  Boskaheed: A renowned Curahshena commander intent on recapturing the River Cities and restoring the johalids to power.

  Hakh Halor: A long dead Johalid who once tried to unify Curahshena rule under a single leader through the conquest and murder of his own brethren.

  Johalid Kessir: The ruler of the Curahshena River City Kessira.

  Grand Johalid Manuqhid: Fallen leader of the Curahshar, ruler of the desert city Manuqhidar - The Heart of Sand. Manuqhid is stricken with the plague the Curahshar call Hesa's Crown.

  Mehijxa: A young Curahshena healer.

  Misho Melhizor: A skilled, ambitious, and deadly Curahshena warrior competing in Johalid Sidhir's khavasana.

  Mij Haladesh: An old and proud Curahshena warrior competing in Johalid Sidhir's khavasana.

  Johalid Sidhir: The ruler of the Curahshena River City Sidhira, and the loudest voice in the call for rebellion against the occupying Blood Marsh.

  Lord Alcinius Bokrham: Lord Martial of the Blood Marsh army, and ruler of the realm due to the imposition of martial law after the disappearance of Prince Kazick Mehlor.

  Lord Lale Dovorst: Husband of Minasia Melhor, a distant cousin of the Blood Marsh royal house, and member of the Blood Marsh War Council.

  Lord Edgmere: The eldest Lord on the Blood Marsh War Council. Father of Baron Edgmere.

  Baron Sarben Edgmere: The son of Lord Edgmere, obsessed with his ailing daughter Diyasa.

  Diyasa Edgmere: The daughter of Baron Edgmere, granddaughter of Lord Edgmere, afflicted with a terrible illness.

  Erwhil: A wizened old man living in the Mehlor family's island keep.

  Helster Jogan: A wealthy merchant and advisor to King Vichtor.

  Ilia Jogan: Daughter of Helster Jogan.

  Kayne: A bard living on the outskirts of Baron Edgmere's keep.

  Prince Kazick Mehlor: The son of Vichtor Mehlor and rightful heir to the Blood Marsh throne. Kazick disappears without explanation just before he is crowned King of mainland Esmoria.

  Urik Mehlor: Grandfather of Vichtor Mehlor.

  King Vichtor Mehlor: The late king of the Blood Marsh, father to Kazick, whose schemes and cunning lead to the Marshland conquest of mainland Esmoria.

  Virazil Mehlor: Younger cousin of Ulrik Mehlor.

  The Messenger: A courier of letters entrusted with an important task by the late King Vichtor Mehlor.

  Captain Shardon: A captain in the Blood Marsh army who fervently believes that the Curahshar are involved in the strange disappearance of Prince Kazick Mehlor.

  Paeter Sillcim: The young overseer of the Mehlor family's island keep.

  Thilanea: The wife of the lord of El's Meadow and advisor in intelligence to Lord Bokrham.

  Lord Tindor: A member of the Blood Marsh War Council whose lands border Curahshena territory.

  Lord Zephor: A member of the Blood Marsh War Council, whose lands border Mountain territory.

  The Silver Mountains

  The Campmaster: The overseer of the Black Crest Silver Mine Camp, a forced labor camp in a remote corner of the Silver Mountains still under control of Tobin Stonelord.

  Jeina Dhaenswin: A young silver seeker forced to work at a remote mountain prison camp after she is caught stealing in the Iron City.

  Fezi: A bedraggled outcast clinging to existence in a decaying village in the Silver Mountains.

  Laiti: A young worker in the same forced labor camp as Jeina. Laiti is one of the first to confirm Jeina's sightings of the gröljum.

  Lohidim: A long dead human scribe who attempted to bend the gröljum to his will.

  Isic Magmar: An ancient smith who possesses the arcane knowledge and long-forgotten arts to subdue and bend the gröljum to the will of humans.

  Unerr Redseed: A bean courier.

  Prince Eathor Stonelord: The elder prince of the Silver Mountains who agrees to be taken prisoner to save his people from famine and sickness.

  Prince Tobin Stonelord: The younger prince of the Silver Mountains whose rebel forces continue to harass the invading Marshland army even after his mother, Tila Stonelord, surrenders and abdicates the mountain throne.

  Queen Tila Stonelord: Mother of Tobin and Eathor Stonelord, who abdicates her throne to save her people from famine and sickness.

  Church Lands

  Eloma Beseux: A wealthy merchant's wife in Widow's Harbor whose son, Ansen, has been stung by a jellyfish.

  Nicolas Corriver: A young engraver's apprentice afflicted with a seizure disorder that threatens to ruin his life.

  Master Gleydon: The master engraver on Creko's Isle to whom Nicolas Corriver is apprenticed.

  Alpadri Korus: A high-priest in the Church of Rekon.

  Sir Relusz Mavonin: A swashbuckling disenfranchised Bloodknight working for Baron Edgmere.

  Rujo: A young orphan, apprenticed to the Monks in Brightshore on Creko's Isle.

  Sister Stacy: The proprietor of the House of Hope, a charitable establishment in Brightshore.

  The Sumpadri: The leader of the Church of Rekon.

  Terun Lodinos: A prophet of Rekon, who disappeared into Midnight Lake when chased by the hounds of the Traitor-King Borelian.
