Myeyetwitchedatthat,buttherewasacreakinthehallway,ashiftofair,and something in the flavor of Martha. I looked up and jumped to my feet. Even thoughIknewshehadwokenup,Iwasstillthefirstacrosstheroomwithmy armswrappedaroundChrysie.
FelixhitusnextandthenJessie,Cyrus,andElspeth.Itwasonehugehugof perfectionasChrysieshudderedinmyarms.
When we pulled back, I looked into her eyes and found…her. Those quiet momentsmusthavegivenherthetimesheneededtopullherselftothefrontof thefragilebeingwhohadbeenleftbehindbywhathadhappenedtoher.
“Areyoualright?”
Shepaused,considering,beforeshesaid,“Yes.”
“We’resafe,”Itoldher,notreallybelievingit.

Itwaslatewhenthedoorbellrang.Ihadfinallyfallenintoadeepsleepand mystumbledownthestairshadleftmewithabruiseortwo.Icouldn’timagine who would be coming to the house at 2:00 a.m, but I was prepared to kill.
Except,whenIopenedthedoor,IsawtheonepersonIhadbeenachingtosee formonths.Aheadshorter,brightredhair,brilliantgreeneyesandfreckles.She wasanarmfulofcurvesand—usually—liveliness.
“Bran?”Iasked,shockedatherpalerthannormalskin,thedarkcirclesunder hereyes,andthesmallcurltohershoulders.
“Rue—” Her eyes were heavy with thoughts and feelings I couldn’t quite read.
IpulledherinsideasIasked,“Areyoualright?”
