every single one of them.

Hours later, when we landed, I was ushered to another car and was taken to my new home. I shuddered when the tall gates opened to the long driveway that wound through thick trees. I couldn’t see the house yet, but if the gates were any indication, Wes had spared no expense on security. I would be lucky if I could even find my way off the property, for how long it took us to get down the driveway.

When we finally broke through into a clearing, I bit my lip to keep from crying. The house was beautiful, but all I could see was a luxurious jail. I would rather take my shitty apartment any day over staying here with Wes. He helped me out of the car and showed me around downstairs. I didn’t really see anything. I couldn’t have made my way to the kitchen, let alone described the color of the furniture in the living room.

When we got upstairs, he opened the double doors to what I assumed was the master suite. I walked in numbly and looked around. The room was huge and the bed was the focal point of the room. I could see a door that opened to the bathroom and two walk-in closets on either side of the room. Probably his and hers closets.

“This will be your new home. While you stay with me, I expect you to sleep in my bed. You will not leave the grounds and you will not make any phone calls or use the internet. I’ll have men with you at all times, except when you are in here with me. However, because you lied to me, you get to stay somewhere else until I feel you’ve served your punishment.”

“Lied?” I asked. My body trembled when he looked at me with so much anger that I wondered if I would even be alive tomorrow.

“Did you think I wouldn’t know that you left out some very important details about how to get into Reed Security?” He smirked and trailed a finger down my cheek and then gripped my chin harshly. “I already knew how to get in, my dear. It was a test and you failed. Now you’re going to pay for that.”

He grabbed me by the arm and roughly dragged me back down the stairs. I was tripping and falling against the wall as I tried to keep up with him, but he didn’t slow down. He pulled me through the rest of the house until we came to another door, this one old with multiple locks. My heart pounded in my chest as he swung the door open and led me down the cold steps, into the darkness.

There was a small window up high that barely let in any light, but that wasn’t what sent chills down my spine. There was a small cell in the corner of the room. There was no bed, only a small bucket in the corner. Wes opened the door and flung me inside. I fell to the ground, smelling urine that must have been covered up by dirt. I wasn’t his first prisoner.

The metal door slammed behind me and I quickly rolled over to my butt, watching as Wes locked me inside with an evil grin.

“When will my daughter be here?” I asked shakily. I could handle this, as long as I knew my daughter would be safe.

“Payton. Yes, she’ll be here soon. You just have to be patient.”

  “And until then?”

A slow, evil grin curled his lips as he shoved the key in his pocket. “You’re mine now. No one is coming to save you.”

He turned and stomped up the stairs, slamming the door behind him. I heard the locks sliding into place and then it was quiet. I looked around the dark room and scooted into the corner of the cell, pulling my knees to my chest. This was my home now. All I had was the darkness and my thoughts.
