Robert Jenkins (fl. 1731–38) appeared before Parliament in 1738 and testified that while sailing on the high seas from Jamaica to London, he was boarded by a Spanish garda-costa who seized his cargo, lashed him to the mast and tortured him by tearing off his ear.
