  “Its time to change.”

  “But where will we live?”

“In a Vardo round the back.” John smiled and tilted her chin. Jo was lost for words as he kissed her.

  “I take it that’s a yes?”

Jo nodded and gazed at the diamond. “I’m good at pig’s head stew.” She said.

“Well that’s alright then.” John closed his eyes and hugged her to him. He never wanted to let her go again.

  “Let’s go and tell Hattie.”

They walked down the hall hand in hand and out to the marquee, where the party was in full swing. Guests toasted each other as the band began a Highland fling and everyone took to the floor.

Hattie whirled past with Maurice and nearly fell over when she saw Jo. She stopped and stared at them, then shook her head and began to smile. She turned to the band and caught the eye of the lead singer. The music ended abruptly and everyone looked around to see why. The singer picked up the microphone and started to sing:

“Never seen you look so lovely as you look tonight...”

John took Jo’s hand. Her diamond ring flashed under the spotlight as he led her to the floor.

“Lady in Red…” The guests began to clap.

  “I’ll never forget…”

The clapping built into a thunderous round of applause.

  “The way you look tonight...”

Jo’s romance with the gypsy began with his first kiss. She’d never forgotten it and never would, as he kissed her again and again and again…

  The Agent

Hilary Hargreaves stared at the half-wit before her. She removed her tortoiseshell glasses and leaned forward to peer at the dishevelled chef. Was that cocaine on his nose or had he been snorting icing sugar when dusting his fairy cakes that morning?

She tapped her pen against the palm of her hand and considered giving him a good spanking but he’d either like it or have her up on an abuse charge. Hilary sighed, another day in paradise at Hargreaves Promotions. She dismissed him with a wave of her hand and reached into the top drawer of her desk. The ice blue glass of her Bombay gin twinkled invitingly and Hilary poured herself a bracer, surely she was getting too old for all this…
