“How are our passengers?” the vampire asked.
“Tied up in the cargo bay and complaining loudly.” Puppy grinned. She watched Fangs press a sequence of buttons. “Are you sure you can helm this thing without the help of the AnyBook?”
“I’ve got someone ready to talk me in…” Fangs flicked another switch and the computer screen lit up to show Cube, his square head fitting the frame perfectly.
“You can pilot a nuclear sub, professor?” Puppy asked in surprise.
“Pilot one?” said Cube. “I helped design these things. And I must say our Russian counterparts are very much looking forward to having this one returned to them.”
Fangs adjusted a few more settings and spoke into his headset. “Set depth at three two eight feet. Speed at zero six knots.”
“Zero six knots is perfect, Agent Enigma. You’ll be home in no time, and you should be back within range of blue-tooth communication now.”
Right on cue, one of Puppy’s front teeth lit up and a familiar voice gurgled out of it. “Agent Brown, I hear you survived your transformation in tact.”
“I did indeed, sir,” said Puppy. “How are things where you are?”
“Couldn’t be better,” said Phlem. “The vampire clans have been escorted home, the werewolves’ satellite has been disabled remotely, and Cube has whipped up an antidote for the werewolf DNA. By the next real full moon, the only creatures howling will be genuine werewolves.”
“Speaking of werewolves…” Puppy began.
“We’re way ahead of you, Agent Brown,” said Phlem. “Claw’s technicians have been rounded up, and we’re working with the authorities in Dun Laoghaire to repair the damage Claw and Canis did to the West Pier. We’ll have secure transport waiting for your prisoners as soon as you land. That just leaves the matter of the underwater base, the Wolf’s Lair…”
“What about it, sir?”
“I wondered whether MP1 should take it over as a kind of retreat, a secret location for agents to recuperate after dangerous missions?”
Fangs glanced at the video monitor as the submerged base disappeared into the gloom behind us. “I don’t know, sir,” he said. “It’s certainly secluded, but I don’t think anyone will be able to have any fun there.”
“And why not, Agent Enigma?”
Fangs whipped off his sunglasses and winked at Puppy. “It’s a bit of a dive down here.”
