Teardrop From The Past: Sci-Fi Novella Page 5

by Jason R. Hemmings

All at once, a brilliant white light filled every inch of the sky, then quickly dulled to leave two objects which continued to burn powerfully. Before long, the daylight found Nouveaux and gradually the warmth returned to the air. I stood there entranced by the miracle forming before us. I sighed loudly with relief as I realised it had worked. But instead of one sun, now there were two in the sky; one oval in appearance, the other smaller and oddly enough, in the shape of a teardrop. It seemed the explosion had broken a small piece away to form twin suns; one burning slightly brighter than the other.

The Council of Light erupted with cheers of delight at my success and the Lorelei’s eyes shone with pleasure at my accomplishment. I unexpectedly found myself a little overwhelmed from the fact that I had saved not only the sun, but this beautiful place and all of us. The cheers receded as Andromeda came over to me. She whispered her thanks softly, then explained I had done something which would never be forgotten by her or the Lorelei. My place with them was already waiting when the time came. It was her gift to me. I smiled, as my eyes began to well from the accomplishment I felt. Andromeda promised me what was to come was nothing less than paradise.

She told me to return to the others for now. We would talk again soon of the possibilities and wisdom she would teach me. I returned to my friends with a carousel of emotions, which gradually became one of pure happiness as the hours continued.

In the coming days, I spent time with Andromeda and Liberté. They were both charming company and made me realise the wonderful future I and the others had to look forward to.

My friends Equualeus and Aries would play in the flower meadows, enjoying the warmth from the rich sunlight, while I found comfort from the company of the bay, where the gentle waves serenaded me unendingly. The time I had remaining in this wonderful dream, would be spent simply savouring every moment, grateful to have been given even one more day here.

Every morning, as the twin suns rose, one seemed to cast a teardrop of regret, for a world left behind and the other a smile of contentment for a new one found.

There would only be one more birthday to come in my life, but it would be the best one, in a beautiful paradise that I only hoped would stay that way.
