Lance is the prick ex-fiancé who practically left Saine at the altar?
When Saine lay in my arms the first night I took her to my place and told me the whole sordid story of her ex and her cousin, she never mentioned Lance’s name and I never asked. I guess I should have. I would have been waiting at his house and he would have gotten the ass kicking he deserves minus the fucking yacht.
Now things make sense.
Why Will thought I already knew.
Why Lance is distanced from the day-to-day operations of the club.
Why he’s never fucking around.
Why Will’s muscles lock every time he is.
“Are you kidding me?” I ask Lance. I’m stupefied. I don’t know the woman he married, but with one look I can tell she’s nowhere near the woman Saine is. “You left that incredible woman out there for her?”
Alicia gasps as if she’s affronted, but Lance just blinks, his jaw set, eyes stone hard. “You should watch it, Montgomery. That’s my wife you’re talking about.”
“And that’s the love of my life you two fucked over.” I move into him until our chests touch and our eyes have to strain to focus on each other. “I guess I should be thanking you but all I want to do right now is level you, so you best leave. Now. And I don’t want you in the same vicinity as Saine, or me, or next time there won’t be a warning.”
Relation is relation. Saine will always be tied to Alicia through blood, so by design that means she’ll be tied to Lance, but with one short trip to my attorney, I’ll carve him out of at least one part of her life. I’m sure we can come to some sort of mutual agreement for me to buy his share of The Revelry. Even if it costs me a fortune, which I’m sure it will, it will be worth it. Saine is worth every fucking penny I have.
Lance takes in a deep breath. His eyes narrow to thin slits and out of my periphery I watch his fists curl.
We fought once, Lance and I. In college. Over a girl, of all things. I saw her first. He wanted her anyway. We both took a beating. Fucker can punch like a pro boxer. I had two cracked ribs and a broken nose, but he didn’t fare much better. I knocked out two of his teeth, and he nearly bit his tongue in two.
For one loud tick of the clock, I think this is going to end the same way, both of us bloody. But then he takes a step back. Then another. Then, with a quick glance over my shoulder, presumably at Saine, he pivots and walks away, leaving his wife to catch up.
I’m not sure how long I stand still, trying, failing to calm the rage boiling inside me like an ocean. Tiny arms, feminine and thin, snake around me from behind and hook around my middle. I immediately calm as Saine leans her cheek against my shoulder blade.
Laying my hands over the top of hers, I whisper, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
“I figured,” she mumbles. “When you were so indignant on my behalf, I knew you didn’t know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I feel her shoulders rise and fall back down. “I didn’t want to make things awkward between you, I guess.”
My laugh is barked, sardonic. “You need to stop giving a shit what he thinks, Saine.”
“It’s not what he thinks that I give a shit about, Bennett.”
I half wonder where Will took off to, but I couldn’t care less. Leveraging my hold on her, I pull her to my front, facing me. I smooth hair away from her face, damp with the humidity of a Midwest summer. “No?”
“No,” she replies softly. “I care about what you think.”
That raises a smile, and yes, my dick twitches a little, too.
“I held onto him like a lovestruck fool, even when all the signs were there, and when I look back at my actions, I’m ashamed. It’s bad enough he left me for her but for me to agree to be in the wedding and put myself through that…” Her shoulders slump. “I was an idiot.”
“You’re not an idiot. And it’s not you I think less of, Saine. Never.”
A smile briefly crosses her lips before her eyes drop to the hollow of my throat. “Did you mean what you told him?” she asks tentatively.
“Which part?” The one where I wanted to lay him out flat, the one where I told him never to come back, or—
“That I was…” The way she pauses and licks her lips is adorable. And very fucking sexy. “…the love of your life?”
“I didn’t realize my voice carried that far,” I tease just so I can get a rise out of her.
Jackpot.
She bats at my chest, though it had oomph behind it. It smarted. She goes in again, but I grab her wrists and hold them to my chest. “What if I said yes? What would you do?”
Those doe eyes blink up at me, and shit…how is it possible to fall more in love with her than I already am? I’m not sure, but it happened.
“Are you saying yes?”
My lips head for the sky. My heart beats double time with nerves. I didn’t intend to tell her I love her in the middle of her brother’s celebration, two weeks into our relationship, but now that it’s out there, I’m not denying it either. I’m tired of denying anything when it comes to her.
“Yes.”
Her smile is slow to come, but it does. She brings her arms up to wind them around my neck. “Then I’d say I’m listening.”
I curl my hands around her back and press her flat to me, drawing her as close to me as humanly possible without being inside of her wet heat. “Is that all you’d say?”
Her hesitation lasts only a beat. “No.”
I smirk. “What else would you say?”
She fingers a piece of hair curling around my ear, gaze trained on the methodical action. “I’d say I’m glad I said yes.” Her eyes travel back to mine and go soft. “I’d say my broken heart led me to you and that I’m sorry I left you the way I did. I’d say…that I think it’s possible I fell in love with you that night but wasn’t ready to acknowledge it or deal with it yet.”
“I lied that night,” I confess. The happiness she had on her face fades a bit.
“About?”
My lips find her forehead briefly. “I told you that your future hadn’t arrived yet, but it had.” Then it’s back. That brilliant, mind-bending look in her eyes I fell into the first time. “I am your future, Saine Campbell. I was then. I am now.”
“I know,” she breathes. Shaking her head, she laughs a little and adds, “This is crazy.”
“Agreed. But a good crazy.”
“A good crazy. I know it’s so soon, but—”
“It’s not so soon,” I interrupt, taking her face between my palms. “I love you, Saine. I’ve loved you since the moment I laid eyes on you.”
She wouldn’t need to say a word and I’d know. Yet she takes the scary plunge with me. “I love you, too, Bennett.”
I want to weep in joy. I want to pound my chest, throw her over my shoulder and take her to the closest bedroom so I can make love to her for hours.
Before I know it, I have her in the air, and her tiny fists are beating against my lower back as I carry her through the backyard toward my car. Everyone else is whooping and cheering me on, especially Will and Ian, but not Saine. She has to make everything difficult.
“What are you doing? Put me down, you caveman,” she hollers. Her knee connects with my solid middle. I barely feel it, but I reach up and give her ass a quick pinch anyway. She squeals.
“You’re going to miss dinner,” Will yells as I open the gate.
“Oh, trust me, I’ll be eating high on the hog tonight.”
“Ewww,” Will groans at the same time Saine screeches, “You did not just say that!”
“Just stating the obvious.”
That earns me a kidney punch.
When I get to my Rover, I pop the locks and set Saine on her feet, quickly pressing her between the cool steel and my warm body. It’s more of a protective effort, but having her curves forced against me is a nice bonus.
“What the hell has gotten into you?”
The air rushes from her lungs when I twist my hips,
pushing my erection into her stomach. “You, Saine Campbell. You have gotten into me. Into my head, my heart, my very fucking soul. And if it’s all right with you, I’m going to take the woman I love home and make love to her all night long.”
Those electric blue eyes of hers widen. Her pupils begin to dilate. Her chest moves faster. Guess that means she’s on board with this change in plans.
“Will there be champagne involved?”
I laugh and capture her lips with mine, hungry and wanting. The second she’s melting against me I break free and whisper in her ear, “It’s already chilling, Ms. Campbell.”
“That’s all you had to say, Mr. Montgomery.”
Her reply is husky, an invitation, a supplication that mirrors the powerful need we had for each other on night one, only this time it’s much deeper. Meaningful.
Forever.
