“Coming right up, ma’am.” He glanced between the two of them before taking his leave.

“Momma, listen to me. Please leave him. Thomas can't fire you from your job. We could relocate somewhere. Maybe, close to Daddy. Y-you could find employment there and save up to buy another house. I could find a job at a clothing shop. Any shop.”

“I don't want you working while you're in school. And I refuse to leave my position as Assistant Principal. I have tenure.”

“Omigod! This is for the greater good. Our lives. I can do double duty if it means we're safe.”

“Drop it, Megan. Don't you remember what happened to us the last time I took you and ran?”

“This time we'll be smarter. We have to get away from him. He's going to kill us if we don’t.”

Dinah leaned forward. “He finds us every time. What makes you think this time will be different?”

“We have to try, Momma. Please.”

“He'll just catch us again. Kill me. Rape you and then murder you too. We're better off not antagonizing him.”

The waiter returned with the book and handed it to Dinah. Opening it, she studied the check a moment, then went into her purse, got a credit card and handed it to the waiter.

“What's happened to you?” Meggie whispered after the waiter again walked away. “Where's the strong woman I knew? Don't you remember the way you punished me when I said I wanted to be a homemaker?”

  “I'm not that woman, anymore.”

“That means you'll be okay if I find a man to marry and have kids with? If I don't pursue a career?”

“Yes. You'd always be available then, to patch me up.”

“No, Momma! I'd have my own family. Maybe, you could move in with us?”

“I will not leave Thomas. It isn't worth the hassle. But you're my daughter. I expect you to be there, at my side, protecting me any way you can. I take abuse for you. There are times when I seduce him so he'll leave you alone.”

“One day that won't be enough. I'm scared for us. You, especially. You leave me helpless. You send the cops away. You make me pretend everything is fine.”

  “Because it is!”

“In whose universe? Certainly, not ours.”

“He won't rape you, Meggie. He knows you aren't on birth control. That's the reason I won't allow it.”

“I'm almost eighteen years old. My friends, Farrah and Lacy, have had several lovers. You chose to tell Thomas everything I do, as if it is his right to know.”

“It is his right. You're his stepdaughter.”

  “Stop reminding me.”

“Enough. I've already gone against his wishes by taking you shopping for new school clothes. There'll be consequences for me. You can be a little more grateful for what I go through for you.”

“What about Daddy? If I call him, he'll come and get us.”

A wistful look crossed her mother's face. “No. Leave Big Joe out of this. He's better off where he's at.”

“You need help from someone. The last time we were all together at Disney Land, we were so happy.”

“That was nearly eight years ago and that time has past. He wouldn't leave that horrendous bike club he's involved in. I thought Thomas was different... better.”

“Is being a motorcycle enthusiast so bad? He hangs with guys who enjoys riding. It's his hobby, Momma. That doesn't make Daddy a bad man.”

Dinah gave Megan a sympathetic look.

“Please, Momma. Let me call him. If you don't want to go with him, I do. I can finish my senior year in Hortensia.”

“And leave me to Thomas's whims?”

  “Momma!”

“No! I'm not listening to a word you have to say. If you want to desert me to live an easy and carefree life with your father, then you're not the daughter I thought you were.”

“That's not fair. I love you very much.”

“Prove it to me and drop this conversation. Forget about leaving.”

  “We can leave. We—”

“Let it go. I'm not leaving him.”

Just then, the waiter returned and handed Dinah the book with her credit card and the receipt to sign. Once she completed the task, she handed it back to the waiter and he placed the book underneath his arm.

“Do you need anything else?” he asked.

  Dinah shook her head. “No.”

Dinah stood and Megan followed suit. As they left, Meggie kept her head down, ignoring the stares that followed them, feeling their censure in every step she made

  THAT SAME DAY…

(WE MET OUTLAW AND JOHNNIE EARLY)

Outlaw stared across the desk at his cousin, Johnnie. They were in Johnnie’s office, discussing the profits for the medical diagnostic lab Outlaw owned, and Johnnie headed. To keep up the pretense that the company actually belonged to Johnnie, Outlaw only visited when he knew nobody had gotten there yet or they’d all gone home.

“Ain't see you at the club in a fuckin' minute, motherfucker,” Outlaw said, digging in his cut for his smokes. “What the fuck goin' on?”

Johnnie leaned back in his executive’s chair and adjusted his tie. The preppy motherfucker loved his expensive suits as much as Outlaw loved his cut.

“My Nomad-status gives me a certain freedom,” Johnnie said with smugness. “If I don't have to run into Rack or Snake, I won't. Don't want to fuck them up and stoke the flames of resentment brewing in the club.”

“All cuz of montherfuckin' Big Joe. Fuck that motherfucker.”

Johnnie scowled. “You need to stop dragging your ass and deal with the fucking dissension before it gets out of hand. You've been club president for almost a year now. Shit's getting worse, not better. It's unlike you to be so cautious.”

It was unlike him to have his mind so fucked up, too. “Fuck, Johnnie. I gotta get this shit right. I ain't able to prove no motherfucker tryna fuck over me. Yet, I fuckin' feel it the fuck in my bones. 'Specially with the one year anniversary of Boss bein' dead 'bout to come up.”

Johnnie straightened. “If you need my assistance, I'm still a member. I can have some fun with those two motherfuckers in the meatshack. Wouldn't even need Mortician's help.”

“Yeah, motherfucker, we know your ass get off on the fuckin' scent of blood.” Outlaw grinned.

“That's just one of my many qualities.”

“Ain't came here to talk 'bout them motherfuckers. Rode down for our monthly meetin'. Kiera and Ellen atcha fuckin' house, waitin' for us.”

That got Johnnie’s interest. “How's your arrangement working out?”

“Bitches gonna be bitches. Neither of them happy that I ain't choosin' one as a old lady. They know the fuckin' deal. I fuck both them at the same time or I ain't fuckin' neither one of them. I ain't interested in havin' a fuckin' woman.”

“No shit. I'm surprised Ellen went for that.”

“Bitch ain't got a choice.” Johnnie, on the other hand, had fallen in love with a good girl. Although he used Big Joe’s craziness as an excuse to go Nomad, Outlaw knew it was his bitch that really convinced him. What the fuck ever. They barely ever discussed his woman, and Outlaw wasn’t about to delve into the relationship now. “Kiera a good fuckin' girl, but both them have fucked half the club brothers. I can't take neither of them home to Ma.”

“Especially since you haven't seen Aunt Patricia in almost a year. She misses you.”

Hiding his wince with a scowl, Outlaw scowled at Johnnie. “I'm doin' what the fuck I think right. If I stay the fuck away, then Ma safe.”

“Your sudden absence has made Zoann hate you even worse.”

“Ain't like I give a fuck. She hate my ass any-fuckin-way. Ain’t none of my sisters do fuck-all for my ass but rip into me. Zoann the worst bitch otta all them bitches.”

“Forget the girls for a moment. Aunt Patricia loves you.”

  “Ain't seein' how, Johnnie.”

“Whatever happened to Aunt Patricia isn't your fucking fault. She doesn't blame you. You have to stop blaming yourself. S
top rejecting love. Stop rejecting goodness.”

“Ma too sweet to hold me responsible for all she fuckin' went through. Ain't rejectin' love, just don't believe in the motherfucker. Don't believe in goodness. You the fuckin' choirboy. I'm the fuckin' devil. Stop believin' in God a long fuckin' time ago.”

  “You're fucking hopeless,” Johnnie sneered.

“Nope. Just a fuckin' realist. I ain't aimin' for heaven. Me and that hoof-footed motherfucker meetin' comin' up real soon. The shit brewin' in the club? That's my fuckin' sins catchin' up to me.” Outlaw paused and rubbed the back of his neck, then changed the subject. “I ain't rode my ass down for two fuckin' hours to talk this philosophical bullshit. Let's go over the P&Ls, cuz we got some hot pussy waitin' at your fuckin' house, to get the fuck into.”

  Chapter 1

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Megan Caldwell said. She glared at the three men surrounding her after listening to their suggestion that she go away so her husband, Christopher “Outlaw” Caldwell, could enjoy the bachelor party they’d planned for him. They’d waylaid her on her way from meeting with the lady she’d hired to help her decorate her and Christopher’s house. Meggie only had time to open the door to the room she shared with Christopher at the MC, thank her mother for babysitting, and watch Dinah scoot through the wall of men Meggie now faced. “CJ and I will stay in the room and—“

Mortician, Enforcer of the club and the man with a variety of handy skills, folded his arms, muscles rippled on his dark brown skin, while the skull ring he never seemed to remove leered from his middle finger. Though cold outside, he wore short sleeves under his cut. “C’mon, Megan,” he persisted. “You think Prez’ll enjoy himself knowing you and his kid right down the hall?”

She glanced back at her sleeping son. Judging from her achy breasts, his feeding time was approaching. Only six and a half months old, he was the size of a baby eight or nine months and already a smaller version of Christopher with the blueness of his eyes changing to a deeper shade of green with each passing day. Her hair might’ve been golden, but her son’s was just as black as his daddy’s. A daddy who didn’t let him very far out of his sight. Besides, she didn’t have time to just leave with the near completion of their house and their church wedding ceremony coming up in a month. Not to mention, Valentine’s Day was two days away. “Christopher isn’t going to like this. He won’t want us—“

“Is it him or you, girl?” Digger, Mortician’s real brother, asked, cocking his head to the side.

All right so maybe it was her a little as well. But they wanted to throw her husband a bachelor party, complete with the Bobs—those women paraded out for special occasions and their exceptional oral skills.

“We’re already married,” she pointed out, jabbing Digger in the chest. He was taller than his older brother, a little less broad in the shoulders, arms, and chest. Mortician was ripped. Digger was muscled but…she frowned. Was she actually sizing up her husband’s officers?

“Why does he need a bachelor party?”

“Right, Megan,” Val, the bald-headed RC, grunted. His mouth kicked up in a smile, revealing the sexy dimple that made him irresistible to so many girls.

Umkay. Yes. Yes, she was sizing these men up. Men she’d known for over a year and thought of as friends and older brothers.

“Why you need some big fucking church wedding?” Val went on in the steely voice he adopted for intimidation. “You already married, huh?”

She’d walked right into that one. She stepped farther into the hallway, so their voices wouldn’t prematurely awaken her son. She’d be so glad when their house was finished because she was sick to death of living day-in and day-out at the MC. “Where am I supposed to go all of a sudden?”

“I’m with Megs,” a voice to the right of her said. Johnnie, Christopher’s cousin, and the club VP, leaned against the wall next to her.

Meggie looked at the ankle boots she wore, not wanting to stare at Johnnie. The one glimpse she had seen of his chiseled face, when she’d glanced between the space created by Mortician’s head and the wall, proved enough for her.

“Christopher will have your balls if he knows you’re pressuring his wife to leave,” he continued.

Johnnie’s blond hair, longer on top than on the sides, made his silver-gray eyes stand out. The heat of his gaze lasered her profile and she shifted her weight beneath his scrutiny. She didn’t have to look at him to know he studied her. He always did. And not in a brotherly way.

“I’m suggesting you asswipes back off,” he said lazily.

Meggie rocked back on her heels, satisfied at his defense. “He’s known about this bachelor party all along. He’s never once said he didn’t want me there. Or, at least, on the premises.”

“Prez wouldn’t want to upset you,” Mortician went on. His dreads had grown even longer in the fourteen or fifteen months since she’d met him. Today, they were queued and his strong neck flexed with his movements. “But we gonna have associates, hangers-on, and brothers from our support clubs as well as dudes from our out of town chapters. You know if you’re here Prez’s either gonna want you out there with him or he’s gonna be in here with you. How’s that gonna make him look to the other brothers?”

“Like he loves and respects his wife,” she snapped.

“Who the fuck are you?” Johnnie snarled, drawing everyone’s attention to a man who’d just walked out of the main room and into the hallway where only members and their guests were allowed.

Sardonic green eyes studied them and Meggie frowned when she caught a brief glimpse of him as Mortician shifted and turned to the side. A blue bandanna covered the man’s head and he wore a cut with unrecognizable rockers.

&
nbsp; He raised his hands. “Sorry, brother. Looking for the shitter.”

The men now hid her, their backs to her in a semi-circle of towering, muscled protection. Behind them, she stood on her tiptoes to get another look at the interloper, placing her hands on Digger’s shoulders to balance herself.

“This ain’t the fucking way,” Digger growled.

“Yeah, fuckhead. Public shitters in the other direction,” Val added, raising an arm.

Meggie guessed it was to point toward the public shitters. They were on the other side of the main room, in the area of the pool tables and dart boards.

“Sorry,” the man said again, though something about his mocking tone told Meggie he wasn’t sorry at all.

“You forgiven this fucking time,” Mortician called. “Make a mistake like this again and we not responsible for where the fuck parts of you end up.”

Meggie poked Mortician in the back at the threat, though she knew the score. She sighed and thought of Christopher’s bachelor party. Men like the stranger would overrun the place and Christopher’s well-earned reputation as a bad-ass meant everything to him. At the thought, her defenses crumbled. Mortician was right. To her, Christopher was everything she could ever want--a wonderful father and a very dedicated husband. To everyone else…he was both feared and respected because of the way he carried himself and the way he handled things. She wouldn’t want him to lose face because she couldn’t allow him to enjoy his bachelor party without her around.

They turned back to her and she knew the man was gone. She heard the first stirrings of her son. On cue, her breasts opened like a faucet. “Fine,” she said before they started in on her again. “I’ll call Farrah and Lacey and go to Seattle.”

“Seattle?” they chorused, glancing between one another with consternation. She hadn’t seen her friends since forever, so, maybe, this would be a good time to visit. At least, they’d serve as a distraction about her husband’s bachelor party.

Digger recovered first. “Meggie girl, well, I guess that’ll be cool. We know you won’t change your mind and decide to come back during the party with you being so far away.”
