Spirit Water turned and nodded to Alex. The young man stood up and opened the lid of a plain wooden box, lifted it above his head and tossed the contents towards the sky. Gusts of wind caught the ashes, lifted them high, floated them above the small circle, and then disappeared with them into the four directions.
The four of them shared the pipe in silence and when they had drawn and released the last of the smoke, Alex turned to Jesse and Martine.
“I don’t know how to tell you how grateful I am to both of you for everything you’ve done for me and for Shannon.”
Jesse stood and drew Martine up with him. “The journey to find the truth has been our gift as much as yours.” He smiled at the young man, and Martine lifted on her toes to hug his neck. “I know Shannon was your only family. Jesse and I are also on our own, and we would be honored if you’d join us in forging the ties for a brand new family – with Spirit Water at our head, of course.”
Alex’s eyes glistened and he reached his hand out to shake with Jesse and return Martine’s hug.
“I’d like that very much.”
“Good.” Spirit Water closed the lid of his case and stood. I like lots of turkey and dressing.”
Jesse threw back his head and laughed, as Martine sputtered, “How come everyone looked in my direction when talk got around to cooking holiday dinners?”
