She closed the door to the spare room behind her and leaned against it. The room had stopped spinning but she still felt like she had jumped out of the plane and was drifting down on the parachute. This time, she didn’t mind not being in control.

Deciding it was time for a drink, she made her way over to one of the bartenders. “Vodka tonic,” she said, deciding she needed the bracing hit of the hard stuff instead of the champagne.

“The same,” a gruff voice said behind her.

Turning around, she saw it was Donovan St. John. He was staring down at her intently. She ran a casual hand over her hair. Did she look like she had just been fucking her brains out? “St. John.” She nodded at him, deciding that she didn’t care if she did.

“Happy birthday,” he said, handing her one of the vodka tonics that the bartender had just made.

“Thank you.” She sipped her drink and was confused when he didn’t move off.

  “Where’s your date?”

“He’s making a phone call,” Dora lied, easily. “Why?”

“I don’t remember seeing you with him before.”

Dora thought that was odd. She didn’t think he would notice anything about her. But the relief that Donovan didn’t recognize Tommy made her knees shaky and she sat down in one of the stuffed chairs by the bar.

  “We’re relatively new,” she said.

  “Doesn’t seem like your type.”

“And what’s my type?” Dora smirked.

“Me.” To her astonishment, he leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Call me if things don’t work out between the two of you.” He left her there as she stared after him in shock.

Tommy found her still gaping at the space Donovan had occupied.

“You okay?” Tommy pulled her to her feet and into another warm, passionate kiss.

“This is the best birthday ever.”
