Secrets at St Jude’s: Rebel Girl Page 18

by Carmen Reid

Gina looked at the phone in her hands.

‘OK,’ she agreed finally, then slowly and carefully tapped out the words: I AM SO SORRY. I DON’T WANT US TO BREAK UP. GINA XX

As she looked at them, totally unsure as to whether to send them or not, Amy leaned over and hit the Send button for her.

  ‘Amy!’ Gina stormed.

‘That’s what friends are for,’ Amy replied with a smile.

‘Give me your phone?’ Niffy asked Gina.

‘NO!’ Gina replied, sure that Niffy was going to send Dermot something even worse.

‘No, nothing to do with Dermot. I want to send a message to Angus.’

  Gina handed the mobile over.

Niffy texted, reading the words aloud: HEY, ANGUS, GET FINN TO CALL AMY ASAP. TOTALLY OK WITH ME. NIFF XX

Despite the shriek of protest from Amy, Niffy hit Send before the phone could be wrestled from her hands.

‘That’s what friends are for,’ Niffy said with a grin. Then, all of a sudden:

  ‘Action stations. Headlights approaching driveway.’

‘It’ll just be another taxi . . . it’s like Waverley Station out there at this time of night,’ Amy said.

‘No, no, up to the window.’

Gina saw the message symbol appear.

  Dermot?

  Callum?

Probably her mom leaving something cheerful and encouraging.

Her hand hovered over the button, but finally she pressed it.

SORRY 2. CALL ME. D XX

Gina couldn’t help shrieking with excitement at this.

‘Shhhhhh!’ Niffy urged. ‘Come over here.’

The three girls peering out through the window saw a big blue car pulling smoothly into the driveway at the front of the house.

‘Action stations, action stations,’ Niffy whispered. ‘The Jaguar has landed. The Neb in festive floral frock is in the passenger’s seat.’

All three watched, faces pressed to the glass, as Mrs Knebworth leaned over towards Jaguar man and, right there in front of their very eyes, illuminated by the bright interior light, Mrs K and Jaguar man puckered up and kissed each other long and hard on the lips.

‘We’ve done this,’ Amy whispered. ‘We’ve driven her into his arms. It was our wine bottle . . .’

With a cheeky giggle, Niffy added: ‘That’s what friends are for.’
