Inside, however, was chaos. The two delegates whose names had been called were the first to collapse, followed by several other delegates and a few heads of state. By the time others realized they were dead, those others, too, were desperately ill, some fighting for breath, others exsanguinating from all orifices or expiring after clawing at their eyes. A few only were left, and a few heads of state, when the horrifying scene simply ended with perhaps two-thirds of the participants lying dead.
Those few walked out of the conference room and convened in a smaller room, where they proceeded to calmly hear the report of the US delegate, now the de facto head of G20, which had abruptly gone back to G8.
News media personnel on hand to report on the doings of the conference erupted in excited shouting as the delegates dropped, but by the time the carnage was complete were also divided into two camps--the living and the dead. One head of a media corporation was later heard to remark it was a uniquely efficient way to complete a reduction in force. The few reporters and photographers who lived were those who, whether warned ahead of time or simply quick to analyze what was happening, cut their feeds as soon as the first delegates fell dead. Those followed the remaining delegates to the smaller room and calmly reported that a new era had dawned. The theme to emerge would be an end to poverty, hunger, environmental waste and crime.
In a matter of weeks, worldwide, Utopia was becoming a reality.
Cooperating heads of state declared military rule to quell the riots that occurred when announcements of various restrictions began. No one seemed to understand what had happened, except some unfortunate news analysts who mysteriously dropped dead as soon as they attempted to communicate 'subversive' thoughts. None of them had been present at the meeting where they might have witnessed the fate of their late colleagues and learned where their bread was buttered.
Most shocking, however, was the near-universal capitulation as participants on social media outlets began praising the way their governments had responded to crisis. Curfews were such a good idea, so that violent criminals couldn't use cover of darkness to terrorize good citizens. Everyone knew that mass transportation was superior to individual vehicles, most of which had been confiscated. An easy and anonymous way to inform on your neighbor's antisocial behavior was quite conveniently offered. It was all so pleasant, not having to put up with air pollution, noisy neighbors and crime anymore.
Chapter 45 - We will have to do it
Sarah and Aaron had arrived last, as planned. Salome had warned her that there would be no way of knowing the fate of their men until they, hopefully, walked into the Rabbit Hole safe and sound. But, after two weeks, hope was beginning to make way for uncertainty. Rebecca reminding her of the first Antarctic expedition when they all turned up alive on the day of their funeral.
“Remember, they have to keep a low profile,” she urged. We have to keep hoping.”
Sarah would keep hoping, then, for another week or two or a month. After that...she would... no there is no other way – they must be alive and will get here. Meanwhile, there were almost fifty people in this place, and plenty of work to be done to keep them hidden, safe and fed.
They all agreed - they had three things in their favor; Nicholas’ prophesy on his deathbed, the 10th and 8th Cycle libraries and the hope that Daniel, JR and the rest are alive and are making their way to their new home.
They all remembered, not too long ago, when JR said, “You’ll see, we will have to do it.”
