“Remember as I get to be an old man, we’d better go a bit slower. Otherwise, you may be explaining to the police how I managed to die in bed.”
She raised herself up against his chest. “You’d better not.” She glanced at his ring. “It will keep you safe even from me.”
“That’s what I wanted to tell you.” He pushed himself into a sitting position and cuddled her against him.
“I got separated from my men. It’s a long story, but I realized the bad guys were between them and me. I thought they’d spotted me. But I happened to glance at my ring. I swear, the stones were glowing. I positioned the ring’s stones so they shone on a distant spot. It caught my enemies’ eyes, and they turned in that direction instead of toward me. I managed to circle and join the team.”
Vi started at him in awe. “Wow. The jeweler was telling the truth. It really did keep you safe.”
“It was probably just a coincidence, but it saved my life.” He shrugged. “There are happenings that we can’t explain. I’m going to choose to believe in the ring. But don’t dare tell the other wives, or they’ll tell their husbands and the team will tease me forever.”
She snuggled closer to him. “It’ll be our secret.”
Hawke closed his eyes for a minute, and when he opened them and glanced down at Vi, she was asleep. A surge of love filled his heart. He had no doubt they were meant to be together, forever. One day he’d tell her that he hadn’t really saved her. She’d saved him.

There were detours in her life for marriage, children, and going back to college. But, she continued to be an avid reader and dream of the day she’d have a book published. Once her children were grown and she had time to write, she joined a writer’s group and her dreams of writing and publishing came true.
