“He says I’m one of the few people he knows for sure will always do the right thing for the right reasons.” Erron sounded very adult and very proud. “That’s not why I’m calling.”
“Then?”
“The Captain would like to see you, sir,” Erron said.
Marlow clamped her jaw together. “I’m on my way,” she said stiffly.

She had only ever been in the Captain’s office once before, when she was appointed lieutenant of the civil division. She had been nervous and worried that at any second, David Sekar would tell her it was all a joke, the job wasn’t really hers after all.
It didn’t feel any more comfortable today, either. She stayed on her feet and at stiff attention. “Captain?”
Jonah shut the door behind her, then held out a wrapped parcel. There was a ribbon on top, gay and mocking.
“What’s this?” she asked, startled.
“Open it.” Despite the gift and the ribbon, his expression was sober. There was no twinkle of amusement in his eyes, like she remembered. She hadn’t seen him laugh or smile very much since he had taken office. Tiredness was etched into his face, too.
Curiously, she opened the gift. It was a framed printout of a chart.
She stared at it, confused.
Jonah touched the frame. “For weeks now, I have had the institutions measuring nearly two dozen critical life functions and resources on the ship. Water, food, oxygen. Civil unrest. A lot more that the sociologists insisted were critical to the longevity of the ship. Some of them are things I never thought of before, including how many times people complained about their neighbors on the Forum.”
“That’s critical?”
“Apparently. Too much means a general trend toward discontent. Too little means people feel oppressed and can’t speak out. There is a just-right level of social conflict.”
“I didn’t know that,” she murmured, looking at the chart. “This is a measure of those factors?”
Jonah nodded. “It’s a cumulative measure. Look.” He traced the red line.
“It’s going up,” she breathed, delighted. “Jonah, you did it!”
He shook his head and took the frame away from her. “We did it. Everyone on the ship did it and I’m going to make sure they all understand that. Later.” He drew her toward him, his hand around hers. “Now everyone can breathe a bit more freely. We’ve turned a corner. We can start to think of other things now.”
Her heart squeezed. She looked up at him as his arm pressed up against her back. “Did you think I minded that you put the ship first?” she whispered.
“I minded,” he growled. “I want you in my life. I want you to live with me. Erron can, too, if he wants, as long as you are there.”
She started to tremble. “We’ll both be so busy….”
Jonah shook his head. “No. We’ll make time. We’ve saved the ship. You are my priority, now.”
“In that case, you’d better kiss me, or I’ll just have to make you.”
Jonah smiled. “Ah…you’re good for my ego, Marlow, my love.”
He kissed her.
