Chapter One
Mat Farrell didn’t expect this to go smoothly. Hopeful? Definitely. Realistic about that? Not on his life. Recouping from an injury sustained during the line of duty while on an operation for The Omega Team, he was on leave.
“Sure you don’t need backup?” Co-founder and his boss, Grey Holden asked.
If it came from anyone who’d known of his past with Sheri, he would have thought they were being funny. But coming from Grey, the man was serious when he asked.
No, he wasn’t sure. Backup may be necessary. Then again, it may not do any good if he went in armed to the teeth. The woman he was going to find may not be willing to help him at all. Hell, she may want to hurt him. “I’ll be fine. If it turns out to be more than this hunch, I’ll be in touch.”
“See you do.” Grey was gone.
Mat’s gut told him there was a smuggling ring going on here but he had to be sure, before he called in for an op. He’d been hearing reports of missing children and he had put this area in as being the overlapping radius of it all.
He shoved his phone back in his pocket and stared at the front of the small dive bar, Smitty’s. He took a deep breath and walked inside. Not much had changed in the ten years he’d been gone. Hell, he wouldn’t be surprised if some of the dust bunnies were still the same.
He strode to his target, Sheri Rysk and leaned on the bar beside her, expecting a cold response.
Nothing.
At least I’m no longer like a rutting bull around her. His hormones had calmed.
“Why do you keep looking at me?” she asked.
Her voice sounded deeper and more graveled than he recalled. “You going to pretend you don’t know me? I know it’s been a few years but that time together isn’t something you would forget. I haven’t.”
She blinked with an easy shrug and took another drink. “I’m not pretending.”
His ego felt that one. How could she have forgotten their week of incredible passion? Christ, his cock hardened as he recalled being snug within the wet heat of her pussy. “All those nights?”
She shifted toward him, spreading her legs slightly, as if just teasing him with the temptation to creep between those dusky thighs, slip beyond her panties, through her lips and enjoy the slickness.
Watching him through slitted eyes, she shook her head. “I don’t know you.”
“I do realize it’s been years, but come on now, Sheri. You honestly going to say you don’t know me?”
She cocked an eyebrow and held his gaze.
The tension between them grew. His body suddenly exploded to life, exactly how it used to when around her. Flames licked through his veins. His skin burned as everything within him needed—well, her.
She bent close with the hint of a mocking smile on her lips, offering him an unobstructed view of her plump breasts.
He spotted a new tattoo there, one he wanted to view up close and personally. He remembered her having one on the back of her shoulder, but not one on her breast.
She moved and in the next second, he felt a pressure on his groin. What it was he wasn’t sure but he was positive it wasn’t her hand. He froze, not wanting her to push it forward more and do irreparable harm.
“You seem a bit stiff, perhaps troubled. What’s wrong? I happen to remember you stiff and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” a voice spoke in his ear.
That was the voice he recalled, moaning and screaming his name, years ago. Problem was, it had come to his ears from behind, not in front.
Which meant, the woman who had something on his dick, wasn’t Sheri. I’d been so focused on seeing her again and being happy at the fact that I wasn’t acting like a rutting ass as well. Shocked that I wasn’t acting that way. Now, he knew why he didn’t feel instantly hot for the woman on the bar stool next to him. They hadn’t talked enough back then for him to know if she had a twin or not. All their conversation had been done with physical touch.
“He is under the misconception that he knows me and therefore, he touched me.” The twin clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Right now, I’m trying to decide if I should taze him in the pecker.”
Breasts pressed against his back as a lean strong arm reached around and moved the device away from his dick. He couldn’t stop his sigh of relief. That is nothing I want to go through again.
“Don’t do that, Liz,” Sheri said her breath warm against his cheek as she still stood behind him. “He has a spectacular cock.”
The woman next to him on the bar stool sighed dramatically with a shrug.
When she shifted, he noticed her eyes were not the steely gray ones he remembered but a vibrant turquoise blue.
How did I not notice that before? “Who are you?” He remained locked on the beauty next to him at the bar. “You are almost identical to Sheri.”
“I’m her cousin, Liz.” Her grin was infectious, with no apparent hold over grudge from his previous behavior. “And you’re right, we are almost identical. However, there is one difference.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I’m known as the cute one.”
At this comment, Sheri snorted and snuck between them, straddling his lap.
He bit back a groan at the press of her pussy along his cock.
“No, you’re the bitch one. Now go away.” Sheri shooed her off with one hand, not even looking back to her cousin.
Liz got off the stool and walked away with a wink.
He couldn’t help but smile as she left his sight. Relief mixed with humor being the reasons.
“What are you doing back in my neck of the woods?” Sheri asked.
Her wor
ds brought his attention back to her.
She rocked herself on his lap again, those gray eyes heated with blatant desire.
“I need you.”
“Right here or did wanna you rent a room?” she teased.
God, right here would be perfect for him and his rock-hard cock. “While that offer is tempting as hell, I mean businesswise.”
Her expression cooled and she got off his lap. “Of course, you do.”
He’d been the one to leave her and he could see she hadn’t forgotten. Right now, he had to figure out if The Omega Team had to be called in or if he was losing his marbles.
“Well?” Sheri popped some nuts into her luscious mouth and sucked the salt off her index finger in a way that had his dick pressing uncomfortably hard against his jeans.
“Could we go somewhere a bit more private?”
“I’d offer my place but not sure you’d be okay with that.” She licked any remaining salt from her plump lips. “But I would be.”
Heart thundering in his ears as he centered his gaze onto her mouth, he nodded. “That’s fine.”
Mat followed her tight ass out of Smitty’s, waiting as she shared a word with Liz. God, he owed that woman an apology for mistaking her identity and seeming to hit on her.
Liz didn’t seem to be all that upset because she toasted him on his way by.
Outside, he swore once more as Sheri swung her leg over a crotch rocket, hiking up her tight skirt to show off even more of one creamy thigh.
Yeah, I’m in big trouble. Seriously. In. Some. Big. Trouble.
Chapter Two
Sheri couldn’t drive fast enough. Well, she was capable, however it wasn’t possible, not without violating speed laws, and Jacob who owned the role of the local police chief had already given her a fair number of warnings.
Her anger simmered right below the surface. Seeing Mat in her bar, her favorite watering hole, had taken her breath away. Not in a good way. It hadn’t been because he’d been flirting with her cousin, Elizabeth. They had often been called twins. Yes, there were differences but Mat got a pass for it being darker in the bar.
He—Mat Farrell—did not get one for just walking out on her after their time together.
Now he’d returned. To toss her life into disarray. Peering over her shoulder, she spied the lights from his truck. Right there, maintaining the same distance between them.
What could have happened for him to return here? To her.
Granted, he did say he needed her. Sure, that had played to her memories of what they’d shared for that week, but there hadn’t been anything sexual in his statement. In fact, his gaze had been remarkably devoid of anything but business. Another reason she’d agreed to talk to him. His work ethic was unmatched and if he needed something from her for it, she would hear him out.
Pulling up to the small bungalow she currently rented, she did her best to ignore the steadily increasing pulse between her legs as she watched him walk toward her. Dark brown shaggy hair fell in a sexy disarray over his face.
She swung her leg off the bike and didn’t bother tugging the skirt down.
His green gaze dropped and slowly ran up her form.
Crap, I need an ice bath now, with that look he just gave me. Perhaps it would just be more productive for me to just move to the Arctic or Antarctica, so I can be around some cooler weather to offset this heat this man gives me. Everywhere he looked, he stared below her clothes. His words, from long ago still rung in her ears as fresh as they’d been the second he shared them with her.
Whenever I look at you, I see you naked. I see every inch of your sexy dusky skin.
Not memories she needed to be having right now. Where was that damn ice bath?
“Come on in,” the words fell in a tumbled rush from her lips. She opened the door.
Mat brushed by her pushing her closer to the tenuous edge. He was a damn live wire, amping her up completely, merely by being in the same vicinity as her. She turned on one light then dropped her keys in the handmade ceramic dish on the table by the door. “What’s so important tha—”
His mouth smothered hers, cutting off her words. Mat thrust his tongue deep and she was there with hers to dance. His taste poured into her. The life-giving elixir she knew she would never have enough of. He backed her to the door, hands shoving up beneath her top, calloused hands running along hypersensitive skin. Nipples at taut points, she trembled when he swiped his thumbs over them.
Soaked panties didn’t stop her from nearly humping his leg when he wedged it between her thighs. Threading her fingers through his hair, she tugged sharply as he plucked at the tips of her nipples.
He growled in response before releasing her mouth and resting his head against hers.
They were both out of breath and there was no denying the hard length of his cock pushing against her.
“I need your skills.”
“So you’ve stated.” Crap, her heart pounded nigh out of control.
“You make me forget everything but sex.” His gaze darkened with heat. “And so fucking much off it.”
“Not exactly innocent there yourself,” she retorted, for the sole reason that she couldn’t seem keep the remark from tumbling out.
“I need you to take me down the river.”
She furrowed her brow. “All this fanfare of showing back up into my life after you just walked out for nothing more than a rafting or kayaking expedition? You could have gone through regular channels. Hell, you didn’t even have to come to me as there are plenty of people who are capable of taking you over the river.”
He shook his head, his expression remaining solemn. “No. Not a group. You and me. Only.”
There was a sense of urgency in his tone that had her focus returning from where it went to just the two of them on the river. Him shirtless, water beading down his muscular chest. Wait—she was going to focus. Starting now. “What’s going on?”
“Hopefully nothing.” With a final brush of his hands over her boobs, he dropped his hands back to his sides and stepped away. “You know about those children who were taken?”
“Of course.” Her gut clenched. “I do. My cousin, Liz who you met earlier tonight, is a state trooper. Maybe she should be the one you talk to?” Missing children was out of her league.
“I’m still not sure. I’m checking hunches, doing the research. I don’t want to get people’s hopes up or throw off those who are responsible for the kidnappings because if I speak to someone and what my thoughts are on it, alerts them and they bug out.”
She pursed her lips then moved by him to her wall where she had a large map of the waters she rafted. This was her domain. The rush, the danger, all of it, she loved. “You think they’re using the rivers to move the children?”
Between her and Liz, she was known as the nice one, the calm one, the nonviolent one. However, the thought of these children being yanked from their families for god knew what shit had her ready to show how bloodthirsty she could be.
Mat turned his gaze from the map to her and gave a sharp nod. “Unfortunately, yes. This area here—” He drew a circle with his finger— “Is what overlaps of the abduction sites if you’re using a twenty-five-mile radius.”
She crossed her arms beneath her breasts and stared. “What makes you think that the law didn’t think of this? And haven’t already considered checking it out? Or actually done so?”
“I don’t know. That’s part of the reason I’m only saying this is a hunch and don’t want to tell them anything which could possibly take them from what they are focusing on.” He raked his fingers through his hair. “I can’t explain it but to me, this feels right.”
She knew what he’d done before and took his gut feeling as something important. “Okay then, let me tell you about this section. That’s an area that’s nothing less than a class three. There are a few smooth spots but other than that…Rapids. If you’re right and they are going through here often, they have someone with experience. Possibly more tha
n one. You don’t take children down anything like this without serious experience at the helm. Not without being okay with losing possibly everyone. Aside from the radius, why do you think it’s here?”
“This could take a while.”
“Let’s get to it then.” Sheri took the map and carried it to the dining room table.
Chapter Three
Mat stretched and rubbed the back of his neck. He and Sheri had been pouring over area maps for the past few hours. The table was littered with area specific maps, aerial ones, topography and more.
He got up to limber up a bit more.
Sheri had gone to get the frozen pizza from the oven.
His stomach growled as the smell of piping hot pepperoni hit him.
Cracking his neck, he ambled to the doorway of the kitchen and leaned against the support as he stared at the sexy woman in there. Pale pink pants with gray hearts had replaced the tight leather skirt. A torn and cut off green sweatshirt gaped as she bent, allowing him to see an all too brief glimpse of her breasts as she was bent over.
His need for her hadn’t waned at all. It had increased.
“Grubs on,” she said carrying it to the waiting hot pads. “The cutter is in the drawer to the right of the sink.
He grabbed it and soon, they shared the sofa while they ate. She wedged her feet beneath his thigh. He laughed as she fought—and lost—the battle with cheese.
“We should head out in the morning,” she said. “Travel around and see if we can locate their spot.”
“Agreed. I will call in if we find something.” Anything.
She ate another bite. “So, no more lone wolf behavior for you then?”
“Not really. I met a man when I got out who helped me get my head on straight.”
“Good for you.”
Is it wrong I want her as desert? “He’s a great guy. Gave me a job.”
“How nice.”
No disguising the attitude this time. He let it go. This wasn’t the time for him to remind her more of how he up and left her after their intense week together before moving on with his life. Until now. When he needed something. But this wasn’t about hurt feelings and bruised egos. It was about abducted children. “He’s part of this group, The Omega Team, but I don’t want to call them in if I’m insane with this thought.”
