Putting on my favorite white panties and matching bra with a little heart hanging low, I step into the brown dress with the leather belt around the waist. The cleavage is perfect for the necklace I plan on wearing his wedding ring around my neck, visible to him. The seam of the dress has flowers, the length is about twenty inches above the knees and the fabric will allow me to sweat on stage without the fear of it showing. I’m so nervous.
A brown cowboy hat will go great with the dress and the brown heels that he has bought me; they are still my favorite heels.
My hair is layered perfectly with some curls and makeup is light. He knows I’m not big on makeup; it’s very rare I wear red lipsticks, but today a little might suffice.
Ready to go to the Country Bar where we’re meeting since I’m going to go with Sarah and meet him there. I came up with some bogus lie as to why I had to go with Sarah; he seemed just fine with it.
“You got the ring, right?” Sarah asks me as we drive to the bar.
“Yep, around my neck.”
“And you know how you’re going to do it?”
“Sure do. I will sing a song by Echosmith and let the lyrics inspire him. And then I’ll propose after the song. Question is, do I get down on one knee?”
“I don’t know, I guess you could. Or just go with what feels right at the moment. I’m so excited, Theresa,” she says as we start to pull into the parking lot of bar.
And I’m starting to be a nervous wreck.
It seems we’re the last to get to the bar. Ryan and Kristina are in the car with me, and I’ve done nothing but talk their ear off with my plans. Pretty sure they are ready to get out of the car.
Ryan pats me on the shoulder, “you ready?”
“Sure am,” I say jumping out of the car. “I’m going to ask the love of my life to be the rest of my life.”
“Slow down lover boy, what if she says no?” Kristina busts my bubble.
“Kristina Sanders, don’t say that,” I hear Ryan say.
“You boys are so easy to mess with, I’m going in to find Addison.”
“Women! Here is the ring you picked out, I picked it up this morning, put it in your pocket,” Ryan hands me the ring.
I picked an infinity twist 14K white gold engagement ring with a Micropavé diamond. The diamond to solidify the diamond she is to me, and the infinity to prove our forever love.
I can’t wait to see the expression on her face.
Ryan smacks me on the shoulder, “come on man, I need a beer.” We walk into the bar and I already see Theresa mingling with Addison and Brandon.
Once I get to the table, she wraps her hands around my shoulder and kisses me. She seems a bit different, but I’m going to blame the hormones for that.
“I’d like you to officially meet Sarah,” we shake hands and smile at each other, “Nice to meet you, Sarah. Heard a lot about you.”
“Oh so have I. I’m glad it all worked out though,” she states as she winks at Theresa.
“I ordered you a beer,” Theresa says as she hands me a bottle of Miller Lite. Not my favorite choice, but that’s ok, it’s the thought that counts, I don’t plan on drinking a whole lot besides water anyways.
We sit down at the tables and wait for the karaoke to start. I’m anxious to get on with it. And Theresa seems to be a bit fidgety as well.
The announcer of the bar comes on stage and welcomes all guests to a special night. I’m not sure what he means by the special night but I’m hoping he’s not going to give away my idea that I ran by him.
“So tonight we’re going to start out with something totally new and different, I ask Michael Walker and Theresa Leighton to come on stage please.”
We both look at each other, I would love to know what she’s thinking right now, but her face shows no surprise, it’s like she was expecting this. I definitely hope none of my friends gave any of it away, but I highly doubt that.
Once we get on stage, we both smile at each other with the microphones in our hands. It’s a magical moment and I’m trying to enjoy every second of it.
“Today, we’re going to do something different, these two youngsters have each picked a song they wanted to sing tonight, and I’d like to mash those songs up, each time you hear your instrumental part, you sing your song, back and forth. Do you understand?” the announcer asks us and we both look at each other confused. This wasn’t part of my plan so I’m not sure what he has planned. I hope he didn’t forget what I had originally asked for.
Theresa and I both nod and prepare ourselves for what’s to come. I give her a small kiss and the crowd cheers us on. I’m ready. Not sure what song she chose to go with mine, but I hope she pays attention to my words. They will mean something. Ready. Set. Go.
I’m not really sure what’s going on. I wanted to sing a song to propose to Michael and now the announcer is making us sing our songs together in a mashup. How in the world is he supposed to hear the words I sing to him? This is not at all how I had it planned and I’m a little upset that he changed things up compared to what I asked.
But looking at how sexy Michael is in his brown khaki shorts and a button up white shirt with the top 2 buttons loose and some hair showing, I can’t be too mad. He’s sexy as fuck. I can’t wait to make him mine, or attempt to ask him. That’s if this turns out well in the end.
Michael starts his song.
You're a falling star, You're the getaway car.
You're the line in the sand when I go too far.
You're the swimming pool, on an August day.
And you're the perfect thing to say.
It’s one of my favorite Michael Buble songs; in fact, I could listen to it over and over. And the words are just incredible. He sings the words to me, winking and smiling the entire time. It’s like he’s singing these words just to me and no one else. And then it turns into being my turn.
I think the universe is on my side
Heaven and Earth have finally aligned
Days are good and that’s the way it should be
You sprinkle star dust on my pillow case
It's like a mooning brushed across my face
nights are good and thats the way it should be
I’m singing the words right to him, serenading him the way he just did me. It’s all very intimate. The words hitting us both at the same time. Magical, if you will.
Michael gets back to singing .
And you play it coy, but it's kinda cute.
Ah, when you smile at me you know exactly what you do.
Baby don't pretend, that you don't know it's true.
Cause you can see it when I look at you.
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It's you, it's you, you make me sing.
You're every line, you're every word, you're everything.
The words are perfect for me, making me curious as to why he chose this song. Every word describes our relationship in some way.
My turn.
Did you see that shooting star tonight?
Were you dazzled by the same constellation?
Did you and Jupiter conspire to get me?
I think you and the Moon and Neptune got it right
'Cause now I'm shining bright, so bright
Bright, so bright
If I didn’t know any better, it seemed we both tried to tell each other something.
I’m not really sure why, but her words are hitting me, it feels like she’s singing them to me personally. And I’ve blocked everyone out that’s been clapping and cheering us on.
After our song, the announcer stops us before either of us moves or says anything.
“This is the moment, for the special surprise,” that’s my queue. He had mentioned on the phone, once it was time to propose, to get down on my knees and go for it. Once I’m digging out the ring box of my pocket, I notice Theresa fidgeting as well. I pull it out and in that exact same moment, not wasting any seconds, I drop to my knees. But not just that is
shocking factor for the crowd, I see Theresa do the exact same thing. What the hell? Is she mocking me? Curious I raise my eyebrow at her as does she me. We both stare at each other for a moment, when he interrupts us and makes a small speech, leaving us on the floor, on our knees.
“I received two phone calls this past week, these two wonderful singers wanted to do something special for their significant others. I had agreed to go along with both of their plans, neither of them knowing the other had called. Now, you see them kneeled before each other trying to decide who will be the first to,” and looks at both of us to continue his sentence. I beat Theresa to the punch and scream out very fast, “Will you marry me?” Shocked she looks at me but doesn’t answer. Instead she blurts out really loud, “Will you marry me?” and pulls out a ring for me at the same time I pull out hers.
I can’t believe it and am in shock. Our friends and family are clapping and bouncing in their seats, taking pictures. I wonder if they were in on it or are just as surprised. We both get off our knees and hug and kiss each other like crazy, ignoring the world before us.
“I never heard an answer, did you guys?” the announcer screams into the microphone. They all scream no and I pick up Theresa and scream at the top of my lungs into the microphone, “YES, YES, YES!” she giggles, pulls the microphone out of my hands, since she’s already dropped hers, and screams, “ I say YES, YES, YES, too!”
We kiss long and hard with a bottle of champagne being popped on stage covering us in drops. I put the ring on her finger, as she puts the ring she got me on my finger.
“We are engaged,” I scream as I shake her around.
“You can put me down now, Michael.”
“Oh, my bad,” I stick my tongue out at her.
“You totally stole my thunder,” she leans in and kisses me.
“No darling, you stole mine. I can’t believe we had the same plan for the same night, and on top of that, to sing to each other. “
“Well, I thought this was a great idea since I made you come to karaoke night and you seemed to like it, it has turned into one of our things,” she giggles.
Brandon and the crew came over to us, “So, when’s the date?” and Addison smacks him, “they just got engaged babe, give them time,” she chimes in.
Theresa is laughing, “I think we’ll figure that out later on, right now I just wanted to make sure to make him mine.”
Kristina and her wise words, “So what’s the story years down the road, who proposed to whom?” and we all laugh at her.
“That’s easy, it was me. I sang first.” I throw out there as I grab a hold of Theresa’s hips, she moves out of my hold and puts her hand up, “hold up there, that is undecided since we had no choice in that matter.”
I guess she’s right. There’s no way of telling who proposed to whom, I think this is the funniest story to tell our kids one day. Well children, mom and dad were never traditional, in anything we’ve done. So we decided to both get on our knees and propose to each other.
I’m still shocked by the fact we both got this far, this fast, and I can’t believe we thought the same thoughts and wanted the exact same thing. We are definitely meant to be together.
I love this man and we are perfect together all because of the same thoughts. We are in sync in all the right ways. We’re going to have twins in a few months, we’ll be getting married, and things will change drastically, and as for me, I couldn’t be more excited. All those worries and timid thoughts have vanished and I’m thrilled to see what’s to come next.
After we celebrated with all our friends at the karaoke bar, we went back to Michaels place. I guess I should start calling it my place too. I am eager to get moved in and settled just so I could start relaxing. It won’t be long until I start having a belly from hell. And I’m going to take advantage of Michael spoiling me.
Mrs. Walker, I like the sound of that.
A few weeks have passed and we were finally able to get all of Theresa’s things moved into my house, I mean our house. We are engaged and I couldn’t be happier.
“I have to sit down a bit,” Theresa says as she finishes the last box in the kitchen of the dishes she brought.
“Do you need anything?” I ask her as I bring her a cup of water to the couch.
“No, I’m ok. I’m just tired.”
“Lay down and take a nap, I’ll take care of the rest,”
“There’s something I need to talk to you about, Michael.”
When she starts sentences like that, there’s a part of me inside that still gets paranoid. It’s like a rollercoaster ride, she mentions needing to talk and I feel the coaster heading down, in this case my heart plummets.
“About?” I sit down next to her.
“The wedding,” she says.
Whew. That’s something I can handle. Anything we discuss can and will be compromised. We haven’t really sat down to figure out dates, we wanted to let it all sink in first, the engagement and the way it happened. We still talk about it so much and laugh. Incredible we both had the same idea.
“Second thoughts?” I ask her carefully
“Oh god no, never. I was thinking I wanted to do it after the twins were born. This is going to sound absurd, but I wanted them to celebrate with us since they brought us back together,” she exclaims looking down.
“Baby, that doesn’t sound absurd at all. I actually like that idea.”
“Really Michael? Oh my god, I was worried you were going to say no and say you wanted to do it sooner than later,” she says excitedly.
“As much as I’d love to marry you like yesterday, I understand and like that idea very much,”
“Plus I won’t be fat in a wedding dress huffing and puffing down the aisle.”
I can’t help but laugh at her, “You won’t be fat.”
“Wanna bet? I’ll have this beer gut I’ll be carrying around,”
“Sexy beer gut I mind you,” I say back at her.
The radio starts to play Everything by Michael Buble and I can’t help but pull her up off the couch, “Come dance with me,” and sway with her back and forth in OUR living room.
“Welcome Home, Theresa,” I whisper in her ear as I kiss her cheek.
“You know what I’m most looking forward to?” she asks me as we continue dancing.
“What’s that babe?”
“The kiss in the morning when we wake up side by side.”
I look at her confused, “you’ve spent many nights with me here.”
“But we weren’t living under the same room as an engaged couple.”
“You got a point there. Let’s go to bed,” I murmur.
“It’s five in the afternoon babe, I don’t think so.”
I make the sad face, “fiiiiiiine.”
Theresa laughs at me and purrs into my ear, “actually, let’s go to bed,” winks at me and starts to walk up the stairs.
Oh yeah. I know what’s coming.
4 months later
“Ouch, fuck,” Theresa tosses and turns in the bed.
“You ok?” I ask worried.
She has been putting on a lot of weight; to the point the doctor was worried about her. They were growing a bit too much and it’s put a strain on Theresa. She’s having a hard time walking, her feet have been swollen to the size of a football, and her mood, I’m not even going to mention the mood. She’s grouchy most of the time, but I get it. She’s exhausted and ready to have these babies. I’ve been trying to help her out as much as I can.
“He or She or whatever kicked me.”
I took my hand to feel her stomach and hopefully calm them down when I felt another kick.
“They are active tonight,” I mention as I continue to rub her.
“I know, tell them to stop so I can get to sleep.”
Theresa started to drift when she jumped again.
“Ouch. Michael, something isn’t right, take me to the hospital,” she wakes me.
“Oh shit, really?” I jump out of bed an
d grab her bag, helping her out of bed.
“I don’t know, that’s just excessive kicking and I’m starting to have lower stomach pain. I’m worried.”
“It’s going to be ok, let’s go,” I pull the bathrobe over her, not worried about clothing or anything else, I just want to get her to the hospital. Worry starts to hit me and trying to stay positive for her is extremely hard at the moment. I’ve never prayed or believed in the heavens above, but right now I could use God to help me out. We can’t lose them.
Arriving at the hospital, Theresa is breathing hard, and being kicked by the babies. I gather a wheelchair that sits at the entrance of the hospital. She sits in it and I wheel her to the emergency room. No one seems to be around.
“Hello? Hello?” I scream when I see someone coming out of a room. This must be a quiet night at the ER.
“Hello, how can I help?” the nurse in the white scrubs asks.
“My fiancé is having some pain and the twins are kicking incredibly hard,” I explain.
“Follow me into the exam room, let’s do a CTG and go from there,” agreeing with her I push Theresa into the room.
She sits in the recliner huffing, “I’m scared Michael.”
I sit beside her and hold her hand. “Everything will be ok,” I try to assure her.
Tears are streaming down her face, the nurse takes the belt like monitors and places them on Theresa’s stomach. We listen and watch the lines move up and down. She stares at it for a moment, “I’ll be right back,” she says with worry in her face.
“That’s not good,” Theresa starts to freak out.
“We don’t know that, just breathe baby,”
“I can’t breathe Michael, I’m fucking scared. I didn’t carry them this long just to lose them. No. Not having it.”
The nurse returns with the doctor, they are both pale, white as ghosts with such worry in their face, it shows.
