Wasteland Wonderland: Part 2 Page 10

by J. L. Harden

My vision finally comes into focus. I sit up slowly this time. Carefully.

  I take a look around.

On the walls are racks of guns. So many. Countless.

I’ve never seen so many guns.

  All kinds.

  Rifles.

  Automatic.

  Semi-automatic.

  Sniper rifles.

  Hand guns.

  Shotguns.

  Machine guns.

Guns I have never seen before…

Boxes and boxes and crates of ammunition.

  Grenades.

  Rocket launchers.

  Land mines.

  Thermo suits.

This entire room is a war chest, a weapons cache worth a hundred, no, a thousand fortunes. Enough to last a thousand lifetimes. Enough to buy your way on to one of the Arks. To live amongst the stars.

This is a war chest. Below a morgue.

“Edgar has convinced me to join the revolution,” Max says. “To stand up to Wonderland and the Collector and the so called… Lord. I am not much of a fighter, not much of a soldier, but I have spent a lifetime accumulating and building this arsenal for a day just like today.”

These words are treasonous. Enough to get us killed. But who cares? We’ve all got a death sentence on our heads. We’ve all got a target on our backs. We are beyond the point of no return.

I look to the ceiling and I can’t shake the feeling that we are literally surrounded by dead bodies and buried by dead bodies. I don’t know whether to take this as a good sign or not.

  But Max is smiling.

  And Angel is smiling.

Ed is all business. And he says, “Zoe, we are going to war. Prepare yourself.”
