Ruhayma: 9-year-old Caliphate slave of Dharmal’s bandits.
Ruth: Merchant from Ashvaria in Freehold, captured by bandits. Becomes the teacher of the village children in Mousehole and marries Theodule.
Sajãh: from the Caliphate, chief domestic of the bandit village of Mousehole, marries Norbert Black as his second wife.
Sanjeev Dahl: Subadar (junior officer) of cavalry at Garthang Keep, Rani’s escort commander on the way north.
Shilpa: Havenite trader captured by the bandits and kept as a slave in Mousehole.
Sparetha: mother of Hulagu, master horsewoman and trainer, fletcher, very skilled archer. Her mother is ‘from the east’ and was a thrall.
Stefan: A young soldier from Evilhalt. He is sick of seeing the world pass through his village and instead he wants to pass through the world. From a craft background (leatherworker) he has an inherited magical sword called Smiter.
Svein: man of Wolfneck, suitor to Astrid. He is an ugly (kharlish appearance), violent drunkard and around 40 years old. He owns a ship and is a rival of Astrid’s father. He is most likely the Northern agent for the Masters.
Theodora: Great-great-granddaughter of Hrothnog. She is not entirely human, a mage and, at 120 years, is far older than the late teens that she appears to be. She is also experienced (and is usually disguised as) heavy cavalry, a kataphractoi. She uses, as an alias ‘Salimah al Sabah’. Her horse is called Esther. She falls in love with, and marries, Rani.
Thord: A shorter and broad humanoid of the species locally known as a Dwarf. He comes from Kharlsbane in the Northern Mountains. He rides a sheep called Hillstrider.
Thorkil: an outlaw from Wolfneck in Dharmal’s brigand group. His hands, although usable, are more like bear claws. He is a paedophile.
Togotak: father of Hulagu, master horseman, married to Sparetha. He is a better rider than her.
Tosti: father of Astrid. A shipowner and widower.
Valeria: 16-year-old from Deeryas on the south coast, bandit slave in Mousehole and farmer. She becomes the maidservant to Rani and Theodora.
Verily I Rejoice in the Lord Tiller (Verily): A former Brotherhood slave and, since the age of six, a slave of the bandits of Mousehole. She is now 16 and traumatised. Among her other skills, she is a talented entertainer and skilled linguist. She can ‘smell’ magic and becomes an apprentice mage and then marries Aziz. She has long eyelashes, pale skin and black hair and a very smooth and sexy contralto voice. She has no hair on her body naturally.
