For a long moment there was silence. Then from somewhere outside someone struck up a sweet sad song on a violin.

“I guess someone else can’t sleep,” murmured Cassandra.

“And a good thing too,” said Taleon, leading her into a soft slow dance.

Cassandra laughed and then sobered, following his lead. “I missed the celebration, didn’t I?”

Taleon sighed with the remembrance of his heavy heart. “It wasn’t much of a celebration. I was a newly crowned prince and my rightful dance partner was nowhere to be found. In consequence, no one else could fill your place.”

Cassandra laid her head against him. “I missed you more than words can say.”

Taleon stopped, and, taking her face in his hands, asked. “Do you know you are beautiful?”

Cassandra blushed under his compliment and looked shyly up at him.

He stepped back into the rhythm of the dance again, whispering in her ear, “It’s true.”

She buried her face against his doublet.

When the music stopped, they drew their dance to a close.

“You need to get some rest now,” Taleon said softly. Taking her hand, he kissed it.

  “Goodnight, Taleon.”

“Until the morning,” he whispered with a smile.

Cassandra smiled. The morning would be sweet.
