  Chapter One

Aubrey Maxwell stood behind the large column near the bar, hoping she couldn’t be seen. It wasn’t usual for her to hide when she was at Consensual, the BDSM club owned by one of her friends. Normally, she was talkative and friendly, enjoying the social atmosphere. After all, Sanctuary was a small town in Montana. She knew everyone in the club and they knew her. Tonight, however, was going to be different, possibly awkward. It might even get downright ugly.

The club was busy for this early on a Saturday night. She let her gaze wander over the comfortable room. The bar area was located close to the front door of the club. Many people simply came to hang out with friends, not going any deeper into the club. The bar was long with dark, polished wood and brass trim, the lighting dim in one half and brighter on the other side where patrons played pool or shot darts. The bar area was only filled tonight with people lounging on overstuffed couches and chairs made of leather. It looked completely vanilla, not giving away the secret of what lay deeper in the building.

Down the hallway and through the draped doorway was the dungeon area. Once through that gate, the world was completely different, a den of pleasure and pain. The beat of music pulsed in time with the writhing flesh. It smelled of sex, leather, and sweat. Its concrete walls and floors, the wooden bondage implements, the whips and floggers hanging from the walls beckoned to something hidden deep inside her that only Riley and Noah had been able to reach. She’d lost count of the times her men had brought her to orgasm within these rooms. Riley and Noah were a submissive’s dream come true. They knew her body like their own.

Her anger was mixed with sadness. She might never know the joy of submitting again. She’d kicked her boyfriends to the curb. She’d been in love with Riley and Noah McLean for as long as she could remember, maybe even since birth. They were incredibly good looking, sexy as hell, and damn if they didn’t know it. They were smokin’ hot, and pretty much every unattached female in Sanctuary and beyond wouldn’t mind having their boots under her bed. Up until three days ago, Riley’s and Noah’s boots had been under Aubrey’s bed.

“Hey, Aubrey. Soda?” Tom, the sometime bartender and sometime Dungeon Monitor, gave her a smile. He was a handsome man and charming. For the thousandth time she wondered why she didn’t hook up with a guy like him. He seemed the dependable type with no family baggage.

  “Yes, please. Thank you.”

Tom’s green eyes twinkled. “You’re welcome, sweetheart. All alone tonight? Where’s Riley and Noah?”

Her mouth tightened, and she accepted her drink with a small smile. “I have no idea, and I don’t care.”

  A grin spread across Tom
s face. “Really? Well, if you’re alone and unattached, I wouldn’t mind playing later. My basket has a large dark blue and red striped blanket over it. You’ll know it’s mine.” He winked. “It’s full of toys I think you’ll like.”

She nodded, determined to put her men firmly in the rearview mirror. She’d only come to Consensual by herself tonight since the owner, Aaron Carson, was having a charity auction. Normally, she’d be crying in front of the television with a couple of pints of ice cream for company. Tonight she didn’t have the luxury. Aaron was a good friend, and the auction was for a good cause. He wanted to raise money to upgrade the waiting rooms in the children’s wing of the local hospital and make it a more inviting space. Aaron’s son had been in the hospital briefly a few months before.

Aaron had discussed several possible ideas with Aubrey but hadn’t been sold on any of them. It had been Aubrey who had come up with the final idea. Each Dom would create a basket of fun toys, such as clamps, floggers, vibrators, and the like. The baskets would be auctioned off to the subs at the club. If you bought a Dom’s basket, you were his for the evening to use all the toys. It had brought in quite a bit of people. She walked down the hall and into the dungeon area. The club was packed and noisy. It should be easy to hide from Riley and Noah in this crowd.

Aubrey wandered over to where several single subs lounged on couches watching the early scenes. So far, so good. The men were nowhere to be found. Hopefully, her luck would hold up. They might not even show up tonight.

Her heart ached at the thought of her men, her Doms, playing with another sub. She knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but she wasn’t sure she was ready to see it so soon. It made it even more important for her to make sure she moved on, too. Her men sure as shit wouldn’t be crying over their split. They’d barely cared when she’d shown them the door.

She still didn’t know why a practical, no-nonsense woman such as herself turned into a mealy mouthed idiot when it came to those ornery men. She’d let them get away with too damn much crap over the years. She was tired of their partying and their family issues. Her men, or boys as she liked to refer to them, showed no signs of slowing down even though they were over thirty. They were the life of most parties. Too many of them for Aubrey’s comfort. She was sure they had never cheated on her. In a town as small as Sanctuary, she would have found out about it before they’d put their pants back on. But they’d been late for more dates than she could count. They’d spend weekend nights with their buddies while she sat at home fuming. They’d simply put her feelings dead last.

Her men were also part of the McLean family. The McLeans had been having a long-running feud with the Baldwin family since the Civil War. Aubrey was friends with both families, which put her firmly in the middle of the battle. Her men were unreasonable about the subject, and she was tired of mediating their disagreements but getting nowhere. The families had been battling for over a hundred years and would probably hate each other for a hundred more.

Wednesday night, she’d put her foot down. They were supposed to come over to her house for dinner at seven o’clock. They hadn’t made it until ten thirty. She’d already put away the leftovers and was tossing and turning in bed when they’d finally darkened her door.

She’d told them in no uncertain terms she’d had it with their cavalier attitudes regarding their relationship and their habit of placing her in the middle of their issues. Her men had protested their innocence but eventually left, only to send flowers and candy the next day. She’d refused to take their calls. Three days later she still hadn’t. She’d never gone this long without giving in before. Lord knew, she’d given in in the past, folding like the proverbial cheap tent when they’d said “pretty please.”

“Evening, Aubrey. Where are Riley and Noah?” She sighed and rolled her eyes, bringing an amused smile to Aaron’s lips. It was going to be like this for awhile, until people got used to seeing her without her boys.

“Hi, Aaron. As I told Tom, I don’t know and I don’t care. We’re through.”

Aaron didn’t look surprised. He’d seen their antics in the past and how it made her crazy. “I’m sorry to hear that. Riley and Noah are good Doms but have some growing up to do in their personal life. I’m sorry that it’s come to this, though. You’re good for them. What happened?”

“I bet I know what happened.” Aubrey looked up in surprise to see one of her best friends, Tatum Baldwin.

“Hey, I thought you weren’t coming tonight. You had papers to grade or something.”

Tatum turned a little pink. “I finished earlier than I thought I would. This is for such a good cause I didn’t think I should miss it.”

Aaron smiled. “We’re glad you could make it, Tatum. Can Tom get you a drink?”

Tatum licked her lips, and Aubrey could tell she was nervous. About what though, she had no idea.

  “Coke okay?”

Aaron nodded to Tom and turned back to Aubrey. “So, what did happen? Riley and Noah are wild, but deep down they’re good guys.”

That was the irony. They were good Doms, caring and mature. They were just sucky boyfriends. “They’re no good for me. We’ve been dating since I was in college. I’m twenty-eight. I want to settle down and have a family. How long am I supposed to be patient?” She sighed. “As for what happened? What usually happens? They showed up hours late for a date, as usual, stinking of cigars. They’d been playing poker and hanging out with friends when a couple of Baldwins came in. Your brothers, Tatum. Needless to say, a poker battle ensued between the two families. I’m so tired of this stupid feud. I don’t think they even really remember what they’re mad about.”

Tatum rolled her eyes. “I’m going to kick my brothers’ asses. Repeatedly. They sure as hell don’t even know why they hate the McLeans either.”

Aaron put his hand on Aubrey’s shoulder. “I’m not sure about that. They seem pretty vocal about every wrong done on both sides. Listen, are you okay? If you’re done, well, you’re done. They’ll either have to man up, grow up, or lose you. Seems simple enough to me. Is there anything I can do? I’m grateful you still came tonight.”

“I’m fine. This is important.” Aubrey took a deep breath and stood tall. “I know this is important to you, so it’s important to me.”

His expression was sympathetic. “Don’t feel like you have to bid on anything, okay? I would imagine playing with anyone else would be hard, if not impossible, right now.”

Tears blurred her vision, but she blinked them back. “I need to move on. Riley and Noah won’t wait, that’s for damn sure. They’ve got women queued up from here to the county line.”

“I’m not so sure about that, honey. They love you. They love you a whole hell of a lot. They’ve just never had to worry about you loving them back.”

“I’ve been too easy for them.” Aubrey snorted. “Hell, everything their entire fucking lives has been easy for them. Two rich boys having the time of their lives.”

Aaron lifted her chin so she was looking into his eyes. “No cursing, little sub. You might be one of my favorite people, but you know the rules. I don’t want to have to discipline you tonight. I don’t like to hear you speaking out of anger. You know Riley and Noah work their asses off on the ranch. They may come from a family with money, but their parents did make them work from the time they could walk.”

That made her smile. She and Aaron were good friends, almost like brother and sister. They’d never scened together before, and she knew they never would. She’d been close with his late wife, who had died in childbirth. Now, Aubrey was there to lend Aaron a hand with his young son, Tyler.

“I’m sorry, Aaron.” She looked down and tried to at least appear submissive. She didn’t really feel submissive except with her men and only during sex. She wasn’t submissive in any other part of her life.

“Forgiven.” Aaron tapped her on the nose. “I’m going to call Tyler and talk to him before the nanny puts him to bed. I’ll tell him you said sweet
dreams.”

She nodded. “Please. Tell him Auntie Aubrey loves him and I’ll be around to see him soon.”

“Tomorrow. Come over for Sunday dinner. I’ll make a roast or something. Tatum, you’re welcome, too.”

She shook her head. “I’ll have to pass. I’m expected with my parents. Are you still learning to cook?”

Aaron was learning to cook and liked to practice on unsuspecting friends. “I am. I’m getting better. Are you in, Aubrey?”

  “I’m in. I’ll bring dessert.”

He looked relieved. “Thank goodness. If the roast doesn’t turn out, we can at least have dessert.” He turned as one of the Dungeon Monitors called his name. “Tomorrow. Two o’clock.”

“Hey, boss.” Aaron’s office manager, Tina, waved to get his attention. “Just got a call from Josh and Will McLean. They won’t be able to make it tonight. Something about being needed at the ranch. We have to pull their basket.”

Aaron nodded and went behind the counter, pulling out a large basket covered with red cloth.

“This is theirs. They dropped it by earlier this week. Why don’t you put it in the back room, and they can pick it up whenever. It’s probably just as well. When I put it up for auction, I was going to give a disclaimer that they were new and inexperienced Doms. Now I don’t have to worry about that.”

“Wait!” Tatum seemed to vibrate where she stood. She’d had a crush on Josh and Will for a long time, although she’d deny it to Aubrey with her last breath. “I’ll buy it.”
