  Chapter 1

“Hello?” Rosa answered the phone reluctantly trying to keep the weariness from her voice. The restaurant had been filled to capacity tonight and one of the bus boys had just quit without a moment’s notice and her most efficient waiter had been sent home with the flu. It had been a horrendous night and her feet were killing her; she just wanted to soak them in some warm water and see if she could at least get a few house sleep; she certainly did not want to talk to anyone right now, even her best friend.

“Well good night to you too,” Hayley answered in an offensive tone.

“I am sorry honey but I am dead on my feet and desperately need some rest,” Rosa apologized with a slight smile, sitting on the side of the bed and eased the shoes off her feet.

“What you desperately need is a man in your life,” Hayley retorted in her usual forthright manner. “And I have just the perfect guy for you.”

“Hayley please,” Rosa said with a laugh, her weariness abating for a little bit. Her friend had been trying to set her up for ages and she had refused to be caught in the trap of blind date as she put it. “I am too busy to be going out on dates, especially with strangers who will probably turn out to be a pain in the neck or worse a pervert.”

“I promise as your best friend this one is a tried and proven eligible bachelor and on top of that he is a billionaire.” Hayley told her.

“Why does a billionaire agree to go out on a blind date?” Rosa asked suspiciously.

“Ok Ms. Suspicious, I knew you would ask that, the answer is that he is tired of woman going out with him for his money and he would like to be with someone who does not care if he had two pennies to rub together.” Her friend responded.

“I definitely care if he has two pennies to rub together,” Rosa said with a little bit of sarcasm in her voice.

“You know what I mean,” Hayley said impatiently. She was always saying Rosa was too picky and that was why at age twenty-eight she was still single. “It’s not good for you not to be having sex at your age, it creates all sorts of problem and you get too tense for people to be around you.”

“You sound just like my mother,” Rosa said dryly.

“A very smart woman, that one.” Hayley said with a smile in her voice. “So, what do you say?”

“If I say yes will you let me get some rest?” Rosa asked in a resigned tone.

  “Absolutely,” Hayley said airily.

“Yes,” Rosa sighed. “Bring on the blind date; but if I happen to make the six o’clock news about a woman abducted and raped and thrown into the river, then you’ll have to answer to my mother.”

“No problem, that woman loves me like a daughter so I’ll just replace you.” Hayley said before hanging up the phone, leaving Rosa laughing as she padded to the bathroom.

She and Hayley had been friends since they were in high school and the friendship had withstood the death of Hayley’s parents in a car crash ten years ago to the death of her own father two years ago and ups and downs in relationships that had gone awry especially with her. Now Hayley was engaged to be married to a wonderful man and believed that her best friend should have someone in her life.

Rosa sighed and got into the shower to wash off the smell of grease from her skin. She stared into the full length mirror critically. Her last disastrous relationship had been with James, a sous chef who had told her she was a cold fish and all because he had wanted to get her to move in with him in his tiny totally distasteful apartment so that they could split the rent. Good riddance, she had thought when he told her he did not think it would work between them. That had been a year ago and she had concentrated fiercely on her work because she was determined that somewhere in the very near future she was going to open her own restaurant.

She had lost weight, she noted objectively. Her breasts were ample and had gained her a lot of stares from the opposite sex. Her skin was a cool and beautiful cocoa color and she had colored her dark brown hair with streaks of gold and had refused to process it; so it was untouched by chemicals. She had it twisted in small spirals and it reached her shoulders. She was proud of her heritage and had no intention of trying to be someone she was not. Her large chocolate brown eyes stared back at her in the mirror; her full red lips that needed no artifice pursed in concentration. Maybe Hayley was right; she could not let her career goal take over her whole life; she certainly needed a distraction.

“I am sorry, I promise I will make it for tomorrow for sure,” Rosa said in a harried voice. She had forgotten about the date for the second time in a row and he had called her twice because she had told Hayley to give him her number. They had spoken over the phone; his name was John Yang, a Chinese by parenthood; that little detail her friend had forgotten to mention to her; not that it mattered to her much, but he sounded calm and not in the least bit put out by her standing him up twice and his voice was deep and friendly. “It’s crazy here and I totally forgot about our meeting.”

“It’s actually supposed to be a date,” his voice was amused and to Rosa’s surprise it actually had a calming effect on her.

“I am sorry,” she apologized again. “You see it’s been so long that I am mistaking dates for meetings now.” He laughed along with her.

“How about if I came there and have a drink when you are not so busy so we can get the first meeting out of the way?” he suggested.

“Here at my restaurant?” she asked stupidly, staring down at her plain white shirt and black work pants. It w
as a Friday night and the place was packed with couples out on date night.

“I promise to let you know right away if I don’t like what you’re wearing,” his voice was pleasant and tinged with amusement.

“Okay, why not,” Rosa said with a shrug.

“So it’s a date then,” he said. “What time works for you?”

“Nine thirty,” she told him and hung up the phone as another crisis in the kitchen begged her attention. The place had emptied out somewhat when he came and she realized it was him immediately. He was very tall to be of Asian descent, she thought objectively as she stared at the well dressed man looking around the restaurant and he was very attractive. A man who certainly did not need to go on blind dates. His almond shaped black eyes landing on her and he smiled as she waved at him to come over to where she was.

“Hi,” he said taking her hand inside his and holding on a little bit. “Hayley said I could not miss you and she was right. You’re very beautiful.” He said it in a matter of fact tone not like someone looking to flatter her to try to get into her pants.

“Thanks,” she smiled at him, her white smile lighting up her face and causing him to catch his breath. “You’re not too bad yourself.” She showed him to a table in the corner and told him she would be right back. She quickly went to the ladies room to see if she had any shine on her face, determined not to spruce herself up for him.

When she got back to the table he had already ordered two glasses of red wine. “I hope you don’t mind but Hayley told me you like red wine.”

“I do actually,” she accepted the glass he handed her and sat across from him. “How did you meet Hayley?” she asked him curiously. He was smartly dressed but then again Hayley had told her that he was a billionaire; his watch certainly looked very expensive.

“My parents own the supermarket where she does her shopping,” he told her with a smile.

“I see,” Rosa looked at him searchingly. “You don’t look like a stalker so why is she setting you up with someone you don’t know?”

He laughed out loud, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “I am definitely not a stalker and we were talking and I was telling her how disillusioned I was about dating and she mentioned the very lovely friend she had who was single.” He said teasingly.

“I am sure she did not say that,” Rosa retorted with a smile. She liked him. And even though she was called away to attend some minor catastrophe every two minutes she would hurry back and he was there waiting for her.

“I see you are kept very busy,” he commented after she had been called to attend to something for the third time. Her wine had gotten flat but she drank it down nonetheless.

“The perils of being a manager,” Rosa said with a small smile.

“Look, now that you have seen I am not a monster or a stalker how about a real date?” he asked her with a straight face.

Rosa tilted her head to one side as if she was considering and then with an impish smile she nodded. “I am off on Sunday so we could meet then.” She told him.

“Good,” he took one of her hand in his. “Hayley was right, you are truly beautiful.”

Rosa felt her heart jump a little at his touch and his words and she felt a brief moment of loss when he let go of her hand. “See you on Sunday Rosa,” he stood and waited until she was standing then with a small formal bow he left.

Rosa went back to the business of running the restaurant but this time her steps were lighter and there was a smile on her face.

“So tell me, how did it go?” Hayley’s impatient voice came over the phone just as she opened the door of her apartment that night. She was dead beat and she had to get up early in the morning to see to it that the order for the fresh vegetables arrived and that they were indeed fresh.

“You have very lousy timing,” Rosa told her friend, flopping on the bed and kicking off her shoes. She needed to wash off the restaurant smell from her but she did not have the strength to do so right now.

“So, tell me details so that you can get off the phone and get your beauty sleep,” Hayley said teasingly. “Not that you really need it.”

“It went well and I think I like him.” Rosa told her with a smile.

“I knew you would!” Hayley declared triumphantly. “You owe me a lunch and a dinner and if marriage eventually comes into the picture, a shopping spree.”

“Aren’t we jumping ahead of ourselves?” Rosa shook her head; Hayley had always been impulsive and said everything that was on her mind, no matter the consequences. “We are going on a proper date on Sunday.”

“And this time try to make it and Rosa,” she paused for dramatic effect. “Wear something nice.”

“I always do,” she protested, her mind flashing to her meager wardrobe.

“No you don’t and start looking before Sunday. Knowing you; you will probably pull out the first thing you put your hand on.” Hayley retorted before hanging up.

Rosa realized her friend was right and she really was not the going out type. She had buried herself in work. She was working especially hard because she wanted to open her own restaurant and sometimes she thought it was out of her reach but she was not one to give up. Because of that and her failure in relationship she had not bothered to splurge on clothes.

She went into the bathroom and took a quick shower before calling her mother. She had not called her back since yesterday and they usually talked every day.

“I was just thinking about you,” her mother’s calm voice came over the line and Rosa could not help but smile. Joan Hurley had been through the death of her husband at a fairly early age and lost her job as a junior high school teacher because of illness. She had bounced back and was getting better every day. She had started doing some organic planting at home that had taken off very well. She was Rosa’s hero and her tower of strength and even though they did not see each other often enough because of work they talked almost every day; catching each other up with what was happening in their lives.

“Good or bad?” Rosa teased. A quick glance at her bedside clock showed that it was almost eleven o’clock but her mother never went to bed early.

“Always good,” there was a smile in her voice. “How is work?” She had made Rosa’s dream hers and was trying to find ways and means to make sure she opened her restaurant.

“Tiring,” Rosa admitted. “I met someone,” she added cautiously.

“Is it a someone I will have to comfort you in the long run or a someone I can shout for joy and see a glimpse of a grandchild in the future?” her mother asked.

“You sound like Hayley,” Rosa said dryly. “Already planning my wedding.”

“Honey, we only want what’s best for you.” Her mother said. “Now, tell me about this someone.”

Rosa told her about John and the fact that although he was Asian; they had hit it off and they had a proper date on Sunday.

“That’s good baby, keep me posted. Now go and get some rest.” Her mother said firmly.

Rosa went to bed but could not sleep; her mind in a turmoil. She had done the dating thing but had failed at it and she was not sure about it anymore. John Yang was a billionaire and he was Chinese and she knew they married their own kind; so even if they hit it off together, there would be no future for them in the long run so she wondered if she should just quit while she was ahead and save herself a broken heart in the future; but she had never been one to give up on anything; she would just see where it leads, no harm in doing that.

The morning sun was just coming up when she opened the doors of the restaurant. It was almost September and it was getting to be so cold but not unbearably so and Rosa pulled her jacket closer to her. She was the first one there but she wanted to go to the office and sort out some paper work before the hustle and the bustle started. A chair in the corner needed repair and she made a mental note to send it out to get it fixed. She noticed the drapery that parted the far corner was looking a little dingy. The owners; a husband and w
ife team had given her carte blanche in the running of the place but that still did not satisfy her. She needed something to call her own because then she would be able to be as flamboyant as she wanted to be. Right now, even though she held the title of manager; her hands were tied when it came to certain decisions.

She pulled out the chair around the small crowded desk and sat down reaching for the ledger. Last night had been a very good night and she noted that the chicken in lemon juice had gone particularly well. She started writing her report and making little notation on another piece of paper; ideas that she wanted to implement when she had her own place.

She had fallen in love with cooking when she was a child and had watched her mother in the kitchen and watched fascinated at the different herbs and spices her mother used to make a simple meal delicious. She had decided there and then that she wanted to cook and she had watched her every day until at age seven, she had started cooking her own little dishes in her easy bake oven she had gotten from her mother for her birthday. At the age of fifteen, she had surprised her parents with a four course meal for their anniversary. They had been astounded.

She gave a sigh and rubbed the small of her back. A waitress had gone off on maternity leave and she was short but she was not sure she should be hiring anyone else right now.

  *****

John wandered around the supermarket restlessly. He did not exactly work and even though he had been given an excellent education by his parents; the best actually, he was not free to do his own thing; he was still tied to his parents and he hated it. He had not lied to Rosa when he had told her that he had been getting disillusioned with the dating game because as soon as a woman found out who he was they started seeing dollar signs. His parents expect him to be with his own kind but after dating several Asian women he got bored with their subservient manner and their habit of agreeing to everything he said. He plowed a hand through his hair as he looked at the shelves to make sure they were well stocked.

He liked her. He knew it was at first sight but he liked her. He had watched her hurrying to and from and he had felt the pull of attraction; something he had not felt in a very long time. He definitely wanted to be with her; to see her and see where it took them. Hayley had laughingly told him that she was not easy to pin down because she was like a butterfly flitting from one place to another but he had enjoyed watching her moving around, her fluid grace as she moved with authority. He had watched her and knew he wanted to get to know her more; he felt it in his bones.
