“Thank you, sir,” the little princess exclaimed before turning to show the man standing behind her.
Dominic looked up to tell the father what a delightful little girl he had, but the words froze in his throat.
The man extended his right hand. “Hi, my name is Cade Dark.”
Dominic stood there.
“We’ve just moved in next door,” Cade continued in a friendly voice.
Dominic held his breath.
Shifting his feet, Cade lowered his hand. “Hey, mister, are you okay?”
Staring into eyes dark as burnt charcoal, Dominic felt the hairs on his neck stand up. With shaking fingers he reached for the solid wooden door behind him. Grasping the knob, he slammed it shut without saying a word to the man on his porch.
As his heart pounded, he turned toward the kitchen. “Tricks!”
