“Bonnie please don’t tell me that you are thinking something bad about Damon?” Angelica voice asked after a few moments went by. She knew me so well.
“No never.” My voice gave of a nervous chuckle. “Oh what was it you wanted me to do about Damon.”
“Oh right.” She said as if that had left her mind, but something told me that it had never really left. “I want you to talk to Jay for me.”
“But-” I began to protested. I was going to tell her that I didn’t want to talk to the rude jerk we both knew called Jay, but she cut me off.
“Oh Bonnie he did take you home right? So he can’t be that bad, oh what happened when he took you home?”
“Nothing really.” I told her not feeling like reliving what had happened with Jay.
“Oh, well if that is true maybe you could talk to him and get him to go on a double date or something.” She beamed.
“Ang, I don’t like Jay and he doesn’t go on dates.” I told her trying to get her to remember that fact about him. “And didn’t you just say that you were acting weird that night with Damon….why go through that again?”
“You don’t understand Bonnie.” She told me her voice sounding as if it was in pain. “I can’t stop thinking about him and I want to at least talk to him without having to do it in school, with everyone knowing.”
“Beth knows about you and Damon.”
“What how does she know? You didn’t tell her did you?” Her voice was now loud and full of false betrayal. She was joking, she didn’t care if I told Beth or not.
“No she was there on her date.” I told her trying to ease her fake worry.
“Oh and she didn’t say hi.”
“She said that-“
“Bonnie!” I heard my mother yell.
“Wait one minute Ang.” I sighed she chuckled. She must have heard my mother yell my name. “Yes mom.”
“I need you down stairs, now.”
“Ok.” I sighed yet again. “Ang I’ll try to call you back ok.”
“Yeah I need to finish that homework anyway, did you do that homework that I didn’t write down.” She asked.
“No. I guess I will be up late.” I said and then hit my head. “I’ll talk to you later, bye.”
“Bye.” She hung up as did I.
I went down stairs and saw that my mom was in the kitchen looking in the refrigerator. She turned and opened her mouth then stopped when she saw me. I frowned knowing she was getting ready to call me again.
“There you are. I need you to go to the store to get some more food. I am going to cook and we don’t have anything.” She said going to the table were her purse sat. “I need you to get what I have on this list.”
“Mom, Mary cooked the other day and we still have a lot of that food left.” I said trying to keep my body in this house.
“I don’t want to eat that. Now go and get that food.” She said handing me the list and some money. “Go fast I want to have all of this cooked before your dad gets home, oh remember some ice cream to, Luria ate all of it yesterday. I am going to have to tell your sister she owes me some money and not to keep bringing this food over here. She knows she needs it. Does she think I can’t cook for my family?”
I didn’t say anything about what she had just said. I even tried to forget about what she had just said, but her talking to Mary about not bringing food over here wouldn’t leave my mind. I wanted Mary to keep bring food over the house.
My eyes looked at the clock and saw that it was just past one. It would take no longer then a half an hour to get everything at the store then come back. There was enough money in my hand to get everything on her list and to buy some gas.
I looked passed her to the refrigerator and wanted nothing more than to sigh. I didn’t like the fact that she didn’t want to eat the food just because Mary had cooked it. It made me feel like if I did something she didn’t approve of then she would always hold it against me.
“Okay, I’ll be back.” I told her.
I left to go get dinner and my gas. It did only take me the time I thought it would. After my mom cooked and I ate I went upstairs to do all of my homework. By the time I was done I was ready to go to bed.
That night even without wanting to I had dreams of the forbidden four and I knew at that moment I wanted to know if they were the ones doing things to these girls. But I knew the old saying goes: Curiosity killed the cat.
Chapter 5
Killer
Waking up on a Monday morning, less than an hour from having to be in a classroom, was not a good feeling. Even as my hand hit the alarm clock, that was ringing loudly in my background, in my sleepy state, I still found myself wanting to crawl back into bed and never get up again.
“Okay lazy bones, it’s time to get up.” I heard my mother voice and sighed.
It was way too early to wake up. I had stayed up to late doing homework and studying to even want to go to school, to turn in the very homework that made me feel so sleepy. I wanted to sleep off this frustration of seeing my classroom filled with overly animated teens who would want to talk about things I didn’t care to much to speak about.
“Last time Bonnie and I’m coming in there.” My mother voice seemed closer than before. It could be because she had said that sentence louder than her other one or my nerves were hurting knowing she was speaking with truth.
“I’m up.” I yelled and put my head in my pillow. I closed my eyes again and tried to fight the sleep that was coming to me so easily. It felt so good so peaceful…
Cold water landed hardly on my face and I jumped up so fast that I thought I had hurt my neck. My hair was soaked and my face was worst.
My eyes looked around me searching for the person who could have done such a thing. I turned slowly and saw my mother standing over me with a cup in her hand. I glanced at her feeling as if at this moment if I opened my mouth, I would be grounded for life.
“I told you don’t make me come in here. You’ll be late and this is your most important year of high school.” She frowned as her blue eyes scanned my face. “Get that glace from your eyes and get ready to go, now.”
I didn’t say anything and I wished I could. I wanted to say something, but my words would get me a death sentence. I got up from bed and put my feet on the ground. I smiled at her and my mom eyes stared at me then my bed.
“Oh and when you get back change those sheets.” She told me firmly then walked out of the room.
I sighed and thought about telling her she should since she was the one who though the water on me.
After the shock of how I was wakening up wore off, I went to take a shower and changed my clothes. I looked in the mirror and made sure I looked nice enough that my mother would say I looked fine. I smiled at that thought.
My mother always wanted me to look better then my best.
Good enough. I thought. I grabbed my books and put them in my book bag.
I went down stairs and saw that my dad was in the kitchen he had a cup of coffee in his hand and was moving around fast. He must have been late for work or something else that was important enough that he hadn’t even noticed I had walked into the room.
My dad tended to know the moment I walked into the house. He told me it was because I tended to walk lightly on my feet, something I thought I didn’t do, and unlike my mother and sister I never tried to make my presence known. I still had no idea what that meant but never cared enough to try and figure it out.
“Good morning dad.” I said briefly and went to get some bread to make toast.
“Morning, sweetie.” He said and turned to kiss me on the cheek. “I’m running late and your mother already left. Make sure to lock the door, bye.”
The words left his mouth almost as fast as he left me in the kitchen standing there by myself. I turned my eyes back to the bread that I now held in my hand. I placed it in the toaster and hoped that I wouldn’t burn it.
I honestly needed to learn how to cook for myself. I waited for the
toast to get done and thought about how quiet it was in the house. No one was here but me and it had been that way ever since Mary had moved out.
My parents spent too much of their time working. I thought trying to stop the memory of me and Mary always being on our own growing up. Babysitters were like a gift to my mother. She loved to make sure she always had one on spend dial.
Then when Mary got old enough to watch me, my parents let her. Mary was the best babysitter, but she would at times allow her friends to come over. I honestly thought she did it so that our parents would get upset at her for it, but they didn’t seem to mind as long as nothing crazy was going on.
So once Mary found that out she started to let her now husband come over when our parents weren’t home. Now this got my parents attention, more so my mother’s. Our mother felt that Mary now husband was bad for her and she just wouldn’t allow it.
But by the time our parents found out about Mary now husband she was already head over hills.
The bread jumped up out of the toaster and startled me. I put what I wanted on the bread and ate it. When I was done I left for school.
Traffic went by nicely and I got to the school building with a few minutes to spare. I decided to stay in my car for the few minutes that I had left.
I turned my car off and looked around to see if I saw my friends, but it seemed they were nowhere in sight. I guessed they may be in the café, but had no real idea where they could be.
“Looking for me?”
Jay voice made me jump.
“No never.” I told him with sarcasm in my voice. I stared at his face hardly for a few moments then turned my head to the side. “What made you come to school today?”
The question would be dumb if I had been asking anyone else, but with Jay, school never seemed to be on the type of his list of things to do. Monday’s where one of the days that the Forbidden Four, excerpt Leon, didn’t come to school.
His blue eyes stared at me with amusement. He seemed to be completely happy that I had asked that question.
“I came so I could see you.” His words came out so softly and with so much confidence that I wanted to roll my eyes. “I heard you got into a bit of trouble the other day.”
My eyes went wide at that. I didn’t want him to know about that. I should have told Leon not to tell anyone. But I had been so busy trying to run away from him that it had slipped my mind.
Jay pushed some of his brown-gold hair from his eyes and stared at me with a small grin.
“I wish I had been there, but sadly Leon loves the forest more than the rest of us.” His words spoke with something that was beyond what he was saying to me. I wasn’t sure but I felt like it was some kind of inside joke.
“Are you trying to tell me something?” I asked him trying to watch him carefully.
“Indeed not, my lady.” He spoke like he was from a different time and it annoyed me. “But honestly I think you need to get out of that car before the bell rings.” As soon as he spoke those words the bell rang. I saw a huge grin go across his lips. “See I told you.”
I tried to open my door without even telling him I was doing so, quietly hoping to hit him with the car door. When I tried to open my car door it wouldn’t. I pushed at the door and then looked up at Jay who looked ready to laugh at me. His body was lining against my car door and I kept pushing at it as if to tell him to get off of my door.
“Say please and I will think about it.” He whispered lining in though my opened window.
I kept pushing at the door and was about ready to calm out through the other door, but just as the thought went across my mind Jay quickly moved from my door making it fly open. My body flew from the car and I thought I was going to hit the ground but firm arms caught me midair.
Jay wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close to him. His eyes stared into mine and he still had that grin on his face, which I so desperately wanted to smack off.
“If only you had said please, but I honestly like this opinion better.” He whispered his face getting closer to mine.
“Let me go.” I told him turning my head to look at the school building where there were students walking slowly into the building, for their eyes were on me and Jay.
Great, just what I need. Rumors that me and Jay were together or rather I was Jay latest victim.
“Jay class is going to start soon.” I said then looked back at him, my eyes narrowing. I was trying to look and sound as if I was getting really angry, but it didn’t seem like it was working. Jay arms stayed wrapped around me and his lips kept that grin.
“Don’t worry I’ll get you a pass.” He seemed like he was truly telling me the truth and I hated that I believed he could really do that for me.
“Listen, I don’t want you to get me a pass and honestly I don’t want anything from you Jay. Now let me go so I can go on living my life.” I told him trying to move from his grip on me. “Just leave me alone, Jay.”
His eyes stared into mine. Small golden traces begin to enter around his iris and this made me stop my movement in his arms. I began to stare closely into his eyes trying to find out what he was hiding.
Everything around us seemed as if it had stopped or rather never even was there. I stared into his eyes and my hard press feelings for him seemed like they were slowly melting away. I didn’t feel so on the edge about being held in his arms that much anymore, but my mind kept shouting not to listen to this feeling, not to let go to this feeling. It screamed to fight it.
“Bonnie, can I walk you to class?” He asked me. I could easily hear the smile that I just knew was now on his beautiful full lips.
I pushed my mind from that thought and closed my eyes, suddenly. It was as if that was the only thing I could do to break whatever spell he was trying to use on me.
After I took a deep breath I opened my eyes. I stared at his perfect face and saw that it looked put off. It was as if he was angry about something. I stared hardly at him not understanding why he was so upset. A minute ago he seemed so full of himself and now he looked as if he was ready to push me off a cliff.
He let me go and my body hit my car door making it close. I stared at him wide eyed. I had no idea what was happening. Why did he look so upset?
“Well Jay you are as confusing as ever.” I told him trying to gather myself.
“So are you.” He murmured and stared at me with those blue eyes of his. “Going to class or would you rather come with me somewhere.”
I blinked at him, thinking he had lost his mind if he thought I would go anywhere with him. I shook my head at him and wanted to laugh.
He was becoming the Jay I had become to know these last few days. It was so funny how I had known of him all these years yet I didn’t know him until a few days ago.
Jay was starting to prove all of my theories of him to be true. I wondered if he knew this. He didn’t seem the least bit dumb; in fact he seemed highly intelligent at times. I didn’t know why I thought that. He hadn’t done really anything that would show that he was intelligent but there was just something about him that ringed do not underestimate.
He turned his head from me briefly looking at a brand new car that was parked in the parking lot. It looked nice to my eyes. Beautiful color and all. I wish I knew more about cars so I could know what kind it was.
Jay turned back to look at me and smiled. He must have noticed my eyes looking at the car.
“That’s my new baby.” He smiled. “My parents got it for me, my report card looked lovely.” He laughed. It sounded as if he was quoting someone.
“I’ve never seen your parents before.” I said to him hoping that the second bell wouldn’t ring soon.
“They are always away on business.” He told me off handily. It seemed like he didn’t want to talk about this subject but I wasn’t going to let him get off of it easily.
“And they leave four teenage boys all alone.” I said to him trying to get some kind of information out of him.
The cool air hit m
y skin and made me shiver slightly. I put my arms around my body and watched Jay who then closed his eyes. He started to breathe in deeply. He seemed on edge about something suddenly.
“Do you want to come with me?” He asked quickly so firmly that it was like yes could only be my answer.
It was like he was almost begging me to come with him. His voice had taken on this pledging tone and it was grabbing at me with such a force that I found myself wanting to tell him yes.
The second bell rang high around us. My eyes stared at the school building and I saw that no one was around anymore. If I was going to go to class this was going to be the time or if I wasn’t I needed to leave with him now before a teacher saw me outside with him.
I bit my lip. If I leave with him my mom and dad would kill me for missing school. They always made sure I was in school all the time. They never let me miss a day of school. I would have to be almost dead for them to even think about it.
My eyes turned back to look at Jay. He was eyeing me as if he just knew my answer would have to be yes. Did he really think he knew me so well?
He didn’t know me at all. In fact why was I even thinking about leaving with him? I thought he killed those girls. I think him and Damon even Nathaniel all had something to do with it anyway.
Why should I risk getting in trouble with my parents for a boy that I didn’t even like.
I knew saying no would take that smug look off of his face. That thought made my lips want to go up in a smile.
“I can’t. School is very important to me.” I said and looked over at the school building.
“I bet it is.” He whispered and looked like he rolled his eyes but I wasn’t sure. “I guess I can be back to see you during lunch.”
“Come to school just for lunch.” I said as I rolled my eyes. He was so impossible.
“I get hungry to you know.” He told me eyeing me up and down as if he was hungry for something else at that moment.
“Bye Jay.” I said to him and turned to walk away from him.
