As he briefly faced the exit at the back of the room, his eyes met hers for a second, and he nodded in recognition. A faint smile flashed across his thin lips, and then he was gone out the side, impervious to the shouts and jeers now being directed at him from all sides. People were talking loudly all around her, but Jami just sat in her seat, unable to move, biting her lip as the full extent of God’s amazing grace became clear to her.
Around Derek’s neck, over his tie, she had seen a gold chain supporting a small gold cross marked with engravings that were suspiciously familiar. She glanced over at Christopher, and her suspicions were confirmed when she saw her brother’s own neck was bare. A life in prison was a long time, but it wasn’t actually an eternity, and eternity, in the end, is the only thing that matters. God is everywhere, she reflected, even in a prison cell.
Her brother stood slowly, with one hand still resting on Holli’s shoulder, and although his face was somber, she could see somber satisfaction in his eyes as he extended his other hand to her. She took it and held it, squeezing it tight. Despite her sorrow for those who had been slain so young, and so unfairly, she suddenly found that she, too, could smile, because somewhere, in a place that was both very near and very far away, angels were singing songs of thanksgiving for a lonely soul that was lost no more.
