"Trust me; there is no way in hell they are trained for this. And besides, if they’re still drugged up, they’ll be useless. Grab that bag. Come with me."
"What? Me?"
"Yeah. And hurry up. We don't have long. I’m guessing the nano-swarm knows we’re here. Especially after all that noise."
"It? It knows we’re here?"
"Yeah, the black smoke. It learns. It gets smarter."
"Wait. I don’t think you understand. Kenji, Daniel. They’re soldiers. If they’ve been drugged then we need to wait for them to get it out of their system."
"We don’t have time for that. Look, I know they're soldiers. But trust me; they do not know how to deal with this. The nano-swarm is not going anywhere. It knows there is food here. And it’s got a taste for meat."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"The nano-swarm. That black smoke cloud thing out there. I don’t know exactly what it is or where it came from. But I do know this. It hunts. It feeds. That’s all it does."
"How? How do you know that?"
"First hand experience. I’ve seen it in action. General Spears briefed us back at the Fortress. He called them, ‘rouge nano-swarms’. The recon teams called it black smoke. Another one of the ‘anomalies’."
"Can’t we just hide?" I asked. "Can’t we make a run for it?"
"No. It will follow us. Chase us down."
"Why don’t we wait it out? Down in the vault?"
"Look, this town is the last place in the world we should be. The priest has turned it into a freakin drive thru, fast food joint for those monsters. He trained them to feed here. I don’t want to spend a minute longer in this town than necessary. They way I see it. We only have one option."
"Which is?"
"We have to take it down."
Once again it was do or die. Once again it was time to make a stand.
"I need your help, little lady."
It was weird hearing Ben ask for my help. He was a huge man and at that moment he was covered in blood, cut up to all hell, gun in hand. He looked like the last person in the world who needed help from anybody, except maybe psychiatrist. And on the flip side he’s the last person in the world you would normally agree to help. There’s a reason parents tell their kids not to take candy from strangers. It was to avoid people like this.
But I had no choice. This was not a normal situation.
I took a deep breath. "How do we kill it?"
"We can’t kill it."
"What?"
"Just grab the bloody bag. We need to do this now."
"No," I said. And as soon as the word left my mouth I regretted it.
Ben didn’t look like the kind of guy who heard the word ‘no’ very often.
He stared at me. Waiting for a damn good reason why we shouldn’t go right now.
"We need the guys," I said. "We have to get them first. We’re stronger as a group."
Kenji’s wise words coming out of my mouth.
Ben thought it over. And finally gave in. "Fine. We do it your way. But we have to hurry."
CHAPTER 28
We made our way down to the church basement where the bald guy had told Ben they’d taken the boys.
Sure enough that’s where they were.
They must’ve taken them down there after they had tied Maria and myself up, I thought. Then again they could’ve done it at the same time. We were all unconscious.
The guys were lying on the cots. They were all tied to one another.
Ben checked their pulses quickly. "They’re alive."
We untied them and waited for them to come back around. Kenji and Jack were still sound asleep. Daniel was the only one sort of half awake. He was completely confused and disorientated. It took him a while to understand what was going on. Once he finally caught up, he just shook his head. He looked exhausted. Upset. Like he had let the group down.
Kenji finally woke.
Jack was still asleep.
"The water was spiked," I said.
When I told them what had happened they all reacted differently. At first they were confused.
And then angry. Very angry.
Jack was awake for a little bit, but then a few minutes later he was asleep again. Apparently he had downed most the bottle of water.
We decided to relocate to the bank vault as it was slightly more secure than the church basement. And not nearly as creepy. Kenji said the children’s toys were giving him the heebie jeebies. His exact words. Also, Daniel wanted to make sure Maria was all right.
As we made our way up the stairs, I told them to brace themselves for the gruesome scene at the church altar.
No one said a word as we walked past.
Daniel was frozen, looking up at the crucified priest.
Kenji had to pull him away.
Ben stepped outside the church and made sure the road was empty. He gave us the all clear, and waved us forward. We finally made it down to the bank vault. I don’t know about the others but being underground in the bank vault did make me feel a little bit safer. I could see why the townspeople had chosen to hide down here.
Maria was waiting for us. She was not happy. I told her that she should consider herself lucky. There was no way she would’ve wanted to see the crime scene upstairs. But she did not believe me. I think she was about to punch me or something for locking her down here by herself but then she saw Jack.
Kenji carried him in. He was still unconscious. Maria helped put Jack down on the floor. She sat with him, stroking his hair, making sure he was all right. All her attention was now on Jack. Luckily this had saved me from her fists.
"What happened up there?" Maria asked.
"I’ll explain later," I said.
"What?"
"Trust me; you did not want to see that."
We caught our breath, tried to compose ourselves. I picked up the bottle of water they had thrown in with us when we were first locked up. I took a sip, offered it to the guys.
"Are you sure it’s not spiked?" Daniel asked.
"We were all drinking it earlier, remember. It should be fine."
He took the bottle from me and sniffed it. And then had a sip.
Even though we knew this particular bottle of water was fine to drink, we all sniffed it before drinking it. And then we only took small sips at first. But we forced ourselves to drink it. We needed to stay hydrated if we wanted any chance of getting out of this town alive.
"We don’t have time for this," Ben said. "We need to make a move."
Ben wanted to get going right then and there. But I told him we weren’t going anywhere. Not without Jack.
"If this is going to work. We need Jack."
Ben was not happy, especially since we had to wait over an hour for Jack to come around. Initially he opened his eyes, but even then he was barely conscious. We fed him small sips of water for awhile until he could finally speak. And then, when he finally regained his senses he refused to drink the water, fearing it was also spiked. We had to assure him the water was drinkable.
It took him about another thirty minutes just to be able to stand.
After that, Ben said we couldn’t wait any longer. "It’ll be dark soon. We won’t be able to see it at night."
"Wait," I said. "I thought the priest said it only ever came on hot days."
"It’s more active on warmer days," Ben answered. "Like a reptile."
"You mean it’s cold blooded?" I asked, completely confused.
"No. It uses the sun for energy."
"So why can’t we just wait until the sun goes down? Won’t it lose power?"
"No. It doesn’t work like that. It has the ability to store energy."
We could hear noises coming from upstairs. The hissing noise. Glass shattering. A noise that sounded like wood groaning.
"Does it sound like it’s going away?" Ben said.
"What the hell are you talking about," Kenji asked. "What are those noises?"
"It’s the nano-
swarm," Ben said. "Black smoke. It’s looking for us. And it’s hungry. We need to take care of it now."
Kenji did not understand at all. "Nano-swarm?"
"What happened up there?" Daniel asked. "What did you do to the priest? What happened to his men?"
"Justice," Ben replied.
"How many are left?"
"None. They’re all dead."
"You killed them all?"
"No. Some of them got away. But they didn’t make it very far."
"Why not? What happened?"
"The black smoke found them."
"What?"
Ben was fed up. He was getting more and more impatient. "How many times do I have to say this? There’s a goddamn rouge nano-swarm up there. It’s looking for food. Sooner or later it will find us. This bank vault won’t stop it."
"No way. There’s no way," Daniel said, his voice trailing off as he thought about the implications of what Ben was saying.
"So what do we do now?" Maria asked.
Good freakin question, I thought. What the hell do we do? How do we stop it?
Ben picked up his gym bag, and put it on the pallet of cash. He arranged some glow sticks around the bag, and zipped it open.
"I don’t know what it is exactly," he said. "I only heard rumors. People just scared, telling ghost stories. From what I can tell, the nano-swarms have something to do with the cure."
"The cure?" Daniel asked.
"Yeah. For the Oz virus. Apparently, the military tried out an experimental technology. Rushed it through without testing it properly. I guess, they were desperate."
"So what the hell does that black smoke thing have to do with a goddamn cure?"
"Keep your voice down. I don’t have the answers. I only heard rumors."
He took out a gun from the gym bag. It looked like an oversized machine gun. A rifle way bigger than any of the ones I’d seen. He also had a few more grenades.
"The black smoke thing," he continued. "It’s a nano-swarm. Little tiny robots. A mechanical plague."
"You’re joking," I said.
"Do I look like I’m joking?"
"Why the hell would the military release a mechanical plague?" Maria asked.
"If I was a betting man, I’d say they released the nano-swarms in the hopes that it would ‘eat’ the Oz virus."
"Eat it?"
"Yeah."
He took out a long rectangular container from the gym bag and opened it up. He removed what appeared to be three metal spears that were about three feet in length. He loaded them into the large gun, one by one.
"These are harpoons," he said. "They’re made out of tungsten. The tip is diamond coated. They are designed to pierce any and all surfaces."
"What the hell for?" I asked.
"The harpoons are telescopic," he continued. "They are fired from this launcher."
"And then what?"
"The harpoons pierce the ground. You need to fire three to set up an EMP field. Fire the first two, set up the field. The third one activates it. The only problem is the target has to be within the field for it to work."
"So the pulse is directed inwards?" Daniel said.
"That’s right. With a normal electromagnetic pulse, the pulse moves outwards like a blast wave. The pulse destroys all electronics in the area. However, this is no good if you wanna use it as a weapon in the field. You’re just as likely to knock out your own equipment as well as your enemy’s equipment. So they designed this system. It concentrates the EMP inwards, in a contained field. The Electromagnetic pulse shocks the nano-swarm, puts them in a state of hibernation. But it's only a temporary solution. If we get up to the bell tower. We’ll have a clear shot."
"And that’ll be the end of it, right?" I asked.
"It should be," Ben said. "At least temporarily. I think."
"Temporarily? This is the worst plan ever. You do realize that, don’t you?"
"This is the only plan we’ve got. We have to do this or we die. It’s as simple as that. These things, that monster and the black smoke, they know they can feed here. That’s why they keep coming back. We need to make a stand and then we need to get the hell out of here. Trust me; I’ve seen these things in action. This is the only way."
"So how do we get it within the EMP field?" Kenji asked.
Ben smiled. "I’m glad you asked. To get the nano-swarm to cooperate, we need live bait."
CHAPTER 29
Live bait.
Of all of the plans ever invented by mankind - live bait has got to be one of the worst. It's right up there with ‘hey let’s split up’, and ‘hey let’s use a virus as a biological weapon’.
So that's why Ben finally agreed to my demands of getting the guys first, I thought.
He wanted them for bait.
The more meat running through the streets the better.
Great.
"Are you sure we can't hide down here until it leaves?" Maria asked.
"It will find us," Ben said. "And if it finds us here, in this vault, we will have nowhere to go. Nowhere. We're dead. "
"So if it comes in here right now, we're dead?" I asked.
"Yes. The longer we stay down here, the more danger we’re in, the greater risk we run. That’s why we need to do this now."
Jack was still half asleep. We had to slap him in the face to get him to wake up. Once we knew he was fully paying attention, we quickly explained the plan to Jack. He did not like it one bit.
"So basically, what you’re saying is, we’re gonna go up there and run around and draw it to us?"
"Yes," I said.
"So we’re live bait."
"Correct."
"Look, buddy," Ben said. "We don’t have a choice. If we don’t corner it, if we don’t act now, it’ll find us down here. And if that happens we’re as good as dead."
Jack nodded his head slowly. I think he slowly realized what we were up against, realized there was no other choice. "OK. So, what do you need us to do?"
"I need you to lure it to me. If we can get the majority of the swarm within the EMP field, that'll give us the best chance to get away. Once the swarm goes into a state of hibernation it takes time for each nano bot to reboot. Giving us time to get out of here, without it following us."
"How do you know all this?" Kenji asked.
"Rumors. From the Special Forces soldiers stationed at the Fortress."
"Let’s do this," Daniel said. "But Maria stays out of harm’s way. She either stays down here in the vault, or up in the bell tower."
"Why?" Ben asked. "We need everyone."
"She’s too valuable."
"Valuable? What the hell does that mean?"
Daniel hesitated, but then finally confessed. If we were going to work together with Ben to get out of here, if he was going to come with us, then he needed to know the truth about Maria.
"It means she’s immune to the Oz virus."
Ben looked at Maria suspiciously. "No. No way."
"Yes way."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"You don’t have to believe it. We’re just telling you. And were telling you that Maria stays out of harm’s way. Got it?"
Maria pulled up the leg of her jeans and showed Ben where she had been bitten. "I was careless," she said. "I got bitten. But I didn’t turn."
"That’s why we’re walking through the desert," I explained. "To get Maria out. We’re on our way to Daniel’s camp. There’s a jet waiting. Daniel can fly us out of here."
"Where’s the camp?" Ben asked.
"I can’t tell you that." Daniel said.
"Why not?"
"It’s classified information."
"Classified? You’re camp’s location is classified?"
"That’s right."
"You’re not regular army, are you?" Ben asked. "You’re not U.S. military."
"No."
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"I’m a mercenary. I’m here for Maria."
"How
old are you? Who do you work for?"
"What the hell has my age got to do with anything?"
"Just tell me."
"I’m nineteen."
"Bullshit."
"Excuse me?"
"Who do you work for? You’re a private contractor, right? A gun for hire? Who hired you?"
Daniel stuttered. Paused. Tripped over his own words. Why was he flustered?
"I… I can’t tell you that. I don’t know who hired us. We were contacted by an asset. The asset had a codename. We never know their real name."
"So why did you take the job?"
"Because it was too important not to take. Because we got paid a boat load of money. Because we were the best. The U.S. military had failed. They had their hands full, they were stretched too thin. We were the only ones who could pull this kind of mission off without any outside assistance."
"You lying bastard. Tell me what you know."
"What?"
"What else do you know?"
Silence.
"Answer me."
"What are you talking about? I asked
"He knows something," Ben said. "He's hiding something. I want to know what."
"Daniel, what is he talking about?"
"I don’t know."
"You already knew about the mutations, didn’t you?" Ben said. "You already knew about the nano-swarms. What else do you know?"
"I have no idea what you’re talking about. Before we got into Sydney, I had no idea how bad it was. I didn’t know about any of this!"
"We saw something in Sydney," I said trying to get everyone to calm down.
"What did you see?" Ben asked.
"Something big. Strong. We couldn’t see it clearly because of the dust storm, but it pushed an eighteen wheeler truck out of its way like it was nothing. It ripped a fire escape off the wall of a skyscraper like it was nothing."
Ben nodded. "What else?"
No one said anything. So again, I answered, even though I didn't believe the words that came out of my mouth.
"Wires," I said.
"Wires?"
"Yes. I'm not sure if they were power lines or telephone lines. They moved like they were alive."
"Support wires too," Daniel added. "On the Sydney tower. They moved."
"Keep going," Ben said.
He said it like he had already seen what we'd seen, like he already knew. Like a sorcerer who had been watching our journey through a crystal ball or magic mirror.
