On exhibit is King Tut’s life-sized solid gold mummy mask.

CHICAGO, II.: King Tutankhamen might have died more than 3,300 years ago, but this ancient Egyptian pharaoh is proving he’s still the king—especially when it comes to selling rickets to museums. The Egyptian government has loaned more than 50 objects taken from King Tut’s tomb to a traveling exhibit. Currently at the Field Museum in Chicago, the exhibit is scheduled to visit four more museum around the United States over the next two years. The objects that are on loan include a solid gold mask, gold lamps, gem-encrusted furniture, and priceless jewelry.

Visitors are waiting in line eight hours and more just to buy tickets, and the museums expect the event to be a sell-out. Is it the whispers about the fearful “Mummy’s Curse,” the glitter of jewels and gold, or the wrapped body of the pharaoh himself that is drawing such huge crowds? “It’s probably a combination of all these things,” says Riccardo Cather, the director of the Detroit Museum of Ancient Art. “We expect that more than eight million people will view the exhibit before it goes back to Egypt.”

Stores are cashing in on Tut-mania with Tut clothing and jewelry, choreographers are creating Tut dance steps, and stylists are giving the truly fashionable Tut haircuts!
