  GLORIA STEINEM is an internationally renowned feminist, journalist, and political commentator. She cofounded Ms. magazine in 1971 and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. Her books include Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983), Marilyn: Norma Jean (1986), and Moving beyond Words (i993).

  JENNIFER STULLER is a professional writer and critic, specializing in gender and sexuality in popular culture. She is the author of Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors: Superwomen in Modern Mythology (2010).

  FREDRIC WERTHAM (1895–1981) was a German-American psychiatrist who wrote for both scientific journals and the popular press. He authored several widely reviewed books, including The Brain as an Organ (1934), The Circle of Guilt (1956), A Sign for Cain: An Exploration of Human Violence (1968), and The World of Fanzines: A Special Form of Communication (1973). His best-known book was, of course, Seduction of the Innocent (1954).

  PHILIP WYLIE (1902–1971) was a best-selling midcentury author whose books included Gladiator (1930), When Worlds Collide (1933), A Generation of Vipers (1942), and An Essay on Morals (1947). He was a prolific novelist, short story author, screenwriter, and essayist.

  Editors’ Bios

  CHARLES HATFIELD is an associate professor of English at California State University, Northridge. He specializes in word and image studies, comics and graphic novels, children’s literature and culture, popular culture, and the literature of the fantastic. He has published widely on various aspects of comics and cartoons, for such journals as Image TexT, English Language Notes, the Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, Transatlantica, and the Comics Journal. He is the author of Alternative Comics: An Emerging Literature (2005) and Hand of Fire: The Narrative Art of Jack Kirby (2011). He is currently working on a study of the graphic novelist Eddie Campbell.

  JEET HEER is writing a doctoral thesis on the cultural politics of Little Orphan Annie at York University in Toronto. He is the coeditor of Arguing Comics: Literary Masters on a Popular Medium (2004) and A Comics Studies Reader (2009). With Chris Ware and Chris Oliveros, he is editing a series of volumes reprinting Frank King’s Gasoline Alley, four volumes of which have been published by Drawn and Quarterly. He is also the editor of Clare Brigg’s Oh Skin-nay and is writing the introductions to a multivolume series reprinting George Herriman’s Krazy Kat. His essays have appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review, the Literary Review of Canada, the Boston Globe, Slate.com, and numerous other publications.

  KENT WORCESTER is a professor of political science at Marymount Manhattan College. With Jeet Heer, he is the coeditor of Arguing Comics: Literary Masters on a Popular Medium (2004) and A Comics Studies Reader (2009). He is also the author of C.L.R. James: A Political Biography (1996), and a longtime contributor to the Comics Journal.
