Child of Her Heart Page 16

Everett’s smile didn’t reach his brown eyes. There was something naggingly familiar about the man, but Meredith couldn’t put her finger on what it was.

They were joined by another handsome man with dark hair and eyes.

“Meredith, this is Peter Logan. Peter, my soon-to-be wife, Meredith, Nancy Allen and Everett Baker.”

Peter shook hands with each person to whom he’d been introduced.

“I’m assuming you’re one of ‘the’ Logans,” Meredith said in a friendly tone.

“Terrence and Leslie’s oldest,” he replied easily.

“Peter is now CEO of Logan Corporation,” Justin told her. “As of, what, about two years now?”

Peter nodded. “Struggling to fill some big shoes.”

Justin slapped him on the shoulder in one of those classically masculine gestures. “As if a Harvard business grad doesn’t have the feet to fill them.”

Everett leaned over and quietly said something to Nancy, who interrupted to make their goodbyes. “Congratulations once again on your engagement,” she told the happy couple. “We’re going to go freshen our drinks.” She and Everett moved away.

Chaney arrived sometime later, late as usual, and attired in a wild zebra-print dress, her hair a new shade of red that was shocking, even for Chaney.

She carried a small gift box and presented it to the newly engaged couple.

“Go ahead, open it,” she said to Justin.

He untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. A pair of matching gold watches lay on a bed of black velvet, one men’s, one women’s. “Understated and elegant, right?” Chaney asked, her gold hoop earrings swaying.

“Chaney, they’re incredible.” Meredith lifted the smaller one from the box.

“Probably not as nice as your last one,” she said to Justin, “but I knew yours was pretty much toast.”

He glanced from Chaney to Meredith. “This was really nice of you,” he said, leaning over to hug Chaney. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Accepting a glass of wine from a tray a passing waiter carried, she took a sip and glanced around. “Classy place. You’re marrying well, Mer.”

Meredith grinned. She was well aware of how fortunate she was to have found the man of her heart’s desire, and the fact that he was handsome and well-off was just the frosting on the proverbial cake. “I know.”

Chaney turned her full attention to Justin. “So you don’t have a brother?”

He shook his head. “No, I don’t.”

  “Is your father married?”

  Meredith groaned.

“To my mother,” Justin said with a smile.

“Yeah.” Not discouraged, Chaney went on. “Do you have any single friends? I prefer at least an eight, but a five would do.”

Justin’s perplexed expression had Meredith chuckling.

The band struck up a tune, and he took her hand. “If you’ll excuse us,” he said to Chaney, “we’re going to have our first dance.”

The crowd parted and a smattering of applause followed them.

As Justin took her in his arms and led her smoothly across the floor, Meredith’s heart swelled with a newly born sense of love and acceptance.

The most wonderful man in the world loved her.

She had a beautiful baby and a new family, not to mention friends and co-workers who supported her dreams.

What more could a girl want?
