A Broken Girl's Journey 4: Kylie's Song Page 3

by Niki Jilvontae

As soon as Kylie hit the ground, the boy and most of the others shooting dice began to curse at her and threatened to beat her ass. Kylie lie there on the ground with a terrified and confused look on her face as the boy she bumped into stood over her with his fists balled up. He had a hateful look on his face as he grilled Kylie with his twelve gold teeth, top and bottom.

“Stupid ass bitch not watching where she going. Bitch, you burned my shot. Hoe you owe me $20.” The boy yelled, pointing his finger in Kylie face as other boys agreed.

Kylie was terrified because she had no idea what would happen. Kylie had never lived the street life and rarely saw real violence in the affluent Atlanta suburb she grew up in. The only time she was ever exposed to the hood was on their summer vacations to Memphis, which is why she hated it so much.

Kylie hated how the boys were so rude and violent and how the girls were just as rough. That’s why for the first couple of years living with Aunt Tricey she barely left the front porch. That was before things got unbearable. Now Kylie was happy when Aunt Tricey wanted her to go out. It gave her a break from the chaos. Only now she found herself in more chaos outside of her prison walls. She was now face-to-face with chaos and didn’t know how to react.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I was going over a song in my head. Please, I don’t have any money.” Kylie pleaded as she tried to get up off the ground. The boy prevented her from getting up by walking closer to her with his fists balled up and ready to strike.

“Sorry? Sorry my ass, bitch. You gone give me something either $20 in cash or $20 worth of ass. You pick!” The boy said reaching down and grabbing Kylie’s breast as she struggled to get up.

Just then Kevin, a boy Kylie knew from school and who was a known leader of the Crip gang, stepped forward, pushing the boy off Kylie and helping her up off of the ground. Tears streamed down Kylie’s face and her heart raced as she tried to regain her composure to finish her walk.

“Maine leave ha the fuck alone. Yo weak ass was fina crap out anyway. Fuck you wanna jump bad with the female foe. Then you was gone rape ha? You a nasty ass nigga bruh, witcho broke ass. Here take this $20 faggot ass nigga and get the fuck off my block!” Kevin yelled throwing the $20 bill at the boy and grabbing Kylie’s arm.

“Ima go wherever you going lil’ mama to make sure you aight!” Kevin said leading Kylie away from the boys as she wiped her tears from her eyes.

“Kebo you saving these hoes!” They boy yelled after them and all the others started laughing.

Suddenly, Kevin let go of Kylie’s arm and took a 9mm glock out of his waist band.

“Just keep walking lil’ mama, Ima catch up witcha after I fuck this pussy up,” Kevin said, turning around and walking towards the boy with the gun in his hands.

Kylie’s legs trembled as she slowly walked up the block looking back each second to see what Kevin would do. As soon as Kevin got within arm’s reach of the boy, who was still standing there laughing, he hit him full force in the face with the gun handle. Blood splattered out of the boy’s nose and mouth as his teeth scattered across the sidewalk. Kylie gasped in disbelief as the boy fell to the ground holding his bloody face and Kevin kicked him mercilessly as he cursed.

“Pussy muthafucka out here wanting to beat bitches cause he losing at dice. Nigga, you a hoe. I don’t need to save bitches, but I put you in a grave ole’ pussy ass nigga!” Kevin yelled delivering one last kick to the boy’s face before walking off.

Kylie stood there, staring at the boy in horror and disbelief as he lie in a puddle of his own blood. Kylie felt fear grow inside of her as she watched the evil look on Kevin’s face as he walked back towards her. Although she was scared, Kylie also felt some kind of strong, weird attraction to the boy who saved her.

Kevin was handsome at 6’1” with his hazel eyes, caramel complexion, and athletic build, but Kylie knew his reputation. He was a street thug, gang member, and she heard he had lots of girlfriends that he had slanging and tricking for him. Kylie didn’t want to be involved with that type of guy, but she couldn’t ignore her attraction to him. She was kind of aroused by her fear. She liked that he didn’t mind standing up for her even though he barely knew her. Kevin caught up with Kylie at the end of the street and put his arm around her waist, pushing her forward.

“Sorry bout that lil’ mama. Niggas be ignorant nowadays. Anyways, what’s your name baby and where you headed?” Kevin asked staring at Kylie from head to toe.

She could feel his eyes linger on her chest, causing her to blush and cover her them with her arms.

“My name is Kylie and I’m going to Kroger for my aunt to get dinner,” Kylie replied.

Her heart raced in her chest as Kevin stared at her with those beautiful eyes.

“Damn lil’ mama, yo auntie making you walk all that way by yo self. Hell naw. I gotta go with ya,” Kevin said flashing Kylie his gold-plated, million dollar smile.

Kevin had just as many gold teeth as the boy who attacked Kylie, maybe more. However, his smile was still warm and inviting to Kylie. She was so vulnerable at that moment that she needed someone, and Kevin was that someone.

“Yea, she don’t care what happens to me. She just wants what she wants, when she wants it,” Kylie said in a low tone.

Kylie didn’t want to reveal too much, but it was something about Kevin. It was like he pulled information out of her. She knew with him she didn’t have to filter her emotions because it was obvious he came from a situation just as fucked up as hers. So, Kylie opened up to Kevin.

“That’s fucked up! She so damn selfish lil’ mama, but most parents fucked up and selfish. Did she do that shit to your face too?” Kevin asked as Kylie turned her head to look away.

Kylie hated to face the hell she was living through. She’d rather pretend it wasn’t happening and bottle all her emotions up. However, Kevin wouldn’t let her. He knew that it was a lot inside she needed to let out so he pushed her to talk.

“Where yo mama at lil’ mama and what was the song you was thinking about when you ran over that weak ass nigga?” Kevin asked as he led Kylie down the street with his arm around her waist.

A part of Kylie wanted Kevin to let her go, but she was too afraid to say anything. Besides it felt good to have someone touching her in a loving way rather than beating her. Kylie wanted to feel love and warmth, so she let Kevin’s arm stay around her waist as she began to relax and replied to his questions.

“Yea, she did this to my face. She’s evil,” Kylie said as Kevin grabbed her chin and turned her head to face him.

Kylie saw Kevin’s warm, caring soul through his eyes as he stared at her with a pained and concerned look. She saw in his eyes the same look she saw in her father’s eyes every time that he looked at her mother. That made Kylie’s heart flutter like a million butterflies. Kylie felt strength as Kevin looked into her eyes, encouraging her to answer his questions.

“I was thinking about a song I wrote for my parents. They’re dead...that’s why I’m here. I don’t have anyone else,” Kylie said with tears in her eyes.

Kylie felt so lonely and exposed at that moment as she walked down the block with Kevin. She hadn’t let anyone into her mind or feelings in a long time. It felt strange and scary letting Kevin in, but she knew she needed someone. Kevin looked at Kylie with compassion as he wiped away her tears.

“It’s okay lil’ mama. I got you now. I ain’t never had a muthafucka look out for me…nobody, but my brother. That’s why I’m gonna look out for you. You don’t deserve that shit. You a good girl...that’s why I gotcha!” Kevin said looking at Kylie smiling.

Kevin had seen too many girls in the street and hood that were only out to fuck, get money from niggas, and get high. Kylie was different and he knew it. He couldn’t let her get away. He needed her just as much as she needed him at that moment.

Kylie couldn’t help, but to smile at Kevin’s understanding and natural instinct to protect her. She felt a sense of security with Kevin. She knew that sh
e would be safe when he was around so she opened up to him a little more on their hour walk to Kroger. Kylie told him about her parents and her brother, and her motivation to write songs. Kevin was very sweet and attentive the whole while, listening attentively to Kylie as he chain smoked Newports.

By the time they made it to the store, Kylie felt like she knew Kevin for years. They joked, laughed, and held hands as they walked through the store and shopped. Kevin encouraged Kylie to get some snacks for herself at the store and then offered to pay for everything once they got in line. Kylie stood there at the register and stared as Kevin pulled a huge wad of $20’s and $100’s out of his pocket to pay for their food. Kylie started to pull the $20 bill Aunt Tricey had given her out of her bra, but Kevin stopped her.

“You keep yo money baby girl. You straight when you with me. I told you I got you. I ain’t no trick, but if I fuck witcha, I fuck witcha the long way, and I fucks with you pretty lady,” Kevin said laughing after seeing the expression on Kylie’s face.

Kylie had a confused look on her face because she remembered how he said he didn’t save hoes. She quickly realized that was all a front Kevin put on for his friends. She knew that the Kevin she was seeing now was the real him and she couldn’t help, but laugh as she helped him get the bags and they left the store.

Outside Kevin ran into a boy he knew who offered them a ride back to the hood. The fat, light-skinned boy in the driver’s seat who Kevin referred to as Skeet, stared at Kylie with lust as Kevin encouraged her to get in the car. Kevin could see that Kylie was hesitant, so he glanced back to see the boy winking at Kylie as she cringed. Kylie didn’t know if she should get in because she was already attacked once, but Kevin reassured her it was alright.

“You straight when you with me lil’ mama. Forreal.” Kevin said raising his shirt, brandishing his gun as he smiled at Kylie and then turned so Skeet could see the gun too.

The look on Skeet’s face told Kylie that he wouldn’t violate her, so she got in and they rode home in the kush smoke filled car as Yo Gotti’s song, ‘Trust No Bitch,’ blast through the speakers.

Once they got back on Kney street Kylie made them stop three houses down before she got out of the car. She didn’t want Aunt Tricey to see her getting out of a car with boys because she knew that would mean a beating and cursing out. Kylie quickly climbed out of the back seat as Kevin got out with her, smiling.

“So lil’ mama, when can I see you again?” Kevin asked as he helped her get the groceries out of the backseat.

Kylie blushed as Kevin held the bag and her hand at the same time. She wanted so badly to go with him right then. Anywhere was better than Aunt Tricey’s house.

“I don’t know. She doesn’t let me do anything or go anywhere. I guess if you see me on the porch one day you can come holla at me,” Kylie said in her best hood imitation.

Kevin stood there with a straight face for a second before he and Kylie burst into hysterical laughter. Kevin was so surprised and amused by Kylie’s hood talk he couldn’t stop laughing, and neither could she. When the tickles finally subsided, Kevin pulled the receipt from Kroger out of his pocket and quickly wrote his number down, handing it to Kylie.

“Aye, don’t take my number for shit,” Kevin said as Kylie reached out her hand to grab the paper, “Call me for real...any time that you need me. I got you!” Kevin said as he admired Kylie’s butt as she took the number and turned to walk away.

“I will call you when I can,” Kylie said smiling at Kevin.

Suddenly, Kevin walked over to Kylie. He stood so close to her that she could feel his bottom lip graze her forehead. His touch sent chills all up and down her spine.

“Make sure you call me for real. I can help you Kylie if you let me. For real. We’re more alike than you may think, and we might be good for each other. Give it a chance...I mean, what have you got to lose? Think about it, okay?” Kevin asked as he kissed Kylie gently on the forehead and stepped back.

Kylie stood there for a second with her eyes closed, lingering in the warm, tingly feeling Kevin’s kiss gave her. She opened her eyes to see Kevin standing there smiling, waiting on her response.

“I’ll call you. I promise.” Kylie whispered as Kevin smiled and then jumped back into the car with his friend and disappeared down the street.

Kylie stopped at the end of her aunt’s driveway and stared down the street in the direction Kevin went. She wished she could have went with him to escape the hell she lived in. Little did she know, but she would soon find out that Kevin’s house was just as bad. However, anything was better than being beat and put down by Aunt Tricey daily. At least at Kevin’s house she could be with him and he would protect her. She would always have someone to talk to and love on her.

Kylie got lost in a daydream of her and Kevin together outside of Memphis, happy and productive. She saw herself living the life her parents had and she was happy. Kylie was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice the car in her aunt’s driveway as she walked up the walk way. However, when she got on the porch her heart stopped when she saw Aunt Tricey in the window and heard her daughter Alicia’s voice inside. Kylie shuddered as she stood there thinking about what would happen to her now that there would be two people around who hated her and wanted to make her life miserable. Kylie swallowed the lump in her throat and silenced the screams inside as she opened the door and stepped into a pack of hungry, vicious wolves.

  Chapter 3

As soon as Kylie walked in and shut the door behind her Aunt Tricey started her verbal assault. Kylie barely had time to put her bags down before Aunt Tricey was in her face yelling.

“Where the hell you been wanch? It’s almost 7:30. I told yo funky ass to come straight back. I saw you with that nigga out there you lil’ hott hoe. Probably been out fucking like yo mama used to!” Tricey yelled, mushing Kylie in the head.

Kylie just stood there with tears in her eyes as Aunt Tricey continued to rant. Tricey yelled a barrage of insults at Kylie then got her daughter Alicia involved. Kylie hadn’t even noticed Alicia, her boyfriend Derrick, and her children Alissa and Brian sitting on the couch, hidden by piles of trash. Before she knew it though, Alicia was in her face yelling too.

“Answer my mama ugly ass lil’ girl. You hear her talking to yo stupid ass. Where have you been?” Alicia yelled, grabbing Kylie in the collar of her shirt as Aunt Tricey stood back smiling.

Kylie could tell that Aunt Tricey was happy to have Alicia there to do her dirty work for her even though she loved to beat and inflict pain on Kylie herself. She hated the physical exercise, so she egged on Alicia instead.

“Yea she always do that. Stand there like a fucking mute when you talking to her. Then the lil’ bitch had the audacity to snatch something from me earlier. Her funky ass getting besides herself. Now I catch ha getting out the car with a nigga I know she been fucking!” Tricey yelled as she wobbled back over to her chair as Alicia continued to hold Kylie.

“No Aunt Tricey I have never had sex. Some boys tried to hurt me. That boy saved me and brought me home. I didn’t do anything, but what you told me,” Kylie cried as her voice trembled.

Kylie could feel her heart beating in her throat as she looked around the cluttered room at everyone’s faces. She hoped that someone would do or say something to help her. Derrick had a smirk on his face as he lustfully stared back into Kylie’s eyes. He offered no help, he actually seemed to be enjoying the show. Kylie’s cousin, Alissa, smiled and licked out her tongue when she looked at her. Kylie didn’t expect any sympathy from her anyway because she hated Kylie and was always jealous because Kylie was richer, prettier, thinner, and smarter than her.

Alissa was just like her mother, Alicia and grandmother, Tricey, a big, fat, jealous, hateful girl with nothing going for herself. Tears fell from Kylie’s eyes as she looked at her cousin, Brian. He had a pained expression on his face as he stared back at Kylie while biting his bottom lip. Brian was always nice to Kylie even though his mother hated
it. He didn’t like the way they treated her and would often get in trouble for defending her.

Kylie mouthed the words, “Help Me,” to Brian as tears fell from her eyes and Alicia continued to curse.

“Oh yea lil’ bitch, you was fucking and you being disrespectful...I got something for yo ass. Let’s see if you was fucking!” Alicia yelled as she quickly yanked Kylie’s shirt over her head unexpectedly.

Kylie tried to hold on, but at 210 pounds, Alicia overpowered her, knocking her to the floor. Kylie yelled out, pleading for them to stop as Brian got up off the couch rushing forward to help her.

“Stop that shit, mama. She didn’t do nothing!” Brian yelled as he stepped closer, but Aunt Tricey used her cane to grab him by the leg.
