They sat together in silence for a long while. Out of the blue, Alex said, "I can't go back to that house. It was a part of my father and . . . and I just can't go back to it."
"You don't have to. You belong here . . . with me. Let that be the start of your new beginning."
The wind picked up again, whistling through the taped-up window. The tumbleweeds that had collected along the back of the house scratched at the siding with prickly feelers.
The soft scratching, which only hours before had put terror into her heart, now lulled her soothingly, like light rain pattering on a tin roof, as she snuggled closer into the arms of the man she loved.
