The Return of the Man in Blue Page 20

“You can----don’t fuck with me, you’re her trustee. Now I also want a position.” But it was the manner in which he said it. A position not a job. I don’t think he wanted to work, but more a role close to my money and me.

“I want to be Assistant Principal.” Mr. Cortez made his demands.

“You want a job?” Michael asked.

“A Job? Of course not. I just want a position! You think I plan to work? Why should I have to when my rich and wealthy niece will be taking care of her poor veteran uncle?” I made a motion to move against him, Michael grabbed me as I angrily folded my lip back.

“You’re not my uncle, you bastard!” I growled, baring my fists at him. I only wished Michael would have allowed me to get a good strike at him.

“Claudia!” Michael snapped, pulling me back.

“Woo, such fire!” he only laughed at me.

“I have no authority on that.” Michael simply said to Mr. Cortez, regarding the position in school.

“Perhaps not, but you can recommend for me to the district. I heard you’re in shop for a new Assistant Principal, after Slater’s departure.” Michael swallowed hard.

“You will do it. Or I will talk---to anyone that listens. And tell them everything I saw. About that thing you fought in the hallway that day.” He said, as I recalled, as we both did, Michael and I.

“No one will ever believe you.” Michael said, Mr. Cortez laughed.

“Perhaps not at first, but the ramblings of an insane madman do tend to stir the curiosity of others. Perhaps the same people Slater was working for, enough to have them return and start snooping around.”

Michael was speechless just as I was myself.

“The look on your faces is priceless—. Now let’s talk Assistant Principal, when do I start?” Mr. Cortez smirked.

Nothing was going to be the same. No matter how peaceful the school hallways appeared, or how beautiful the place seemed with the Christmas lights. There was a dread that lingered over our heads by the secret that kept us prisoners to people like Mr. Cortez.
