He met her eyes. “If I had, I hope that I wouldn’t have decided to masquerade as one. But I might have. I was pretty much willing to do anything, to use anyone to catch Davenport.”
Naomi met his eyes steadily. She might not know everything about him, but she knew some important things. He loved his family. He was basically an honest man. A courageous one. And an understanding one. Someone she could depend on. It had helped to discover that his brother Ian was real and that what he’d told her on the beach was the truth.
But even barring those details, she knew him all right. Hadn’t she recognized him on some level the first time she’d seen him?
Wasn’t that why she was so afraid? “I don’t want to start over,” she said.
He grabbed her hands then, held on. “I’m not taking no for an answer here, Naomi.”
She lifted her chin. “You’ve had your say. The least you can do is hear me out.”
He didn’t release her, but he nodded.
“I don’t want to start over with you. I want to build on what we’ve already begun. And I have a confession to make.”
His hands tightened painfully on hers. “What?”
“I’m falling in love with you, too. In fact, I think I already have.”
He lifted her hands, pressed his lips to them. “We’ll take things slowly this time, Naomi.”
She pulled him closer, brushed her lips over his. “No, I don’t think so. Why mess with success?”
As she deepened the kiss, she drew him down on top of her, and her hands became busy with the snap on his jeans.
“We can’t…your arm…”
“We can….” She’d already freed him, and in spite of his words, his hands had made quick work of her panties.
“We’ll just have to improvise.” Her laugh was low, sultry, and held a future of promises.
With a groan, he tested her. She was so wet, so hot, so ready. His. As he slipped fully into her, he framed her face with his hands. “I never looked for this. Never expected to find someone…someone I don’t want to live without. We’re going to be improvising for the rest of our lives.”
“That’s the idea.”
They were both smiling as he brought his mouth back to hers.
