Elites: The Supers of Project 12 Page 18

by Angel Lawson

They knock twice on the metal door, the sound echoing down the alley. A man opens it, his face awash in light. Her fingers grip the edge of the rooftop, steadying herself. She knows that face. The man.

He’s the one that introduced Demetria at the Gala. She has a thought…could this be her mentor? The one that led her down this road of self-destruction?

The door slams and any answers are locked behind it.

She’s unsure how long she stares at the building below, coming up with a dozen plans for getting inside. They include everything from knocking to blowing down the door. None seem right. All are terrifying.

“Find something?” a voice behind her asks. Quinn and Owen stand a few feet away. She didn’t hear them she was so caught up in her thoughts.

“Nah, just a few rubberneckers.” She hops down and brushes her hands together. “You guys ready?”

They walk back to the front of the building. The beer sign lights the roof along with the flashing blue and red of the police cars. The city sprawls in the distance, the harbor and the University. All fingertips away from The Swamp.

Quinn wraps his arm around her waist and she bumps shoulders with Owen. He’d been right when he said there were more bad guys out there. People working with Demetria. Working for her. Not to mention whoever it is killing the mentors.

“You think this is going to work?” Her question could mean a million things. It does mean a million things.

His eyes connect to hers, blue and full of life. It’s a lifetime away from how they first met—the pain of losing both their mentors. The fear of starting a new life. Now they have each other. And Owen and probably Casper.

“Do you think we can get Demetria back?” she asks when he doesn’t answer the first question. This one has been on her mind for days. The lack of surprise on his face tells her he’s thought about it, too.

  “We can try.”

  “Yeah?”

“I think Holden and Atticus would want us to, don’t you?”

  She nods. “Yeah, I do.”

Atticus had been wrong about one thing. Project 12 was more than the people that hurt them. More than the doctors or the program. It’s the people. The kids and survivors. They were the twelve. And now they’re the Elite.

She looks up at the billboard. “You know, maybe we should get one of these. For the gym.”

“A hot bikini girl?” Quinn asks with a smile.

“No dumbass, a billboard. Advertising Elite. Maybe try to bring in a few more people from this side of town.”

“Brains, beauty, and brawn,” Owen says. “I like it.”

“Yeah, you remember that after our first training session tomorrow,” she says, looping a finger where his knives should be.

“She’s brutal,” Quinn says with a laugh. “The first time we met she almost kicked my ass.” He grins wide. “Almost.”

“The first time we met you almost killed me with an electrical charge!”

  “You’re immune. It didn’t hurt.”

  “You didn’t know that!”

“Jesus,” Owen barks. “Is this what it’s going to be like?”

They both grin sheepishly, because yeah, probably.

Astrid links arms with both of them and they stay on the roof a little bit longer and watch the sun rise over Crescent City, a place that has no idea it needs protecting, but has a hell of a team watching over it anyway.

  Author’s Note

  Readers!

Thank you for joining me on this epic ride. I’ve wanted to write a superhero book for a long time and the world of reverse harem + the Elites was born. I want to drop a quick thanks to my beta readers Jennifer & Eveis. My editor Vanessa and my cover designer AngstyG. I need to say thanks to the amazing group in Angel’s Antics (Formerly Raven Queen’s Harem Reader Group) for supporting me so awesomely and talking to me about Riverdale and whatever nonsense comes to mind. I need to thank Lisa and Ava for listening to me drone on and on and on about this book and all my worries about not getting it right. You guys are all the best and make my little quiet world of writing a little less lonely.

  Thanks!

  Angel

P.S. Just before this published my 20 year old cat, Anita Baker passed away. She was my inspiration for Harry Styles. Old, cranky, lover of cheese and the boss of everything. It felt right to make a little note here. I’m going to miss her and I’m glad I got the chance to immortalize her in one of my books.
