Prologue
I never thought anything could come close to the feeling of throwing a game winning touchdown, but this just might top it. Teresa’s body begins to tremble as I continue the short, deliberate strokes hitting what can only be described as her magic spot. It almost feels like her insides are gripping me, creating the most amazing sensation I’ve ever experienced. Not that I have a lot of experience to use in comparison.
“Jesus, Rex…” she gasps, her entire body becoming rigid as her fingernails dig into my sides. “Oh, fuck…” I delve deeper within her in pursuit of a mutual orgasm. Something that Cosmo claims is the ultimate. Yes, I occasionally look through Teresa’s magazines while I’m waiting for her to get ready. I tighten my grip on her wrists and hold them to the bed while continuing to thrust as deeply as possible. My god, the way this feels is completely amazing. Just as her body begins to quiver uncontrollably, I feel myself losing control as well. After a few seconds of extreme bliss, I collapse onto her and we kiss each other with a fervor that is only expressed during intense moments like this. “You’re amazing,” she moans between kisses.
“You’re amazing.” I brush the hair away from her face and smile. “I couldn’t hold off any longer. That was so damn intense.” I stare into her beautiful hazel eyes and for the moment, I’m convinced that I’m the luckiest man in the world. For the last three and a half years I’ve been on a full-ride scholarship to UW, I’m the starting quarterback for the football team and I’m fucking the head cheerleader who also happens to be the hottest chick on campus. For a twenty-one-year-old, life doesn’t get much better than this. At the moment I wouldn’t switch places with anyone.
“Wake me up when you’re ready to do it again,” she says with a lust-filled snicker, before snuggling into me and closing her eyes. I’m still hard, but honestly my mind is already turning to tomorrow’s game. This is the big one, for the conference championship. Since this is my final year of eligibility, NFL scouts have been showing up for games all season and they’ll all be back for tomorrow’s game. I need to put on one hell of a show if I want to be a top draft pick. I close my eyes and try to relax, but my mind is going a million miles an hour. Just relax and breathe. It’s only your entire future on the line.

Three quarters and fourteen minutes in, the game is on the line. We need three points to tie, as it’s been a defensive battle with neither team having any success in the red zone. Once again, we’re faced with third and long needing eight yards for a first down and nine for a touchdown. There are times when eight yards seems like a mile and against this defense, now is one of those moments. We need to shake things up. I signal the offensive coordinator that I want a shot at taking it in. He lowers his head, staring at me over his sunglasses for what seems like ten seconds. He calls a time out.
The strain on his face becomes evident as we huddle around him on the sideline. “Are you sure you want to do this?” he asks, knowing full well it’s a risky play. “These guys will take you out if we give them a chance.”
“I know, but that’s why they won’t be expecting it,” I reply, glancing up at two of the NFL scouts who are seated just behind us. I hav
en’t been able to show them what I’m capable of so far. It’s now or never. “I’m willing to take the chance.”
“Alright, if you’re sure,” he concedes reluctantly. “Bennett and Taylor, you guys will have to hit hard to create a gap that we’ll send Richardson through. Then Rex will fake the handoff before slipping around the end and going for the corner.” He pauses looking directly at me. “You’re right. They won’t be expecting it.”
A surge of adrenaline courses through my veins as we break the huddle and head back to the line of scrimmage. I take a deep breath before beginning the cadence that has the potential to land me a first round draft pick. I keep my head cocked to the right, wanting to give the impression that I’m looking for weakness on that side. “Hut, hut…” The ball is snapped firmly into my hands. I turn hitting Richardson in the gut, before he blasts into the designated hole. I spin to my left and have a clear shot at the corner marker. It’s going to work! I cut around Taylor and stretch out my left arm with the ball in hand, easing it past the marker. I’m in!
All I see is a yellow flash before everything goes black. Wow, this isn’t good, I think to myself as sounds slowly begin to flood back into my consciousness. I must’ve gotten knocked out. “Holy shit, you okay man?” I hear Charles Bennett’s voice above me. I try to push myself up, so he grabs me under the shoulder pad to help me up. I immediately flop back to the ground. I’ve never felt so weak in my life. It’s almost like I can’t move.
“Back off! Don’t touch him!” The head athletic trainer yells, racing toward me from the sideline. “We’re going to need a stretcher!” he yells before crouching down beside me. “Don’t’ try to move,” he reiterates, placing his hand beneath my head to steady it. “I think you’ve injured your neck.”
That would explain all the stars I’m seeing. I want to shake the cobwebs out, but something is definitely not right with my neck. I’ve taken some hits that knocked out of place a couple times, but this is different. The darkness turns to light as the trainers slowly turn me onto my back. I crack my eyelids, looking into the bright lights above me. The head trainer slips a neck brace on and is frantically taping my helmet to the stretcher. The crowd of seventy thousand begins to clap as they lift me from the field. The fact that a crowd that size has remained nearly silent for the last several minutes tells me that things aren’t good. I feel a sharp pain in my neck as they load me into an ambulance that has backed out onto the field. I know exactly what the whole scene looks like and a sharp pain spreads to my gut. This isn’t good at all. I strain to glance over at several of my teammates who have gathered to watch my departure. They all look incredibly sullen, reinforcing the gravity of my predicament. The only exception is our middle linebacker, Kip Taylor; who’s cocky smirk is the last thing I see as they load me inside. The look on his face will remain lodged in my memory forever.
Chapter 1
Rex
After nearly twenty-four hours of scans, consultations and debate over surgical approaches, Teresa is a welcome distraction as she enters my room. After a brief moment of chit chat, Mom excuses herself to give us a little privacy. “You like my halo?” I ask, glancing up at the metal frame encompassing my head.
“It’s crazy to see you like this,” she replies with a sad expression. “Is it true what they’re saying?”
“I guess I don’t know what anyone’s saying.” I can only imagine. “Other than my parents, the only other people I’ve talked to are doctors and nurses. Are they saying I’m finished?”
“Yeah. Everyone thinks your odds of being drafted are pretty much nil,” she says, reaching for my hand.
“My father is flying in a former colleague from West Virginia. He says he’s one of three surgeons that he would allow to perform my surgery,” I tell her, still feeling optimistic that this guy can work a miracle. “He’s going to rebuild my C5 vertebra from a bone in my hip. Everyone’s telling me how lucky I am to be moving at all. Most injuries like this either severely damage or even sever the spinal cord.”
“Yeah, Charles felt horrible for trying to help you up.” A familiar pout crosses her lips. “Everyone just thought you had gotten your bell rung.”
“It was really strange. Everything just went black. Now, looking back I remember seeing the yellow helmet and hearing a crunch in my neck, but at the time I was totally focused on whether or not I got the touchdown,” I admit, which seems completely irrelevant in hindsight.
“You made the touchdown, but everyone knows that without you it’s the end of the winning streak.” She continues to rub my arm with a somber expression. “It’s actually shattered huh? That’s what people have been fearing, but everyone has been closed off.”
“I know. It’s hospital policy when there’s so much at stake,” I explain. “They want to avoid speculation, so please don’t say anything to anyone,” I request picking up a strange vibe from her.
“Kip and Charles both texted me this morning to find out what I knew. I told them I was coming to see you,” she confides. “Am I just supposed to just ignore them?”
“No. Just tell them we won’t know anything until after surgery.” I take hold of her hand and turn my eyes to focus on hers. “Are you okay?”
“Of course,” she shifts her eyes off to the side. “I’m just scared that this will change everything.”
“It might end up changing my career path, but it doesn’t have to change everything,” I counter. “I’m going to come out of this.”
“I know, but nothing will be the same. We had plan a and plan b, depending on who drafted you.” Her eyes continue to dart around the room, avoiding mine. “We never talked about plan c.”
“We’re great together,” I remind her, thinking back to Friday night. “I’ve never connected with anyone the way I do with you. It shouldn’t matter where we live or what we do for a living.”
“No, it probably shouldn’t, but…” She cuts her sentence short and her eyes come back to mine. “I really do care about you and I’m glad you’ll be okay. It broke my heart to see you lying on the field like that.”
“Dr. Stephens just landed,” my father says, sticking his head in the room. “I’m going to the airport pick him up and they’ll have you prepped for surgery by the time we get back. He needs to be back in Morgantown tonight, so there’s no time to waste.” He looks over at Teresa and gives her a nod. “You’ll be able to see him again in the morning. He’s in most qualified hands possible. This guy is the best of the best.”
“Okay. Goodbye Rex. I hope everything goes great for you,” she says in a way that sounds as if she’s leaving for good.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, right?” I tug at her hand, wanting her to lean in and give me a kiss.
She lifts my hand to her lips and kisses me on the knuckles instead. “I’ll see you later.” The expression on her face says it all. Even though we’ve only been serious for a few months, I’ve known her long enough to realize that she’s distancing herself from me. It was something I was glad to see when I was trying to pry her away from her old boyfriend, but now I’m seeing it from the other side.
“I’ll be fine,” I tell her, knowing that Dad’s right and I’ll have the best possible care. Maybe I’m just imagining all of this. My thoughts haven’t been too clear because of all the painkillers. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Two nurses enter the room, one unlocking the wheels of my bed while the other grabs hold of the stand holding the monitors.
“Bye Rex,” she says as they push my bed past her and head down the corridor toward surgery. She’ll be back tomorrow, I tell myself. I’m just feeling a little vulnerable at the moment. Teresa is a better person than that and we have something special together.

Chapter 2
Six Months Later
After months of halos, neck braces and intensive therapy, I find myself sitting in front of Cindy, a psychologist friend of Mom’s. Recanting the story to her might be therapeutic, but right now it’s still incredibly pa
inful. I’ve managed to complete almost all of my graduation requirements, but I’ve been avoiding everyone who reminds me of the past.
“So, when did you guys break up?” she asks, referring to Teresa. “It wasn’t right away I hope.”
“No. She came back the next morning to see how my surgery had gone and we spent a lot of time together the next couple weeks,” I reply, clearing my throat, not enjoying bringing these memories back to the surface. Cindy looks down at her clipboard, giving me some time. “She couldn’t understand why I didn’t want to go to the next game. I would’ve had to endure a two-hour flight each way and I was still in a halo.”
“She wanted you to remain part of the team?” she asks, with a puzzled expression.
“I don’t know. She kept talking about the fact that the surgeon had mentioned that there was still a chance I could play sports one day.” A wave of anxiety washes through me. “I mean, maybe if I had another year of college eligibility. Then I maybe could’ve played again. But there’s not an NFL team out there who’s going to waste a draft pick on a quarterback with a broken neck.” I hang my head to the side in an attempt to relieve some of the tension building in my neck.
“Are you okay?” she asks, seeing my discomfort.
“She also insisted on having sex,” I add, wanting to get everything out. “I’m in a fucking halo and she’s expecting me to perform like there’s nothing wrong. I couldn’t even get close enough to kiss her. That’s when I kinda lost it.”
“I imagine it was all a bit too frustrating?”
“Yeah, she was acting like this was just a temporary thing. Life was going to go back to the way it used to be, but I knew that would never happen. I wasn’t going to be drafted, my football career was over and I was trying to come to terms with it. Having a delusional girlfriend telling me that everything is going to work out wasn’t helping anything.” I feel a weight lift from my chest. I’ve been needing to admit that I was the one who ultimately pushed her away. “I knew that my prospects for being an NFL quarterback was the reason I had won her over in the first place. She talked about it constantly. How she hoped that I would be drafted by the Jaguars, because her best friend had moved to Palm Coast which was only an hour away.”
