THE JOHN W. CAMPBELL AWARD FOR BEST NEW WRITER has been awarded every year, without interruption, since 1973. The Campbell tiara annually travels from one recipient to the next, and is currently worn by Mur Lafferty, whose qualifying publication (“1963: The Argument Against Louis Pasteur”) appeared in The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities, edited by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer.
Assembling any anthology of this magnitude is (alas!) a time-consuming endeavor; you’ll likely have noticed a few typographical and/or spelling errors, because there simply wasn’t time to proof read everything as it came in. I relied largely on material supplied by the writers themselves, and despite the fact that they were all careful about version tracking and edits, there is still a chance that some source or other might have differed slightly from the published canon. In such cases, please give the writers—and their original editors—the benefit of the doubt.
Some inclusions only appeared by special permission of the editors and publishers of the original sources, and for those early exemptions I am especially grateful. If you were impressed by work(s) that first appeared in any magazine or anthology listed in these pages, please check out some of their other offerings. Your patronage allows those publications to continue purchasing such treasures, and justifies the time invested in finding new writers.
What if I missed the Worldcon deadline?
Believe it or not, even if you missed the deadline to join one of the existing or future Worldcons in order to nominate on the current ballot, there are still some things you can do. Talk with others about the stories you appreciated, and the writers you noticed! My sincere wish is that every individual currently eligible for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer might enjoy a long, illustrious career. For that to happen though, every last one of them needs your support as a reader.
Express your opinions. You might not be able to nominate, but you can still talk about why you think any eligible writer should (or should not, as preference dictates) receive the award. It might be that another reader, already largely familiar with the field, will discover someone they’d missed. Word of mouth is a very powerful force.
And then, there is one last option. You could… maybe… just possibly… write a story.
Who knows? If you do, there’s a chance I’ll be able to include your name in the next volume. I’d like that, because I’m eager to
see what you’ll come up with.
Let’s fill the sky with comets.

As (and if) his name pertains to science fiction and fantasy, M. David Blake is a writer, editor, anthologist, and fan. It is in those last two roles that he serves as host to the rollicking, expansive assemblage now known as The Annual Campbellian Anthology.
Blake is the editor of STRAEON (scheduled for quarterly releases throughout 2014). He sincerely hopes you enjoyed this volume enough to return for the 2015 Campbellian Anthology.
This anthology was assembled under the influence of verum, cassia, and loureiroi.
