“Stevie!” he said. “I was just about to go get you! There were Endermen in the house, even though the whole place is blocked off!”
I ran past him and out the door. The entire sky was darkening, and not with clouds. With night. And it was hours before it would normally get dark! A cold, terrifying wind arose, shaking the trees.
“Maison!” I called. Did the Endermen teleport back to where they’d come from? If they’d somehow used the portal here, they might still be nearby! But my cries only hit the wind, and remained unanswered.
The door of my house burst open behind me, and Alex, Destiny, Yancy, and Maison’s mom ran through it. Dad was right behind, sword up. He didn’t even ask Maison’s mom who she was.
“How long has the sky been like this?” Yancy asked in a panicked voice.
“It started minutes ago,” Dad said. “Then two Endermen appeared.”
“Maison!” I cried again. The wind was screaming even louder than I was. Since when did we get winds like this in the Overworld?
There was a strange object floating in the sky, almost like a bank of green clouds. But when I looked at it, I saw it was something else. Something so much worse. My whole body trembled.
It was an End portal. An End portal in the sky.
Suddenly the portal seemed to explode in white light. We all covered our eyes with our arms, protecting ourselves. And then I slowly let my arm drop, dreading what I would see.
“At last,” said a voice in the sky.
There she was, her enormous body hovering in the dark skies above me, her purple eyes aflame, her days of imprisonment behind her.
The Ender Dragon was free!
