“Merek, please listen to me! You are in the Dragon Kingdom! Maelyss isn’t the man that King Athalos has described to you all these years. It seems to be the fact that he had made his own impression for him. Maybe it was out of fear or maybe it was to scare people, either way that isn’t who Maelyss is.”
“You are finally awake.” The traveler said who I met at Marvin’s pub and had followed me on and off throughout the journey.
“Yes, I am finally awake. I guess I fell quite ill. At least we didn’t have to sleep together in the same room. I think it was you that told me that it was like sleeping with a dragon.”
The man started laughing. “Yes, I did say that. I felt incredibly bad that you couldn’t control any of your powers. You kept flip-flopping between human and dragon.”
I nodded. “Perhaps if I knew how to be a dragon then this whole quest wouldn’t have taken so long and Maelyss won’t even think about hanging me from my toes.”
Maelyss spun and looked at Ryia. “You told him that?” he asked, horrified.
Ryia shrugged with amusement.
He looked back at me and stared. “You aren’t even thinking about what I am telling you or trying to tell you! I am Maelyss. Ever since the rumors of you being a dragon surfaced, I made my way in a human form to figure out what it was that you were after. Straight from the castle, you seemed upset by this quest. You were to kill Maelyss, the King of Dragons if you ever wanted to be part of the kingdom again.” Maelyss pointed out.
I stood looking horrified as the man who had followed seemed to be my father.
“I still can’t believe that you are my father. You have followed me throughout this. You seemed to always put in your own advice, but never did I think that you were my father. Did you love our mother or did you take her prisoner?”
“I loved Bethany more than ever. She was the most beautiful woman I ever set my eyes on it wasn’t for the fact that I had kidnapped her at all. She was supposed to be my wife before King Athalos had forced her into marrying him, by then you were already on your way.
We had discussed if she was going to ship you off to live with me or not. I thought that living with your mother was more important than you knowing you were a dragon back then. As time unfolded, Bethany gave birth to two more sons that were King Athalos. This wasn’t her choice she always told me that she was afraid once she found out about you that he would have you killed even as a child. He seemed determined all the time to kill the dragons. When Bethany came here to tell me this, we rekindled what we had and Rowan seemed to be the results of that.”
“Why did King Athalos lie for so many years about it?”
“The prophecy was instilled in him that this was the way he was going to die well before he was even born. His family was a very war hungry family. I am sure you already know that. When he did figure out that you were both dragons, he sent you on a deadly quest. You weren’t supposed to live throughout.”
I shook my head. “What about the war? I am sure King Athalos will start a war if he knows we survived any of this stuff including the quest.” I pointed out.
“The war between King Athalos and the dragons has already started and that has nothing to do with you. It all stemmed back with me. There is a lot more to the dragons you don’t understand.”
Right in front of me a new chapter of history was being written. The stranger who I thought was just a traveler was my father. He seemed to try to protect me the best he could.
“Merek, there is one more thing I need to talk to you about,” Ryia said.
My eyes glanced over at her. “Go ahead and tell me what is on your mind.”
“We are expecting a baby.”
Was it true that the prophecy was about to finally begin? The war had begun and my wife was expecting our first child.
