  Prologue

  Smitty

I’m pulling into my driveway when my message alert dings on my cell phone.

  Oct 12

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Hi. You absolutely don’t know me – well. Not exactly. Anyway I need your help with something. Your famous friend? He’s currently ignoring my messages but…see, he knows my best friend, quite intimately, and I’m trying to help a girl out.

This shit is crazy. Now these women are reaching out to me, to get to Rhys. I stop reading the message and almost hit delete but messenger pings again.

ZoeyDainelsAuthor: I realize you probably think I am some kind of weirdo. I’m not. I swear. Feel free to do a background check. You probably don’t remember this, but we’ve met before. I may or may not have danced the night away with you the night before a book signing a few months back. Your partner – Rhys, he ran off with KJ, my best friend. And, you pretty much disappeared after making sure I got back to my room safely. Ring a bell? I get it, it’s a long shot – if you could help me play matchmaker that would be grand!

My first thought is that this chick has got to be nuts. Why she’s messaging me, about Rhys, is beyond me. But, I’m feeling a little frisky, so I figure I’ll reply to her, for shits and giggles. Maybe on some off chance, she’s legit, and I do need to help my boy out. I do have a vague recollection of her and her friend, that’s about it though.

DylanSmith: Alright. I’m intrigued. Now that you have my attention. What makes you think that Rhys or your friend KJ want you to play matchmaker?

I’m ready to crawl into bed and crash, but the tiny bubbles pop up telling me that she’s typing, so I wait.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Holy shit. I wasn’t expecting a reply. Anyway, I can’t get into all the details – it’s not my story to tell but, trust me when I tell you that… we need to get these two back in contact somehow. Even if KJ seems to think otherwise.

DylanSmith: You realize how ridiculous you sound? And you admit that your friend’s not interested. What makes you think this is a good idea?

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: You realize that you sound like an asshole? Maybe this was a bad idea. I should have never messaged you in the first place.

DylanSmith: I’d venture to say, you’re right. On both counts. I’m sure your friend can handle herself, and if Rhys was interested, he could figure out how to get in touch.

  ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Rude.

  DylanSmith: Meddling.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: I don’t think I like you or your attitude, Mister.

I probably should have ended this conversation before now. And I really shouldn’t respond to her again.

DylanSmith: Well, I know I don’t like yours. So call it even. Now if you don’t mind…some of us work nightshift and would like to sleep.

That worked out well. I feel like I’m a twelve-year-old, arguing with a girl with cooties.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Oh shit. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize. I could have waited to….nevermind.

I don’t respond to that. Instead, I power down my phone and toss it on my dresser before I crawl into bed and shut my eyes.

  Oct 18

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: You have one missed video call from ZoeyDanielsAuthor.

DylanSmith: Are you serious right now? Don’t you think video calling someone you don’t know is a bit…over the top? There’s a reason I’ve not messaged you back. I said I wasn’t interested in your little plan.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Oh shut the fuck up. Asshole. KJ was right when she called you Jerk Face. I wasn’t trying to video call you. It was an accident. Like you’ve never hit the button by mistake.

DylanSmith: Way to bruise my ego. Here I thought you wanted to see my pretty face.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Goddamnit. I hate you. You won’t help me out, and yet you seem to enjoy harassing me.

DylanSmith: Who’s trying to video chat who? But if you want the number to call the cops…

She replies with a middle finger GIF, and I laugh.

  DylanSmith: You wish.

  ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Egotistical Pig.

DylanSmith: Was that a cop joke?

  ZoeyDanielsAuthor: No. Go away. Please.

  Jan 21

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Ok. Since you’re obviously not going to help me out with KJ and Rhys. I need another favor.

DylanSmith: Christ. Are you serious right now?

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Oh good! You responded. It’s been a while, I wasn’t sure. Anyway. I need a hot cop for a book cover, two to be exact. It’s a ménage. I’ve been stalking your profile. I probably shouldn’t admit that but, whatever. Too late now. Back to my question… I need you to pose for a book cover for me. The shoot is scheduled for March 10th, in Tallahassee. I’m sure you can make it. Thanks.

DylanSmith: The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Nice try. Come on. Do me a solid. Please? I happen to know your partner is going to be around too. In fact, he’s got a photo shoot set up the same day. You two could hang out! It would be great!

DylanSmith: You’re worse than a hemorrhoid.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: I knew you were still there! You have no idea how much this means to me. This cover is going to be perfect. You’re my hero.

DylanSmith: Wait. What the fuck are you talking about?

  DylanSmith: Zoey.

  DylanSmith: Hey crazy cakes.

  DylanSmith: Answer me, woman!

At this point, I’m not sure which one of us is crazier, but Zoey? She sure knows how to annoy the piss out of me.

  Jan 23rd

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Yay! It’s settled. I booked a room for you at Hotel Duvall for Friday and Saturday night March 9-10. Bring some dress clothes. Button down shirts, slacks. Jeans. Give me a casual look too. You’re going to look so damn hot on the cover. Wait until you see the female model. Oh and don’t mention this to Rhys yet. ;)

DylanSmith: I never agreed to this.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Oh come on. You’re not really going to let me down, are you? We’re friends. You promised you’d do me a solid!

DylanSmith: I didn’t promise shit. And I’m really close to blocking your number or profile whatever the fuck I need to do to get you to go away.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: You don’t really mean that. You like me. A lot. At lea
st you said you did before you tucked me in the last time we saw each other. Remember? You did that. You said, “I like you a lot Zoey, but I think it’s best for us if I say goodnight here.” It was really sweet and probably because I had too much to drink, otherwise, who knows what fun we could have had!

DylanSmith: Are you drunk right now? I am sure I never said that. I may have said you’re a pain in my ass, but I never said I liked you.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Aww, but you did D – you sure did. It was the sweetest thing ever. It made me think…I bet you’re just a big ol’ cuddly teddy bear underneath that tough guy exterior. You know when you finally take your uniform off at the end of the day? Bet on it. You’re a big pile of mush.

DylanSmith: Don’t call me D. Ever. And I’m far from sweet. Keep messing with me Zoey, and you’ll find out how wrong you are.

ZoeyDanielsAuthor: Oooh. Will I now? So you’re not a teddy bear in the bedroom? Does this mean you’ll spank me?

  Chapter One

  Mar 9th

  Smitty

  Fucking women.

  The whole lot of them.

I should have known this one would be nothing but trouble.

A year ago, I walked away from her. Kissed her hand and tucked her very tipsy self safely inside her hotel room in this very hotel. I never looked back or gave her a second thought.

Don’t get me wrong – blondie is a knockout, but I wasn’t interested then.

Now? Let’s just say, she has been a pain in my ass ever since she sent me a Facebook message back when my partner Rhys’ fucking photo went viral. I’ve never been so easily manipulated in my life. Damn her to hell. When I thought she’d give up and go away, she came back with a vengeance and a new plan. One that I eventually caved on because I’m a gentleman like that.

  Okay, that’s a lie.

I caved because sometime between when she came up with a crazy idea that I should let her put me on a cover and the next six weeks, things got even more interesting. And we started flirting. When we weren’t trying to kill each other via messenger, that is.

  And now, here I am.

Zoey’s flipped over onto her stomach, her long blonde locks splayed across my pillows. She lets out a snore as I sit back in the armchair in the corner of the room, nursing a glass of whiskey with a raging hard-on in my pants. I should be in that bed with her, she should be passed out because I’ve exhausted her body.

  Figures.

I honestly didn’t think she’d had that much to drink when she left the hotel bar with KJ. Otherwise, I would have taken a raincheck and caught up with her tomorrow, at the photo shoot she talked me into.

  Fuck this.

I toss back the rest of the whiskey and set the tumbler on the table before toeing off my dress shoes. Standing up, I strip down to my boxers and hang my dress clothes on the back of the chair I’ve just vacated before making my way across the hotel room to the bathroom to take a leak before I call it a night.

When I come out of the bathroom, I can’t help but chuckle and shake my head. The woman is sprawled out, taking up the entire double bed. I can see the outline of her body, her arms, and legs in opposite directions beneath the blanket I covered her with earlier.

Resigned that I’m sleeping with a case of blue balls tonight, I leave her to sleep by herself. Taking up residence in the empty double bed and fall asleep. Alone.

  ~*~

  Zoey

I roll over and peel open one eye as the bright sunlight peaks through the curtains, making my head hurt worse. Damn, just how much did I have to drink last night? It didn’t seem like that much at the time. I was enjoying myself. Dancing with a tall, dark, and very handsome…

A throaty chuckle startles me, both my eyes opening wide.

What the…oh God. There’s a half-naked man in my…no wait, I’m not in my room either.

  Shit!

“Morning, blondie,” he speaks, his raspy voice nearly making me clench my thighs together. “I figured you might need a little caffeine and some food to help take the edge off this morning.”

“Shh, no talking,” I groan, contemplating covering my head with a pillow, and he laughs at me.

  Dylan.

The man I’ve spent the past few months harassing via messenger. At least that’s what he likes to call it. I call it being friendly.

  Still.

Fuck him for being all thoughtful and shit. I’m not supposed to like him. Though, I got to admit, I really like what I see right now. Hell, I bet he could bench press me with those arms, and the black ink that swirls around his bicep, across his chest and half of his upper body? I’d love to trace each line with my tongue, right down his chest to his cock. He’s got that magic ‘V’ too, his damn shorts are slung so low that I can see the faintest hint of hair. He might as well take them off.

“I’m going to shower, you enjoy breakfast.”

I can’t help it, I let out a groan at the thought of him, completely naked, in the shower.

  Fuck me.

“I heard that,” he growls before the bathroom door clicks shut behind him.

  Right.

I should eat and get out of here before he is done. I need to go change and… I look at the clock… meet Cooper in an hour. I’m not sure I even want to know what happened last night. Thinking back, things get a little blurry after I stepped off the elevator and handed my best friend’s room key to Rhys. Or BD, short for baby daddy, as I like to call him.

I’m still in my black cocktail dress, so I’m going to hope nothing went down. I would most certainly want to remember a night with this man.

Focus! I scold myself and take a drink of the coffee Dylan had delivered. It tastes like heaven.

And I really need to pee. Now that I’m almost fully awake, my bladder is screaming at me. No way I’m sticking around until he’s done though, so I grab a bagel from the tray, my clutch and the cup of coffee and make a run for it.

Thankfully my hotel room is on the same floor and only a few doors down from his.

This time, my walk of shame is a short one.

  ~*~

“Hey,” Dylan reaches for my arm as I help Cooper pack up.

The photo shoot was fantastic. I can barely look Dylan in the eyes right now, but it went well. He looked fucking ah-mazing, and the model Cooper picked to be his male counterpart for the threesome cover, almost paled in comparison. Ridiculous. The other guy is truly attractive in his own right. It seems my brain and body only noticed Dylan though.

Bless the woman who got to be sandwiched between the two of them.

“What’s up?” I try to play it cool.

“Dinner? We can invite KJ and Rhys. Hang out for a bit.” He gives me a boyish smirk which weakens any resolve I thought I may have had.

  “Uhm, okay? I guess.”

“You owe me one blondie,” he says as he reaches out and twirls a strand of my hair that has fallen free, sending a shiver down my spine.

“I owe you one? For what?” I squeak.

“For passing out on me last night.” He winks, his piercing blue eyes twinkle with mischief.

Yeah, I probably should have known he wasn’t going to let me live that down.

“I’m guessing you didn’t take advantage of me then,” I tease.

Dylan puts both his hands on my shoulders, looking me right in the eyes. “I never have and never will take advantage of anyone. Period. Anything I do to your body, you’ll be a willing participant. We clear?” His voice is husky and firm.

  “I didn’t mean…it was a joke,” I fumble with my words.

“I know. I’m letting you know how this works though.”

When he gives me a cocky wink, it’s all I can do to form two simple words, “Got it.”

“Good. Now, I’m going to go make myself comfortable in your bed until you’re ready.”

Bastard. The smug look on his face makes me want to either kiss him senseless or beat him upside the head. The jury is still out on which one will happen fir
st.

  Chapter Two

  Smitty

I don’t do dinner and dates. But I’ve convinced myself that that’s not what we’re doing anyway.

We’re all friends here. Hanging out – catching up. Except, Rhys and KJ are seated across from us, lost in their own world of sexual tension while I try to break the awkwardness that’s taken up space between Zoey and I.

This isn’t me, but Zoey Daniels has had me doing things differently since the word go.

Getting to know each other for months and plotting on how to get her best friend to somehow reconnect with mine, for some insane reason that Zoey refuses to tell me – yet? I feel like things should be going a lot smoother than they are right now.

“So much for hanging out with our friends,” she mumbles and takes another drink of her sweet tea. The faint hint of jealousy lingers in her words.

“Seems like Rhys has her pretty well occupied.” I laugh as my friend and partner torments his girl more. “You could be a little more friendly to your company,” I poke.

“Fuck you. This was your idea anyway,” she snaps back and my dick twitches.

Leaning in I growl in her ear, “I had every intention of fucking you, you’re the one who passed out on me.”

Her face flushes, and she squirms in her seat. “I don’t even like you.”

“I think we already established that’s a lie.” I reach for a lock of blonde hair that’s fallen over her shoulder and twirl it around my fingers. “You wouldn’t have kept texting me all this time if you didn’t at least like me, blondie.”

When she continues to ignore me, I try to change tactics.

“How was the signing yesterday?” I won’t lie, I checked things out myself to kill some time and harass Rhys a little bit. I noticed Zoey’s table always had a crowd, and she didn’t just attract the ladies either. At least one male fan seemed to be enthralled with her, not that she seemed to be aware. No, Zoey seemed genuinely excited to interact with everyone; greeting them all with a smile, perhaps a hug, and acting as if they were all old friends.

I enjoyed getting to see her in action.
