by Matthew Lang
Lapen Grass—A rainforest grass. Its root can be used to brew a soporific. Unknown to the Aergonites, its name literally means sleeping grass in the haerunwoln tongue.
Light and Dark—East and west. With the world never turning and the light remaining a constant, the directions of light and dark are more convenient and immediate than east and west.
Lizard, Giant Riding—Six-legged lizards used for riding. There are at least three known domesticated subspecies.
Long March, The—The journey of the Aergonite people from Blackwater to the Caverns of Aergon, led by Prince Fernando Aergon’s widow.
Magister—An honorific given to a magic user or mage in service of the Aergonite court.
Marin—A freshwater crustacean somewhere between a shrimp and a crayfish, and sometimes compared to langoustine in flavor.
Mennos—High Priest of Selune in the court of King Henricus. Responsible for recording the prophecies of Ignatius Solmento and collecting them into the Book of Solmento.
Moonchild—An insult used to refer to a Child of Selune.
Moonsilver—A soft metal used in the creation of many magical enchantments. Typically used for decoration or in an alloy.
Moon Spider—A giant spider said to be sacred to Selune. Defeating one is the mark of a chosen hero of Selune.
Nickedemus—Aergonite Magister and court necromancer. Trained both Esmeralda and Xavier in the magical arts.
Rite of the Red Sun—A ceremonial ritual where pubescent children in the Caverns of Aergon are brought into the sunlight. Those that show signs of being Children of Selune are abandoned on the surface.
Selune—Moon goddess. Twin sister of Helene. No longer sighted in the sky after the Fall. The haerunwoln is sacred to those who follow her.
Silver Scarab—A swimming, schooling crustacean often eaten as food.
Slasherclaw—A feathered bipedal carnivore and pack hunter. Probably some sort of dinosaur.
Sleeps—A measure of time, as in “it will take several sleeps to reach the city.” With no day or night to mark time, people use sleeps instead.
Tandyr—Riding lizard. Ridden by Hunter Joeri.
Thera—One of the elders of the Children of Selune.
Waur—A term of respect among the Children of Selune. It translates most closely to Elder.
Wyrmbane—The sword of Prince Fernando Aergon. Forged from meteoric iron and moonsilver. According to legend, it was enchanted to cut through the armored scales and tough hide of a dragon.
Xavier—A magister of the Aergonite court. Trained necromancer.
Zoul—A crested cave lizard from the Caverns of Aergon. Gifted to Adam as a mount by Captain Darius.
MATTHEW LANG likes being on the run. Sometimes for health (when he talks himself into it), but more often to see another country or culture. Preferably in person, but more frequently in his mind’s eye through the written word or collaborative storytelling—as the cool kids are now calling Dungeons & Dragons and other role-playing games.
When not writing, he claims to be fighting for pocket equality in women’s clothing, whatever that means, and talks an awful lot about quokkas. He is still likely to sing and dance in public, and more than a decade on is still loving MasterChef Australia. Matthew likes his men hot and spunky, his focaccia more Italian than British, and his vampires to combust when exposed to sunlight. Other than that, he’s pretty normal. His nurses say that any rumors of him escaping his straightjacket are absolute nonsense and there is no way that he has been let loose amongst the population of Melbourne, Australia, no matter what your neighbor told you.
Matthew can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and less relevantly, on YouTube under the handle MattLangWrites. He can also be found at www.matthew-lang.com. He loves it when readers reach out to share their thoughts and is currently talking about people being able to have their own adventures in the world of Twitterlight. He said something else about “Dungeons & Dragons,” “www.dmsguild.com,” and possibly “Patreon,” but it was all a bit vague and we’re waiting for more detail before committing to anything. We’re still not sure how he’s planning on doing all that from his padded cell where he’s definitely still kept. No, we don’t need to look, thank you very much.
