“Perhaps not.” She smiled and touched his beard. “You look handsome.”
“Even with the beard.”
“I like it. It reminds me of when I first met you.”
“Quite a few things have changed since then.”
Isabel lifted her gaze around the room. “They have indeed. The house looks wonderful.”
Wilde offered her his arm. “We had better attend this ball or our guests shall be sorely disappointed.”
She nodded and took his arm. The usual swell of pride washed through him. This beautiful, clever, kind woman had actually agreed to marry him. Before long she would be his duchess. Not even the stares of over one hundred people could diminish the feeling of knowing she would soon be his.
The orchestra struck up shortly after they entered the ballroom. The chandeliers glimmered and candles cast a golden glow about the room. None of it shone quite like Isabel did, however, especially when he took her in his arms for a waltz.
“It has been some time,” he warned her.
“All will be well,” she assured him.
The crazy thing was, he believed her. With Isabel at this side, all was well, and it would continue to be.
“I love you, Isabel.”
“I love you, A—”
Despite the crowds of people watching, he cut her off with a firm kiss, unable to resist any longer.
“I love you more,” he murmured as applause broke out at his impromptu kiss.
“You beast,” she muttered with a grin.
