Keeping Her Safe: A Billionaire Second Chance Romance Page 10

by Summer Brooks

“I’m falling for you too,” I admitted, the words spilling out of my mouth before I had the chance to stop them. But I had no idea what that meant. Where would we go from here? In what world would it make sense for us to be together? It was hard for me to picture myself hobnobbing with the people in Eric’s life. Maybe I’d have an easier time doing so, if Charles Fields hadn’t interrupted our trip to the gala. One thought drifted to the next in disjointed array.

  “What happened to Mr. Fields?”

Eric’s expression changed. The mere mention of the name had shifted his face from gentle to angry and threatening in less time than it took to ask the question. “That bastard is behind bars,” he barked in a low voice, “and he’s going to stay there.”

In my head, I knew that this was the best possible outcome for the situation, but looking at Eric’s face, I was sure that he disagreed. He wouldn’t be happy unless Fields was dead, and even then, it probably wouldn’t feel like enough. I could sympathize with him, but I couldn’t feel that kind of anger myself, and I was the one with the bullet hole in my arm.

I reached out with my good arm to grab Eric’s hand. I couldn’t make the situation any better, but I could maybe go through it with him, and eventually, we’d both be ok again. My physical scars would heal alongside his mental ones.

He leaned in to kiss me then, pressing his lips against mine. His kisses were hard and needy, and I wanted them to last forever. Even as he pulled away, and looked into my eyes, my lips begged for his return.

“Let’s go away together,” he said in the same voice that I would use to say something like “let’s order pizza.”

My eyes grew wide. I couldn’t do that, could I? Go on a trip somewhere with a man that I was clearly head over heels for?

  Why the hell not?

“Where are we going to go?” I asked him.

“Have you ever been to Copenhagen?” he asked, answering my question with a question.

  I shook my head.

“It’s gorgeous this time of year,” he said.

The truth was, I probably couldn’t even point to Copenhagen on a map if I tried. It certainly wasn’t a place I had ever dreamed of going, but the way that he said it made it sound incredible. And I had a feeling that if I was traveling with Eric, I would love just about any place that he took me.

“We will have an adventure,” he continued.

  And I believed him.
