Her gaze rose to his face and what she saw there paralyzed her. Gone was the cool, composed Trent she’d marveled at a thousand times. In his place was a warm-blooded man who felt sadness, anguish, grief. A man who really, truly felt.
His hand covered his heart and then he turned away from her. “Oh, God, Rebecca. God, Rebecca, we lost Eisenhower.”
She melted. Her frozen muscles as well as her formidable fears. She flew to him. Her arms about him, she pressed her cheek against his back. This man who hadn’t wanted to lose another child. “I know, Trent. I know, my love.”
Then she pulled him down to the ugly black couch with her and held him tight. He rested his head against the top of hers and then moved it down to kiss her cheek. It was wet; she must be crying again. No, it was Trent. Rocking back and forth, they comforted each other with words she would never remember.
The words didn’t matter. Their hearts did. Broken, healed, broken again. Then healed for good.
Trent pulled away to cup her face in his hands and brush her tears away with his thumbs. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I was afraid that facing the truth would make the pain more real. But it hurts either way. I’m so sad that we lost our baby.”
But found each other.
Rebecca placed her hand against the Eisenhower angel over Trent’s heart. Their other angel was up there somewhere, right? Smiling? Waiting for a different moment to enter their lives?
Of course that was it.
“I love you,” Trent said.
And this time she felt it, saw it, knew it.
Rebecca looked over at the castle, then gazed back on her husband. With Trent right by her side, she had that someone of her own to love she’d wanted all her life. Together, it was going to be all right. Together, it wasn’t so hard to believe in happy endings anymore.
