A Life Well Played Page 17

by Arnold Palmer

I suppose, in the final accounting of it all, what I really am, inescapably—and how I prefer to be thought of in terms of my legacy—is a caretaker of the game, just the way my father was before me. Someone who tried to preserve it, nurture it, and improve it if he could, and who tried, also, to be a caretaker of the dignity of the game.

I hope you think I did a good job. I hope Pap thinks so, too.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Though I have written a number of books in the past, this one was particularly important to me, because, as I delved into the process, I realized just how much I still wanted to say to my friends in golf and to fans of the game in general. Going through the exercise of getting it all down has been personally satisfying, but I couldn’t have done it without a dedicated group of individuals who truly believed in this project.

I’ll start with my team in Latrobe and Orlando, particularly Doc Giffin and Cori Britt, who always have been incredibly reliable and have my back. The same goes for Alastair Johnston, my longtime business advisor, who has great vision for many things, and the same was certainly true for this book.

My wife, Kit, was very supportive throughout and really understood what I was trying to accomplish. And, of course, thanks to the rest of my wonderful family, all who have contributed to my successes through the years.

A special thanks to Dave Shedloski for rolling up his sleeves and bringing great care and energy to our collaborative effort. And to Marc Resnick, Steve Cohen, and everyone at Macmillan/St. Martin’s Press for guiding it along and getting us to the finish line.

And, finally, thanks to all the generations of Arnie’s Army for always marching along with me on a wonderful journey.
