“Now I understand his ignorance,” the man sneered, pissing Christopher off so much he almost pulled his piece and blew assfuck away. “What did he do? I’ll tell you what he’s done. He cannot, or won’t, use proper English. Him say this and him say that is unacceptable speech. He knows better.” Another once over. “Or, maybe not.”
Christopher brought Megan’s face to mind, breathing in and out, attempting to calm himself. Murder would get him taken away from her. Of course, he could always claim temporary fucking insanity.
“Secondly, he called a student an ashfuck before shoving him to the ground. I can’t have that behavior toward one of my best students, who comes from a very respectable family.”
“You did that, CJ?”
“Don’t ask him,” Dr. Hart said stiffly. “Ask me. I’m the adult here.”
“In a motherfuckin’ minute, you gonna be the fuckin’ corpse here if you don’t shut the fuck up.”
“Are you threatening me, sir?”
“Ain’t no fuckin’ threat in it. It’s a fuckin’ promise. Now, shut the fuck up and lemme talk to my boy.”
Dr. Hart bristled. It surprised Christopher the motherfucker didn’t run to the phone and call in the badges.
“CJ, look at me, boy,” he ordered.
Sniffling, CJ leaned back and looked Christopher in the eye, tears slipping down his cheeks. Christopher had had it so fucking rough in school, which led to him dropping out. He didn’t want that for his children.
First Johnnie talked about Megan not being right for diamonds now this motherfucker was fucking with CJ.
“What the fuck happen, boy?” he asked gruffly, never wanting to see CJ so distressed, especially at a place he was supposed to feel safe.
“Him say I stupid and hit me first.”
Christopher glared at the principal. “Where the fuck the other lil motherfucker?”
He stiffened. “In the classroom. No one saw this child do anything to CJ. Robbie’s an exemplary student. He wouldn’t fight.”
“Him did!” CJ cried, then pointed to Hart. “Him hit me too, ‘Law.”
“You put your fuckin’ hands on my kid?” Strike fucking three.
“It’s called corporal punishment, Mr. Caldwell, and as a school administrator I’m well within my rights.”
“As his old man, I’ma be well within my motherfuckin’ rights choppin’ your goddamn hands off.” Fuck him, he had to control his fucking temper. The motherfucker would call in the cops and CPS. That would give Knox Harrington more ammunition and Megan would have a fucking fit. “Call the fuckin’ dean,” he demanded. “Then, have Ryan Taylor sent to the office.”
“No.”
Setting CJ on his feet, Christopher got his cellphone. He didn’t have the dean of this motherfucker on speed dial because he didn’t think he’d have to use the number. It took him a minute to find the information.
“Dean Wilson,” Christopher started when he answered.
“Yes?”
“This Outlaw Caldwell. I got a fuckin’ situation and I ain’t too fuckin’ happy about it.”
Throat clearing. “Er, yes sir?”
“My son and my nephew in this motherfucker. I recall makin’ a big ass donation a few fuckin’ weeks ago. I also re-fuckin-member agreein’ to sponsor some bullshit spring festival. Now, this preppy assfuck you got for a principal fuckin’ with my boy. Hittin’ him. Puttin’ him in a goddamn corner. Singlin’ him the fuck out.”
“The school administers corporal punishment, sir,” the dean pointed out.
The principal offered a smug smile.
“Not to my kid. Know why? Cuz me and his ma ain’t consent to no fuckin’ corporal punishment. And cuz my ass administer ass beatins to grown fuckheads hittin’ on my boy.”
Smile wiped away.
“But I’m fuckin’ thinkin’ that shit ain’t necessary in this fuckin’ case. Return my fuckin’ money and fuck your festival.”
“That money didn’t buy you the right to threaten us,” Dr. Hart said. “We have other donors. We don’t need a gang member’s.”
“Pete, let me handle this,” the dean admonished. “As our newest and biggest supporter, Mr. Caldwell has every right to expect, er, certain things.”
Dr. Hart lifted his eyebrows. The shock on his face made Christopher’s day.
“Yes, of course. I completely understand,” Hart called to Wilson.
“I bet the fuck you do,” Christopher said coldly.
“I’ll straighten this out, Dean Wilson.”
“Yes, yes, Pete, please do. Mr. Caldwell, let me offer my apologies for any misunderstanding. Pete wasn’t aware of your generosity to our school.”
“Make him and every other motherfucker aware cuz next time I fuckin’ come, I’m takin’ my boy and my fuckin’ nephew and puttin’ them some-fuckin-where else. My girl want CJ here, but once I fuckin’ tell her you hit him, she might decide to take him the fuck out. She fuckin’ love the fuck outta CJ.”
“Please extend my apologies to Mrs. Caldwell. She’s a wonderful woman. If she has any questions or concerns, I’ll be more than happy to meet with her,” Wilson said. “Why don’t you send CJ back to class and we forget this incident ever happened?”
Christopher grunted a response and disconnected the call.
CJ wrapped his arm around Christopher’s leg. “I go with you, ‘Law.”
Christopher should allow CJ to go back to class, but he didn’t have the heart to after what he’d walked in on.
“You cannot,” Dr. Hart spat. “You’re going back to class.”
He could only be bitched out so much in one day for the sake of staying out of jail and also to not ruin this year’s holidays for Megan.
His patience ending, Christopher growled, and grabbed Hart by the throat. “Listen up, assfuck, this my kid. You ain’t got fuck-all to say about what the fuck I decide. He got perfect fuckin’ attendance and bring in good fuckin’ grades. He woulda been the fuck in class if you ain’t decided to fuck with him. To-fuckin-day, he comin’ home with me. To-fuckin-morrow, he comin’ the fuck back to school and you leavin’ him the fuck alone. Better yet…”
He shoved Hart away from him. The motherfucker stumbled back, coughing and sputtering.
Christopher retrieved his phone and redialed Dean Wilson.
“Yes, Mr. Caldwell? How may I help you again?”
“I want this stupid motherfucker outta here.” He knew how it felt to be intimidated and looked down upon by school officials. If he had to kill every fucking teacher who upset his boy, he would. CJ would get the education Christopher never had and he’d do it with teachers who’d uplift and support him. Not tear him down. “Motherfucker hit my boy and made fuckin’ fun of how he fuckin’ talk. CJ ain’t five yet. He gonna fuckin’ catch up and talk right all the fuckin’ time. But this motherfucker ain’t stayin’ head of this fuckin’ school a minute fuckin’ longer. Motherfucker ain’t fuckin’ fit to be a educator.”
Dr. Hart drew himself up. “You can’t order, or bully anyone, to fire me. I’ll have you arrested so fast for your threats, your head’ll spin.”
Christopher growled and CJ tensed, holding him a little tighter.
“Pete!” Dean Wilson called. “Can you please restrain from commenting?” He cleared his throat. “Er, Mr. Caldwell, Pete is the brightest member of my staff. He’s young. Maybe, a little high strung.”
“He can be so fuckin’ high strung his ass need a string to keep him from floatin’ the fuck off into space,” Christopher snapped. “So shut the fuck up and listen the fuck up. This assfuck put his fuckin’ hands on my boy and insulted me from the fuckin’ moment I walked the fuck in here. All in front my boy. Then, he talked about the way my boy talk. That shit ain’t fuckin’ flyin’. Tell this motherfucker to get his shit and fuckin’ split. Now.”
“Be reasonable, Mr. Caldwell,” Dean Wilson whined.
“I ain’t the fuckin’ reasonable one,” Christopher snarled. “My girl the reasonable li
l motherfucker. She ain’t here. My ass here. That make shit even worse. We trustin’ our boy here with you fucks. She had to fuckin’ go a-fuckin-lone to her appointment for our new baby. If you motherfuckers know nothin’ about me, you should fuckin’ know I ain’t a happy motherfucker when something come between me and my Megan. And she’d be so fuckin’ hurt and worried about CJ if she think he comin’ to school around a bunch of bullyin’ adults. She love the fuck outta him and I love the fuck outta her. If she upset, my ass upset, and no motherfucker want me upset.”
“Mr. Caldwell, let’s talk about this,” Dean Wilson tried again.
“Fuck no! I ain’t the only motherfucker donatin’ dollars to keep this motherfucker open, but I fuckin’ know your fuckin’ revenue down. Dr. Hart salary pretty fuckin’ big. I fuckin’ know your support down. I know if I fuckin’ pull my support, you might not fuckin’ be open in the spring.”
Christopher knew that because he’d had Riley look into each school Megan and Zoann was thinking about sending Ryan and CJ to. Then, he’d had Johnnie study their financial reports before telling Megan he was fine with whatever school she chose and then fucking hinting at the one he’d like. He’d had Val do the same with Zoann and manipulate the situation to their benefit.
The school he’d chosen was struggling financially. Fucking perfect to control who the fuck taught his son.
“You fire this motherfucker, Wilson, or I’m findin’ another school for my boy and let this motherfucker close the fuck down.”
Pete finally got the fucking seriousness of the situation and turned gray with apprehension. “I-I won’t leave my position. I refuse to. I can’t leave. I have a family. My wife and son depend on me.”
“Don’t give a fuck,” Christopher snapped. “Shoulda thought about that before you hit my boy. Leavin’ make you a lucky motherfucker. Your ass get to walk the fuck away, in one fuckin’ piece. Make your move now, Wilson. Hart stay. I go. Along with all my fuckin’ support.”
A long sigh came over the phone line. “All right, Mr. Caldwell,” he said, in a boo-hooey tone. “You win. Pete, I’m sorry, son, but I have to fire you. Without Mr. Caldwell’s financial support, we will have no school.”
“Dean Wilson, let me make it up to you.” Dr. Hart sidled a begging glance to Christopher. “To Mr. Caldwell. I was hasty about everything.”
“Shut the fuck up. You ain’t whinin’ your way outta this. Your ass delivered a one-sided corporal punishment to my boy when he was only fuckin’ defendin’ himself against that fuckin’ lil’ bully motherfucker. You let that lil’ assfuck off scot free. You ain’t suppose to touch my kid under no fuckin’ circumstance. Get your shit, motherfucker, and get to fuckin’ steppin’. I’m bringin’ CJ back to-fuckin-morrow. Don’t let me fuckin’ find you here.”
He let those words hang in the air.
“Come on, boy,” Christopher ordered, taking his son’s hand and storming out of the office.
Outside, Christopher regretted not bringing his pickup. He didn’t have CJ’s helmet with him, but he kept the riding belt in his saddlebag. Once he had CJ secured to him, he headed to the club.
He’d enjoy the crisp, fall air if it didn’t remind him he’d soon have to suffer through trick-or-fucking-treating again this year, but he wouldn’t complain. After last year’s holidays, Christopher was just happy to be here to celebrate more with his family.
At the clubhouse, he guided CJ inside, finding Johnnie and Rory. With another year before he started school, Johnnie’s kid attended an elite fucking daycare.
“CJ!” Rory squealed, jumping from his seat to rush forward.
CJ grinned. “Ro!”
Rory tipped his head back and looked at Christopher. “Uncle Chris,” he said, his speech perfect even though he was younger than CJ.
Christopher sighed. He supposed Rory imitated his old man and his kid mimicked him. In this instance, that wasn’t a particularly good thing. Later, he’d talk to Megan. She’d know what the fuck to do.
“Yo, John Boy.”
“Christopher,” Johnnie greeted, lifting a brow at CJ. “Since Kendall didn’t pick Rory up from your house to bring him to daycare, I decided to let him stay home. What’s up with CJ?”
“The motherfuckin’ principal called us the fuck in. I might have to blow that school the fuck up.”
Johnnie scowled.
“Can I see?” CJ asked.
“No!” Christopher snapped. “I was just talkin’, boy. Ain’t blowin’ nothin’ the fuck up.”
“I’ve been thinking about Knox. I really think you have him pegged wrong.”
“Don’t give a fuck if you think that shit or not. The motherfucker a cop.”
Johnnie shook his head. “It’s your jealousy talking. He’s given me no indication that he’s here to betray us. Brooks told us he needed a legal assistant. He has one. Unless Brooks is working with Knox, it’s a stretch to believe the man’s undercover.”
This was the same argument Johnnie had been putting forth for the past week, since Christopher first began to suspect Knox. That was one of the reasons why he hadn’t made the motherfucker strip down to his cock. He wanted Johnnie to be right. He wanted a peaceful holiday season.
In several days, the girls would decorate the clubhouse for the Halloween party, then they’d start planning for Thanksgiving. Christopher didn’t need to mar this time with fucking up a fucking cop.
If he was right, he wanted airtight, rock fucking solid evidence. He wanted the motherfuckers Knox was reporting to. The agency. It had to be the Feds. The local and county boys didn’t fuck with him.
He scrubbed a hand over his face. “Knox a dumb assfuck to be fuckin’ with me. I don’t give a fuck what the fuck he is. He fuckin’ pissed me off.”
“What happens if Roxy finds out he’s just a regular legal assistant? What then?”
“If he just a regular law fuckin’ clerk, then that’s what the fuck he is. He still due a ass-beatin’ for fuckin’ with Megan.”
“You think you did the right thing by asking Roxy to get involved?”
“If she ain’t wantin’ to do it, she woulda sent my ass away,” Christopher said, a little guilty. If she was his ma, he wouldn’t want her using her pussy to get information. But Roxy was a tough bitch. If any-fucking-body could handle themselves, she could.
Refusing to second guess himself or allow Johnnie to do it, Christopher stood. “C’mon, let’s go the fuck to the house. Let the boys run the fuck around while we go over some fuckin’ numbers and I wait for Megan.”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Johnnie said, getting to his feet.
Together, the four of them headed to the pathway. Time would tell if Johnnie was right about Knox or if Christopher’s instincts had once again guided him in the correct direction.
Chapter Five
Roxy stopped the Escalade in front of a run-down house. The shiny black burglar bars contrasted with the peeling green paint, indicating they were a new addition.
She almost felt sorry for Charlotte, at how far she’d fallen. Except she didn’t. Judging from the earful Roxy had gotten about the goings-on while she’d been recovering, Charlotte got what she deserved. She was lucky to have walked away with her life.
In silence, Kendall guided Roxy to the door. The girl had been silent almost the entire ride. Roxy let her be. She had a lot to think over and come to terms with, whether she decided to stay or leave once and for all.
“Kendall, darling…” Charlotte started, her voice trailing off when she spied Roxy.
“Hi, Charlotte,” Kendall greeted with a smile. “I hope you don’t mind we stopped by.”
“My door is always open to you.” Charlotte stared with meaning at Roxy.
Roxy frowned at her, but kept her mouth shut. She had to get inside to tell her what needed to be told.
“Roxy’s important to me,” Kendall said.
Stepping aside to allow them entry, Charlotte gave a short nod. Once in, they waited as she secured t
he door with four different locks. She looked haggard, not at all like the well-groomed woman Roxy had met once or twice.
“Follow me,” Charlotte stated with the same superior attitude.
If the outside was shitty, then the interior was fucked. Cracked walls. Creaky floors. Musty scent.
In the small living room, furnished with a couch set that had seen better days, the woman ignored Roxy to focus on Kendall.
“You’re looking well,” she said after Kendall and Roxy sat side-by-side on the sofa with Charlotte seated in a duct-taped chair across from them. “How are you feeling, dear?”
“I’m doing well. Following my doctor’s orders.”
“Following your husband’s orders,” Charlotte accused, as if Kendall did wrong.
Perfect opening.
“Yeah, about that,” Roxy started.
Charlotte crossed her legs. “I beg your pardon? I don’t remember addressing you. I’m talking to Kendall. The only reason you’re in here is because Kendall is.”
“Charlotte!” Kendall said on a gasp, genuine shock covering her face.
“You can take the bitch out her element but you can’t take the bitch out the bitch,” Roxy snorted.
“Get out. You don’t belong around Kendall or her children.”
“Charlotte, stop, please!” Kendall cried.
“You’re as ignorant as those bikers Kendall has tied herself to. You’re so far beneath me and her, but Kendall continually lowers her standards—”
“Okay, bitch, I’ve fucking had it.” Slipping off her wig, Roxy held it out to Kendall. “Hold this, sugar. I paid a lot for that shit. I don’t want it fucked up while I’m beating some ass.”
Kendall grabbed Roxy’s arm, attempting to keep her seated. “Roxy, don’t,” she begged, even as she took the wig.
“Please do, Roxy,” Charlotte spat, getting to her feet, too. “I’ll have you arrested.”
“Then, please, let me give your ass something to have me arrested for.” Balling her fist, Roxy punched Charlotte’s jaw before walloping her eye, grazing her chin, and yanking a handful of her hair. Charlotte crumpled to her hands and knees, breathing hard.
