She looked out over the harbor, beyond the race boats lining up at the starting line, and pointed to a pair of black ducks getting up from the far shore.
“Any ideas about our next story?” she asked.
“My contact in Baltimore informs me that a substantial amount of money, millions, is being sent from our impoverished local Catholic parish to rebuild the huge Catholic cathedral building up there.”
“Parishioners complain our local church is falling apart from rot. Where is the money coming from if the parish here is broke?”
“That’s the mystery. The elderly priest who runs our local River Sunday church is pretty tight-lipped. Folks are very worried something illegal is going on.”
“I think we’ll do a cover article on that Presidential visit, the one that awarded the Pastor his medal.”
“Another hornet’s nest,” she said, smiling.
Harry said, “I’m not so sure. Maybe the tension in this town is cut down to size. People can face up better to things they did wrong in the past.”
He pointed to the black ducks and said, “Boats are scaring them up. They might be the same pair I saw when I first went up to the Wilderness to cover Walker’s boat,” Harry said.
He had discovered the hidden story, the secret of this small town. He had accomplished his mission as a reporter. He had proved to himself that he was still a good newspaperman. This time he would not be fired for doing the right thing. Besides, this church mystery might be a great story too. He’d have to look into the old priest, Father Tom.
The crowd stood around Harry and Annie yet Harry felt as though the two of them were the only people in the world. Annie grinned as if she knew what he was thinking and took his hand. Together they watched the ducks fly up in the sunlight above the boats roaring below them. Six brightly colored race boats came by the judging stand in their parade lap, then fell into line for the start of the heat. The male and female black ducks winged out and around the slave monument, heading first in the direction of the Wilderness Swamp, then cupped their wings, and set down far out on the harbor water near the point, their heads turned and their wary eyes on the racers.
